General Notes (Husband)

[18401.ged]

The following entries are from Cutler's "History of Kansas", section on Allen County, Kansas:

"The second term of the United States District Court was held at the same place (Cofachique) in October, 1858, Judge Williams presiding; J.B.Lambkin was Clerk, and J.E.Morris, Sheriff. Bashaw; Thomas Dean; J.B.Young; Jacob Buzzard; Moses Neal; Michael Kiser; Robert Culbertson; Simon Camerer; A.G.Carpenter; J.C.Redfield; William Pace; Charles Barton; D.Reese; and Rufus Wood. there were a number of civil cases before the court, and indictments were found agains Leonard Fuqua, for assault and battery with intent to kill Josiah C. Redfield and assault of P.P.Philips, and several others on the same charge. These were nearly all the result of disputes over land claims, and further than indictments the cases were not prosecuted" (Allen County History, Part 2)

"On the fourth Monday in March, 1860, a special election was held, and resulted in the election of J.G.Rikard, Probate Judge; J.C.Redfield, Sheriff. At the same election Humboldt (Kansas) was made the county seat." (Allen County History, Part 3)

"The first regular election after Kansas became a state took place in November, 1861. Following is the result of the vote in Allen County: D.M. Valentine was elected Representative; J.E.Childs, Probate Judge; J.C.Redfield, Sheriff." (Allen County History, Part 3)

Humboldt (KS) was organized as a village on April 6, 1866. In the spring o 1870, Humboldt was organized as a city of the third class. W.W.Curdy was elected Mayor; T.L.Byrne, Clerk; and J.C.Redfield, Treasurer." (Allen County History, Part 4.)

The 1860 census shows Josiah and his wife, Hannah, living in Geneva, KS. His occupation is listed as "Farmer". He lists personal assets in that census wit a value of $375.00.

The 1880 census shows Josiah and His wife, Hannah, living on Emporia Street, Wichita, Kansas (roll 1254396). He is listed as a "Dry Goods Merchant" with his wife and four children. The 1900 census shows them at 349 N. Emporia Street, and that they had six children, five of whom were living (1900) By an amazing find, Josiah was the census taker for his district for the 1900 census.

From William G. Cutler's "History of the State of Kansas"; Sedgwick County, Pt. 12:

" J.C.REDFIELD, commission merchant, was born in Summit County, Ohio, in 1832 son of S. G. Redfield and Esther (Clark) Redfield. Married, in 1859, Miss Hannah A. Nichols. They have five children - Flora G., Frank, Kate, Belle, and Pearl. He came to Kansas in 1857; located at Geneva, Allen County, remained till 1861; removed to Humboldt. From 1860 to 1865, was Sheriff of Allen County " In 1869 and 1870 he was a member of the Kansas Legislature. Was appointed Receiver of the United States Land Office in 1865, at Humboldt; held that appointment for three years. In 1870 he was appointed Receiver of the United States land office at Wichita; located at Wichita at that time; held that appointment for four years. In 1875 he engaged in merchandising; continued until 1881, then commenced a general commission business; located on Maine street near First. Is a member of the Masonic Fraternity, Wichita Lodge, No. 99, A., F & A. M., and also of Wichita Chapter No. 43."

The following obituary appeared in the Humboldt "Union" on April 29, 1904: "A Wichita dispatch tells of the death of J. C. Redfield at Cincinnati Wednesday, wither he had gone on a visit. J.C. Redfield came to Allen County i 1859 from Ohio and in 1860 was made sheriff, serving five years. In 1870 and 1871 he was Representative from this county. He and John Francis and T. S. Stover were the first class taken into the Humboldt Masonic lodge. Mr. Redfiel moved from Humboldt to Wichita where he took charge of the Land Office. Recently he resigned as County Commissioner of Sedgwick county to go to his old home in Ohio for a visit. Deceased was a brother of R. R. Redfield, of Humboldt."

A much more extensive obituary from the Wichita Daily Eagle is in the files Josiah Clark Redfield is buried in Hillside Cemetery, Wichita, Kansas. Records there indicate his cause of death as congestive heart failure.

Photograph and biographical sketch was presented to the Allen County Sheriff's Department on May 6, 1998, by the great-grandson of Josiah Clark Redfield.....me.[Downing.ged]

All historical and vital records found on Josiah Clark Redfield indicate the name as "J.C.Redfield"; even his grave marker. Apparently Josiah always went b his initials. The following entries are from Cutler's "History of Kansas", section on Allen County, Kansas: (Also, see notes under his wife, Hannah A. Nichols). Records there indicate his cause of death as heart failure. Photograph and biographical sketch was presented to the Allen County Sheriff's Department on May 6, 1998, and similar documents forwarded to the Kansas State Library on September 29, 1998 to complete information on their listing of Kansas State Legislators (J.C. served in the state House of Representatives in 1870-71). The listing of all state legislators is available on the web site for the Kansas State Library. J.C. Redfield is also listed as a Kansas Pioneer on the University of Kansas web site. The 1891 Wichita City Directory lists him as "Justice of the Peace". On March 1, 1999, a copy of the book, "A History of the Humboldt, Kansas Community, 1855-1988" was obtained from the Humboldt Historical Society. Extensive biographical data on J.C. Redfield is in the book, as well as a photograph showing his Hardware store in 1870, and another showing a "Redfield Hardware" invoice. On June 8, 1999, I discovered that the death certificate of J.C. was on file with the Midwest Historical and Genealogical Society, Wichita. Certificate #21 for 1904; copy was obtained and is in the files.

General Notes (Wife)

[18401.ged]

Birth year and marriage date based on the 1900 census info for Wichita, Kansas The following paragraph is in error, as Josiah and Hannah had six children as determined in the 1900 census, Wichita, Kansas, but I include it here as a recollection of Dorothy Dana Downing (Egnell):

"There was one other child of this marriage. She was known only as "Aunt Flo", who married"Uncle Al" (last name unknown). They had a daughter, Carrie, who was married to Lou Beech; they, in turn, had a son, Ashley, and two daughters, Elsie and Arvilla. They lived in Maywood, Illinois, around 1926."

Josiah and Hannah and their four children appear in the 1880 census for Wichita, Sedgwick County, Kansas. Roll 1254396, district 215, Page 38. According to that record, Hannah's father was born in CT, and her mother was born in Massachusetts. They also appear in the 1900 census, same area. In that census, it showed that she had six children, five of which were living.

An undated obituary from a Humboldt, KS, newspaper states the following: DEATH OF MRS. REDFIELD Former Allen County Resident dead in Ohio The death of Mrs. J.C.Redfield, an old Allen County settler, who formerly resided in Humboldt, occurred last week at Franklin, Ohio, and the funeral services are to be held this afternoon at Wichita, Kansas. O.S.Redfield, of Humboldt, passed through this morning on his way to Wichita to attend the funeral services of his sister-in-law. Mrs. Redfield has been in the east for many years. She leaves a number of children.

The article was subsequently dated by Beverly Miller, of the Allen County Historical Society. Hannah died of "Senile Dementia" according to cemetery records.

On May 5, 1998, I visited the grave site of Hannah and J.C. at Highland Cemetery, Wichita, Kansas. The marker can be seen in the media file. It is most attractive and in a pleasant location under a cherry tree.

After over a year of searching, I finally located the date of the marriage of J.C.Redfield and Hannah A. Nichols (13 Oct 1859, Twinsburg, OH). It was found on the "Kansas Marriage Index, 1854-1873", Kansas Historical Quarterly, Vol. 21 Summer, 1955.[Downing.ged]

"REDFIELD, J.C., of Geneva, Allen county, and Hannah A. NICHOLS, of Twinsburg, Ohio, mar. Oct 13, 1859, at Twinsburg, by the Rev. Mr. Monks, (Lawrence Republican, Oct. 27)" From this information, it is clear that J.C. went to Kansas, and after his initial establishment in Geneva, returned to Ohio and married Hannah, then took her to Kansas. My mother, Elise Sendelbeck, states she remembers Pearl Redfield, my grandmother and J.C. and Hannah's youngest child, telling her that J.C. and Hannah went to Kansas by covered wagon. This would likely be true, as railroads did not appear in Kansas until well after the Civil War. On June 8, 1999, I discovered that Hannah's death certificate was on file wit the Midwest Historical and Genealogical society, Wichita. Certificate #377 for 1907; copy was obtained and is in files. An oral history was recited by Hannah's nephew, James H. Andrews, shortly before his death in 1935 about the early history of Humboldt, Kansas. In it, h mentions that Humboldt had a theatrical group in the 1860's, and among the actors were "Mr. and Mrs. J.C.Redfield".

General Notes for Child Flora G. Redfield

[18401.ged]

Flora appears in the 1880 census report for Wichita,Sedgwick County, KS, as being married (name on census is Flora G. Woods), and with daughter Carrie. Sh was living with her parents on that day (June 11, 1880). Her husband is not shown as in the household.

From the recollections of Dorothy Dana Downing (Egnell): "A child of this marriage was known to me only as "Aunt Flo", who married "Uncle Al" (last name unknown)**. They had a daughter, Carrie, who was marrie to Lou Beech; they, in turn, had a son, Ashley, and two daughters, Elsie and Arvilla. They lived in Maywood, Illinois, around 1926."

1910 Census report for Wichita, Kansas, shows last name as WOOD.

According to the 1900 census, occupation is given as Bookkeeper. His father's 1904 obituary gives his address as 432 North Topeka Avenue. (1910 and 1920 census need to be checked). The 1891 Wichita City Directory lists him as a bookkeeper for a Drug store. Frank's Death certificate was obtained November 1, 1999. He died in St. Franci Hospital, Wichita, Kansas. His address in 1940 was 908 Gilman, Wichita. He apparently died of prostate cancer. Informant for the death certificate information was his son, (Benjamin) Boyce Redfield, who had an address of 5109 Kings Row, Wichita. Boyce was a realtor.

General Notes for Child Belle Redfield

[18401.ged]

Belle appears in the 1880 Census of Wichita, Sedgwick County, Kansas, with her parents and siblings. The age column is badly smudged and cannot be read. Sh is checked off in the columns for "cannot read or write", indicating she was probably pre-school age in 1880.

From Marriages Recorded in Sedgwick County, KS: "Belle Redfield was married to C.B.Harris by the same minister and on the same day as her sister, Pearl Redfield was married to George D. Downing. Their marriage is recorded on the same page as that of Pearl and George."

Her father's obituary (1904) notes her as "Mrs. Harris of Texas". The social security death index shows a Belle Harris, born 5 Nov 1875, of Beaumont, Jefferson co., TX, ss no. 461-86-8188, date of death 15 Mar 1969. Unconfirmed if this is the same Belle Harris; to be worked on. RD, 8/2/98

General Notes for Child Pearl Redfield

[18401.ged]

Full name: Claude Pearl Redfield, according to Dorothy Dana (Egnell) Downing. Gravesite in Bronswood Cemetery, 3805 Madison St., Oak Brook, IL 60521 Section F Lot 83

Letter from Bronswood dated Sep 11, 1997, indicates a date of death of Oct 7 1966; but this may have been the burial date since she died in Indianapolis.

Housewife. Name appears only as "Pearl" in the 1880 census. Pearl Redfield was injured by a horse as a child, experienced total deafness since injury. She used an early electronic hearing aid, but communicated primarily by lip reading, at which she excelled. Her early hearing aid (which really didn't help much) used two huge batteries, total in size of about four of today's "D" batteries, which she wore on her thigh.

Pearl Redfield Downing spent much of her time in our home when I was a child. She was dearly loved by me, and my card-playing companion for many years at those times. She smoked cigarettes, drank beer, and still lived to a ripe old age. She also had a lot of class. (She aways used the name, "Pearl Redfield Downing", apparently very proud of her Redfield maiden name. After searching the Redfield ancestry, one easily sees why.)

Source: personal memories. Raymond A. Downing Notes obtained from Dorothy Dana Egnell, 1997: "I remember Mom telling me her parents travelled to Kansas in a covered wagon. They lived in a log cabin, and her mother, Hannah, was badly frightene one day when she saw an Indian looking at her through a window. He left without incident."

Despite the insistence of aunt Dana claiming Pearl Redfield's first name to be "Claude", I have found no verification of this. The census records, marriag license, and grave marker only shows "Pearl".

General Notes for Child Carrie Effie Redfield

[Downing.ged]

It was noted on the 1900 census that Josiah C. and Hannah Redfield indicated they had six children, five of whom were living. On 12-4-98 while reviewing th Redfield entries for the 1870 census, I located Carrie E. Redfield, eight years of age. She does not appear in the 1880 census, indicating a death year of between 1870 and 1880. She is obviously the sixth child; the one who did not survive. Carrie's sister, Flora (Wood) Redfield, named her first daughter after her deceased sister. On my May, 1999, visit to Highland cemetery, I found Carrie's grave adjacent to her parents. The marker is badly weathered. At the foot in raised letters i the word "Carrie". On the side of the base closest to the cherry tree is inscribed "Redfield". There was a legend on the east face of the monument, but only the words, "Our Loved One" can be made out. On the north face are remnants of an inscription, possibly her birth and death dates. The marker has not survived these 120 years very well. It is badly covered with lichen and moss, and the growth of the cherry tree has pushed the monument off plumb to th east. A check of the Highland cemetery database revealed the following: "Carrie E. Redfield, died 25 Feb 1877, age 14y 6m 24d, daughter of JC and HH Redfield". A query was sent to the Wichita Genealogical Society in May, 1999, to find an obituary in the Wichita Eagle. Both the Eagle and the Wichita Weekl Beacon had short obituary notices without a cause of death indicated. It is the writer's belief that Carrie died of illness, not accident, or that would have been noted A child in the obituary above hers indicated a cause of death as diptheria, and that would be most likely, especially in the winter months.

General Notes for Child Belle Gladys Redfield

Sh is checked off in the columns for "cannot read or write", indicating she was pre-school age in 1880 (She was age six.). From Marriages Recorded in Sedgwick County, KS:

The name and birthdates of her children were found on a microfilm roll on my visit to th Family History Library in Salt Lake City in June, 1999. Early in the century they lived at 4403 Live Oaks St., Dallas; her son, Charles Jr., lists that address on his Social Security Application in 1936. A November, 1999, letter from Twila Blankenship, states the following:
"When Kenneth (Travis) ws in the Georgia Tech band, he played in the Cotton
Bowl January 1, 1955. He visited with Aunt Belle, Howard, and Dorothy, and then
they drove him to Ft. Worth." Thus, the death dates of "Aft 1954" have been
entered for Belle, Howard, and Dorothy.
