General Notes (Husband)
PICKENS, Andrew, governor of South Carolina, was born in W axhaw district, S.C., Nov. 13, 1779; son of General Andre w (q.v.) and Rebecca (Calhoun) Pickens. He was a student a t the College of New Jersey, Princeton; was appointed lieut enant-colonel in the U.S. army, and served in the war of 18 12 on the Canada frontier, fighting at the battle of Lundy' s Lane, July 24, 1814, and commanding a regiment of state t roops in the south in 1815. He was a presidential elector f rom the third district of South Carolina in 1813, and gover nor of South Carolina, 1816-18. In 1820 he received a commi ssion from congress with full power and authority to hold c onferences and make treaties with the Creek tribe of Indian s in the state of Georgia. Subsequently he removed to Alaba ma, where he engaged in cotton planting, and was appointe d president of the state bank by the legislature. He marrie d Susan Smith (1788-1810) of St. Paul's parish, daughter o f Francis and Susan Wilkinson, and descendant of Landgrav e Joseph Morton, colonial governor of South Carolina, 1682- 85, who married Elizabeth Blake, niece of Admiral Robert Bl ake, England (1598-1657). Of their two children, Francis Wi lkinson and Susan, the latter married James Calhoun, nephe w of John C. Calhoun. Andrew Pickens died, while on busines s in Mississippi, June 24, 1838.
