General Notes (Wife)
[18401.ged]
Complete obituary from the Humboldt "Union" Newspaper, 1925: MRS. C. JENNETT REDFIELD Was an Early Settler here; her life a long and useful one; Mr. Redfield established first industrial plant in Humboldt; the Redfield family one of the pioneers.
The funeral of Mrs. Cordelia Jennett Redfield, who passed away Saturday Morning November 14, 1925, at her home 420 North Ninth street, was held Monday afternoo from the Presbyterian church at 2:30 p.m. Interment was in Mount Hope cemetery She was laid by the side of her husband, W. A. Redfield, who passed on in 1899
Mrs. Redfield, nee Norton, was born in Killingworth, Middlesex county, Connecticut, in 1843, and on February 21, 1926, would have been 83. She was married to W. A. Redfield in 1867. She was a member of the Womean's Missionary society of the Presbyterian Church.
Miss Norton united with the Congregational church in her girlhood, transferring her membership to the Presbyterian church when she became Mrs. Redfield; for th Redfields are ever unyielding Scotch Presbyterians of the John Calvin and John Knox type, as the writer, being a Redfield, knows.
In 1868, W. A. Redfield, influenced by his cousin, J. C. Redfield, who had come with the Geneva colony to Allen county in 1857, visited Humboldt and, after looking the situation over, foresaw the possibilities of this then new country, returned to Connecticut, and in 1869, moved to Humboldt. He built the home at 320 North Ninth. On the rear of this property he built the Redfield wagon and buggy shop and began the manufacture of these vehicles. He thus became identified with the first industries of this city. This was before the advent of any railroad. The wagons and buggies turned out by Mr. Redfield were of the highest quality as to material and workmanship. No better men ever laid hand upon tools than those engaged by him in the manufacture of his product. They were Mr. Shirk, who did the wood work; Mr. Copeland, blacksmith whose skill was of such a high order that his work was known as "cabinet work in iron"; the carriage trimming was by J. G. Eberstein, of Chicago, who was induced to come west only after much persuasion. His work was art itself; the painting was by the late George Hettinger, whose skill with the brush is too well known by old timers to make any addition necessary here.
The passing of time has proven Mr. Redfield's far seeing vision to have been absolutely correct; but events moved too slow; the country was not yet ready fo the grade of goods he was manufacturing; money was scarce; the panic of 1873; the failure of Jay Cook & Company, bankers, of New York, all but bankrkuped Kansas.
Later, Mr. Redfield entered the hardware business with another cousin under the firm name of W. A. and O. S. Redfield. They dissolved and Mr. Redfield engaged in the grocery and other business to the time of his death in 1899.
Women who came to this land better than half a century ago were of sturdy stock and the mothers of a race of men. To appreicate this was to have lived here in the fifties and sixties.
Of five children three survive; R. B. Redfield, proprietor of the Chanute Produce company; Wilmot A. Redfield; of the Humboldt National bank; and Miss Lunetta, the daughter, who has cared, with her brother, Wilmot, for their mothe since the death of husband and father.
Mrs. Redfield leaves two neices, daughters of her brother. They are; Mrs. Fran Whipple, of Amherst, Mass., and Mrs. George B. Bienapfl of Denver. It is a mos happy situation that Mrs. Bienapfl will and can remain at the home and be a companion for Miss Lunetta, at least for the present. The community extends it deepest sympathy to the surviving ones.
The Redfields have ever been pioneers. First in Massachusetts; then Connecticut; from there to the Western Reserved, Ohio, in 1815, then owned by the State of Connecticut; then Kansas in 1857. R. R. Redfield was the first to bring music to this section, organizing the Humboldt band in 1866. Kansas is the final resting place of two branches of the Redfield tree.
The 1910 census shows her living with Lunetta and Wilmot. Her parents were als born in Connecticut.[Downing.ged]
