General Notes (Husband)
Company D, 87th Indiana Volunteer Infantry
[bobspu.ged]
BIO: Discovery of two letters written by John B. WRIGHT during his time of military service in the Union Army, led to documentation that he was the father of John M. WRIGHT, first husband of Maine Augusta MOW. These letters, one to his sister-in-law, Almira, the other to his brother, James, were found in a collection of memorabilia owned by Alice P. (WRIGHT) and in the possession of her daughter, Harriet Eileen MEUNINCK. In these letters, WRIGHT gave details of his rank, his company and their location at the time the letters were written; this enabled the compiler to obtain the veteran's pension files from the National Archives. John B. WRIGHT enlisted 26 JUL 1862 at Rochester, IN. He was assigned to Company D, 87th Indiana Volunteer Infantry. A letter to his sister-in-law in DEC 1862 was written in Gallatin, TN. Military documents indicate that WRIGHT was hospitalized at this time for "illness" of an unspecified nature. In SEP 1863, WRIGHT received a gunshot wound in his right knee during the Battle of Chickamauga in GA. Following this injury, he was hospitalized first in Clarks- ville, TN; then in Louisville, KY; then Madison, IN. Reports indicate that he was transferred to Carver Hospital in "Washington City"(D.C.) because the wound failed to heal. While at Carver Hospital, he was "attacked" by pmeumonia and was in treatment there until his discharge in July 1865. Military papers described the soldier at the time of his enlist- ment as "6 feet tall with sandy complexion, hazel eyes, sandy colored hair". He would have been 20 years old at that time. His occupation was listed as "farmer". Evidently, he was not married when he en- listed. WRIGHT addressed his letters to his sister-in-law, Almira WRIGHT, and James WRIGHT. Reference was made in both letters to "William". An assumption could be made that this was another brother. On application for military pension, WRIGHT gives the name of his wife and the date of their marriage. He also states that wife, Elizabeth, is deceased (as of 02 JAN 1915, the date of application). He names five children and gives their dates of birth, including John M. WRIGHT, his second child who married Maine A. MOW. Although John B. WRIGHT addresses Almira as "Dear sister" in his letter of DEC 1862, 1870 Census Records from Fulton Co., IN list James WRIGHT, age 38, and his wife "Elmira", also 38, as living in the household enumerated immediately after John B. and Elizabeth WRIGHT. Consecutive numbers in Census Records usually indicate next- door neighbors. At the INDIANA State Library in Indianapolis, compiler found "Jon B. WRIGHT" listed in a death index for Fulton County. Per that entry, John died 31 AUG 1917 in Richland Township; he was 75 years of age; his death was recorded in Book C-19, p 18.

General Notes for Child John M. Wright
[bobspu.ged]
BIO: Little is known about this John WRIGHT except what has been found in his father's C.W. Pension File and in the limited information from family tradition. John B. WRIGHT reported in pension applications that his son was born 04 FEB 1872 in Fulton Co., IN. In 1900, John M. WRIGHT married Maine Augusta MOW in Fulton Co. This couple apparently resided in St. Joseph Co. for the brief duration of their marriage since they were not found in the 1900 census nor in property records of Fulton Co. There is no record of their divorce in Fulton Co., IN records. On 22 OCT 1901, Maine gave birth to the couple's only known child, Alice Pauline WRIGHT, in South Bend (St Joseph) IN. By May of 1910, Maine had been married to Theodore STICHLER for three years. Richland Twp., Fulton Co., census shows "Alice WRIGHT, stepdaughter" as 7 years of age. The marriage of John M. WRIGHT and Maine MOW evidently ended in divorce in St. Joseph Co. before 1907, but the MOW family avoided discussion of " Mr. WRIGHT". The only information given to this compiler by her father, Virgil GILCHRIST, was that there had been a divorce and, "the family never talked about it".
