James Norman, a son of John and Lydia (Brown) Norman, was born in Duffield, Derby, Engla nd in 1776 and was christened at Derby parish May 19, 1776. At this writing, it is not know n when or how James came to America. We do know that he married Mary Nedley, who was born i n 1775 in Virginia. In 1810, the Randolph County VA (WV) Census listed the 12 member famil y of James Norman as follows:

James Norman reported a family of eleven in the 1820 Census of Randolph County. The la dy over 45 was missing. (We assume she was the mother of either James or Mary).

"During the Summer of 1843, one Sunday at prayer meeting, which was being conducted a t the residence of Wm. Boggs, James Norman, a man of devout mind and very reserved and timid , a gray haired pilgrim whose sands of time were nearly run, in the course of the services arose and for the first time he was ever known to speak in public gave such a profound and co nvincing exhortation that all who were present were soul feelingly stirred and sensibly impre ssed. "I myself being so forcibly imbued and touched by Father Norman's appeal that not lon g after I joined the Church and was baptized in Steer Creek just below the forks of Steer Cre ek at Stumptown by the Rev. Carr Bailey who was pastor of Mt. Pisgah Church from 1842 to 184 4 and was received into full fellowship and continued a member of the Mt. Pisgah Baptist Chur ch at Stumptown, Gilmer County, then Virginia, now WV, over fourteen years."

I JAMES NORMAN of the County of Gilmer and State of Virginia, farmer, do make and publi sh this my last will and testament and I direct that my body be decently interred according t o the rites and ceremonies of the regular Baptist Church, and that my funeral be conducted in a manner corresponding with my estate and station in life, and as to such world ly estate as it hath pleased God to entrust me with, I dispose of the same as follows: First , I direct that all my debts and funeral expenses be paid as soon after my decease as possibl e out of the first moneys that shall come in to the hands of my Executors from any portion o f my estate. Also I direct that a fair valuation or appraisement be made by three judiciou s neighbors, of all my said estate including my household furniture, and after being signed w ith their names, that a copy of the same be given to each of my Executors. Also I direct tha t all my farming utensils and personal property be sold by public auction by my Executors o n a reasonable credit taking bond and security from the purchasers in order to secure the pay ment thereof.
In order to effectuate this my intentions I hereby rest in my Executors full power and au thority to collect all my debts due me and the amount of my personal estate and secure the sa me to be by them applied to the maintenance of my loving wife if she shall be living at the t ime of my decease. I also in like manner direct that the whole of my household furniture shal l be and remain the absolute property of my beloved wife. If she shall not survive me, the n that the same be sold with the balance of my personal property to be equally divided amongs t my heirs share and share alike, so soon as the same shall come into the hands of my Executo rs.
I also direct that if any amount of my estate shall remain in the hands of my Executors a fter the decease of my beloved wife that the same be equally divided as I have before describ ed. I do hereby make and ordain my esteemed son Semore Norman and James E. Norman Executors o f this my last will and testament.
In witness whereof I James Norman the testator, to this will written on one sheet of pap er, set my hand and seal this tenth day of June one thousand eight hundred and fifty two.

Gilmer County Court, July Term 1852
l. The Last will and testament of James Norman deceased was proven by the oath of Dani el D. Bush and A. J. Norman, two of the witnesses hereto, and is ordered to be recorded. Jam es E. Norman, an executor named therein refused to qualify as executor, therefore on the moti on of Seamor Norman, one of the Executors named in said will who took the oath of an executor , and together with Levi Johnson and Samuel L. Hays his sureity, entered into and acknowledge d a bond in the penalty of $800 dollars, conditioned as the law directs. Certificate is grant ed him for obtaining probate of the said will in due form. John Norman, a son of James and Mary (Nedley) Norman, was born in 1798. On October 24 , 1816, John Norman, a shoemaker by trade, married Nancy Montgomery in Randolph County VA (WV ). Nancy died about 1840 and John married Orinda Holbert, February 1, 1842, in Lewis Count y VA (WV). By 1860 John Norman had moved to Lewis County VA (WV), where on June 11, 1860, nea r Weston, census taker Alfred H. Jackson recorded John's family.
Little else is known of John Norman. His wife, Orinda owned land on Polk Creek, Lewis C ounty VA (WV) near Weston. A John Norman is buried beside James Norman in the Meadows Cemeter y, near Normantown WV. It may be he.

James Nedley Norman, a son of James and Mary (Nedley) Norman, was born 1801 in Virginia . He married Catherine Summers May 15, 1822, in Randolph County VA (WV). He was elected firs t High Sheriff of Calhoun County VA (WV) in 1856, and he then appointed two of his sons, Alph eus and Philip, as his deputies.
