Easter Phillips had a cousin named W.C. Ault who lived near Liberty,Txand knew of the Cherokee History. This information was from aletterto Rosa Dew Newberry Date 9/27/1916.
He said that each family had a tribal word and you used to havetorepeat that word to obtain rights to Indian Lands. Our familieswordwas "By the Hollies" (or possibly "by the Follies" or "By theHolys"the reading of that letter was not clear.
Ester/Easter Phillips' mother and father were Mildred Talley andLeviPhillips. They were connected by family to the Cherokees by thnamesof Ross and Watts.
Mildred Talley's mother's name was Leatha Ross and she was aCherokeeIndian. Levi Phillips was Reuben Phillip's son and wasmarried to aCherokee woman whose maiden name was nelson. Part of thePhillipsfamily was born in Overton County, TN.
Stephen and Ester Phillips Newberry moved to Arkansas around 1842asshown by the 1850 Census of Newton County, Arkansas. Thierfirstchild was born in Tennesssee about 1840.
After Stephen C. Newberry Jr. died, his wife Ester Phillipsremarried.She married the Rev. Sterling Pittman. The Rev. SterlingPittman'sdaughter, also named Ester had married William JasperNewberry.
In other words, Ester Phillips Newberry Pittman was themother-in-lawand the step mother of Ester Pittman Newberry (the wifeof her son -William Jasper Newberry.

March 23, 1995 (Told by Stephen Spaulding, grandson of WilliamJasperNewberry). My grandfather Jasper lived with us when I was asmallchild. He received a pension check each mnth for his service intheConfederate Army during the Civil War. He died at the age of83years.
Military records show that he was with the 7th Calvary, Company Kinthe CSA
He served under General Cabell and was awarded the commission ofSecondLieutenant for bravery and leadership after having served in 7majorbattles. General Cabell served under the leadership of SterlingPrice.
Amy Gloria Lovvo, great-granddaughter has a copy of thepensionsrecords of William Jasper. These copies were obtained fromthe TexasState Archives. They show that he enlised in Co. G. of theInft. G.Peels Regiment, Inft. Arkansas Volunteers and then in theCalvary, -Company K.
