Extract from Newspaper Cutting: (Possibly the "Times" or "Daily Telegraph" ) Printed the day after he died, 10th January 1936..

His career resembles that of many other Regular officer who, after seeing plenty of active service in Africa and India while of comparatively junior rank, thereafter found little prospect for advancement until War provided the opportunity of filling higher appointments with distinction.

He was born on May 2nd 1861, the son of Mr C.M.T. Western, his mother being a daughter of Captain W. Balfour, R.N. of Trenabie Orkney. Educated at Victoria College, Jersey he was gazetted from Sandhurst in August 1879, to 50th Foot 1st Bat. Queen's Own (Royal West Kent Regiment). In 1884 he went on active service with his unit which, included in the Nile Expedition intended for the relief of Gordon in Khartoum, ascended the river in whalers. His promotion to Captain came in March 1885.

Captain Western competed for and entered the Staff College and after graduating, was appointed in February 1893, an instructor at Sandhurst for 18 months. He obtained his majority in 1894. Service in India included experience of fighting on the North West Frontier, for the 1st Royal West Kent took part in the operations in the Bajaur and Mahmund country in 1897, when Major Western was slightly wounded and earned a mention in despatches. Then followed, in 1898, the expedition against the Bunerwals, when the battalion participated in the capture of the Tanga Pass.

When the 2nd battalion of the Regiment landed in South Africa in 1900. Major Western was with it, and after a few months of active service in the Orange Free State he succeeded to the command. But in April, 1901 he was given a mobile column, which he led successfully until the end of hostilities, participating in the "drives" which gradually rounded up or broke the resistance of the burghers. His column operated at different times in the Orange Free State, the Transvaal, and Cape Colony. Having already received two "mentions" and the brevet of Lieutenant-Colonel, he was created a C.B. in 1902.

He then returned to the command of his battalion, his regimental promotion to Lieutenant-Colonel dating from 1901 and his brevet colonelcy from 1904. In August 1905, when his period of command wad over, he spent a considerable time on half-pay, and it was not until June 1908, that he was appointed G.S.O.I. 3rd Division, in the Southern Command. This post, however, he held for only two years, but was re-employed in February 1911 when he went to Exeter to command No.8 District.

Here he continued up to July, 1915, when he was sent out to Sir Ian Hamilton's Mediterranean Expeditionary Force as a special service officer for duty on the lines of communication. He was almost at once appointed Base Commandant at Helles, on the Gallipoli peninsula and he went ashore at Suvla in the early hours of August 7 1915, to act as Principal Military Landing Officer at the beaches there. He was transferred to Helles again on August 26, when the active operations at Suvla were over, and in October he became Base Commandant at Mudros with the temporary rank of Brigadier-General.

General Western remained at Mudros until after the evacuation of the Gallipoli peninsula. His next appointment was a home one; that of Major-General in Charge of Administration, Southern Command, which he took up in October 1916. He had been promoted Major-General at the beginning of the year. In December 1917, he went to Italy as Deputy Adjutant-General to the British Forces, and thence in April 1918 he was moved to Egypt, to succeed Sir John Adye in a similar capacity with Allenby's army. Here he continued until after the end of the War and up to his retirement from the service in May 1920. He was created a K.C.M.G. in 1919.
