General Notes (Husband)

BIO: This son of Marshall L. O'DELL evidently died in childhood. The dates are not legible on the tombstone. The only other documentation found by compiler was the 1860 census record for Marshall's household. A descendent of Jonathan (David's brother), Marjorie WALSH reports that David was a twin to Jonathan, who was born 14 SEP 1857. Per the 1860 census, David was 3 years of age; Jonathan was 2. In 1898, Marshall included in his complying with the Pension Bureau's request for an update on his family's vital data, a list of the birthdates of his children who were still living at that time. David was not on that list, nor was he on the 1870 census. In following Jonathan through the next census enumerations to compare his age with what David's would have been had he survived, compiler found that in 1870, Jonathan was reported to be 13 years of age; in 1880, he was recorded as 21 and head of his own household. Compiler has found no other evidence that Jonathan and David were twins (as of 01 May 1997).

m1. Edith Cornell m2. Faye O'Dell"

BIO: In his "BRIEF HISTORY OF FAMILY OF WILLIAM L. O'DELL and DAISY ALICE McNULTY," James Robert O'Dell wrote of this brother, "Donald left home at age 16 and never returned for several years. In Colorado he married Edith CORNELL. Had two children--Robert Leroy and Alice Lorraine. He died in Jan. 1976; married to Faye ______________?" In another place, James Robert writes that his parents, William and Daisy O'DELL reared Donald's son, Robert L. Compiler's first contact with Donald O'DELL's name and identity was early in 1997, when his name was listed among a list of high school graduates in Stutsman County, ND in 1919. Evidently, Donald at some point lived in that county, probably with his grandparents, Isaac and Alcie O'DELL.

General Notes (Husband)

[bobspu.ged]

BIO: Jordan O'DELL was born "nearly twelve miles from Tazewell, Tennessee..." (As stated in his affidavit 14 Jan. 1908, Mercer Co., IL). Per Deed Book E-49, Jordan purchased land from Wm. GUTHERIE in Laurel Co., KY, 18 SEP 1858; however, he was on the 1850 census in Claiborne Co., TN. His son, James, was born in Laurel Co., but three older children were reported born in TN. History of Pine Tree Baptist Church states that the church was organized in 1867 by Elders Jordan O'DELL, (et al) ... in 1867 Jordan's daughter, Elizabeth, was married in Laurel Co.; in JAN 1868 his son, Nathaniel, married Hannah M. (LICKLITER) GUTHERIE, a widow and 12 years his senior. Jordan or members of his family were not located on the 1870 census in Laurel Co. March 1996; Compiler received a back issue of "Reflections"; the newsletter from Claiborne Co. Hist. Soc., which had an article about the ODELL family. It was compiled by Marjorie WALSH, desc. of Marshall L. ODELL, Jordan's brother. Ms. WALSH supplied a complete birthdate as well as a first name. Per Ms. WALSH's data, "Elisha Jordan ODELL" was born 15 JUL 1827. The source of her data was not listed. Receipt of the C.W. Widow's Pension File for Sarah M. (Mrs. Marshall L.) O'DELL, brought evidence that Jordan had removed from Laurel County, KY to the state of ILLINOIS. On 14 January 1908, Jordan swore via an affidavit in Mercer County, IL, that he was a brother to Marshall L. O'DELL, and gave testimony as to Marshall's age and year of birth. On that document, Jordan's residence is given as "Joy, Mercer County, Illinois." Included in his testimoney for Marshall, is the the information that he (Jordan) had always been led to believe that he was about five years older than Marshall, and that Marshall was born about 1832. By inference, Jordan has supported Mrs. WALSH's report of his own year of birth as 1827; but he gave his month of birth as "August." In April, 1997, compiler examined census records from Mercer County, IL for 1900 and 1910. In 1900, Jordan and Hannah were enumerated in Millersburg Township, Mercer County. Again Jordan's ("Elisha J." on the record) month and year of birth are given as "Aug. 1827." His age on this census is given as "72". The couple has been married 52 years. "Elisha J." gives his occupation as "Clergyman." He reports that he is able to read, but cannot write. A grand daughter, Lela, whose last name is very difficult to read, but may be "ALLBER", is enumerated in their household. This child is reported to be 9 years of age, born in IL. Her father's place of birth is given as IL, also, but her mother's is "KY." Before leaving Laurel County, this couple had two daughters, Elizabeth A. and Mary M. Lela may have been the child of one of these two daughters; however, Hannah reports that she has given birth to 11 children, only 7 or 8 (numeral is smeared) are still living. There could easily have been other daughters who would have been candidates for mother of Lela. In the household next door to the O'DELLS, is William ODELL, 30, born in KY in April of 1870. William is thought to be the son of Nathaniel O'DELL. In 1910, "Elisha J." is again enumerated in Millersburg Township, in the community of "Joy Village." He is reported to be 83 years of age, married to Hannah now a total of 61 years. This time, his occupation is listed as "Labor/Livery Man." Although compiler has found no death record for Elisha Jordan O'DELL (as of 21 April 1997), considering his age on the 1910 census, he probably died in Mercer County, IL.

General Notes (Wife)

[bobspu.ged]

BIO: 1850 Census records Hannah's age as "19" which calculated to about 1831 as a year of birth. The 1860 census gave her age as "25" and recorded her name as "Annah." The discovery of this couple in Mercer County, IL in 1900 and 1910 was most helpful in getting more accurate information on her age. On the 1900 census for Millersburg Township, Hannah gave her age as "69" (enumeration date, 26 June). Hannah reported that she was born in October, 1830 in TENNESSEE. She and her husband had been married 52 years. Hannah reported that she had given birth to eleven children. Her response to the question "how many are still living?" is unclear on the microfilm. It appears to be either "7" or "8". Hannah reported, as did her husband, that she could read, but could not write. Enumerated in the household with Hannah and her husband, "Elisha J." O'DELL, is a nine-year-old female who is classifed as the couple's grand- daughter. The child's surname is also smudged on the film, but appears to be Lela "ALLBER". Lela's place of birth is given as IL; which of the O'DELL's daughters was her mother is unknown. Lela's birthdate is given as "Jan., 1891." In the household next door to Elisha and Hannah, is William ODELL, who evidently is a son to Nathaniel, the O'DELL's oldest son. William reported that he was born in April, 1870, in KENTUCKY. The 1910 census for "Joy Village" shows Hannah and her husband, now married 61 years, as 79 and 83 years of age respectively. Elisha's occupation has now been changed from "Clergyman" to "Livery Man." Apparently the couple is still able to care for themselves, since there is no one else enumerated in their home, and compiler did not notice any of the immediate family living nearby. Although no death data has been found for Elisha and Hannah O'DELL, considering their ages on this census, it is likly that they both died in Mercer County.

General Notes for Child Nathaniel C. O'dell

[bobspu.ged]

m1. Hannah Marinda Lickliter m2. Eliza O'Dell"

BIO: Nathaniel was enumerated as one year of age on the 1850 census for Claiborne County, TN. By July, 1860, his family was residing in Laurel County, KY, where Nathaniel married his first wife, Hannah "GUTHREY" in 1868. Marriage records state that Nathaniel was 19 at the time of his marriage. He was a farmer; a resident of Laurel Co. Both of his parents were born in Tennessee. The couple was married at William Lickliter's. There was a note stuck between the pages of the record book in the handwriting of E.J. O'DELL authorizing his son's marriage to Hannah Marinda GUTHREY. (The bride was 31 years of age; this was her second marriage.) Discovery that Nathaniel's father and mother were in Mercer County, IL in the early 1900s led compiler to examine the census records for that county in 1900 and 1910. Apparently Nathaniel married a second time, about the time of the 1900 census enumeration, since the response to "No. of years married?" was "0" for both Nathaniel and his wife, Eliza. (She is listed as "Wife" on that census.) No data has been found concerning this marriage, but per the census enumeration (23 June 1900), Eliza was 68 years of age; Nathaniel was 51. Nathaniel's occupation was listed as "Day Laborer." Ownership of the home is recorded "O-F" ("owned"-"free"), indicating that either Nathaniel or Eliza had lived in the residence for a substantial period of time. Although there has been no documentation found to support it, compiler believes that she has found at least one son of Nathaniel O'DELL's living near his grandfather, Elisha Jordan O'DELL in Millersburg Township in 1900. Based on his year and place of birth as given on census, compiler has made the assumption that William H. O'DELL, who was enumerated as head of his own household in Mercer County, IL in 1900 and 1910, is the son of Nathaniel and his first wife, Hannah LICKLITER GUTHREY. It is possible that this William was the son of Elisha Jordan O'DELL, but "Eliza O'DELL, 81, widowed, born in SC" is enumerated in William's household in 1910. Her relationship to the head of the household is specified as "Mother." (She would actually have been William's stepmother, however, since she and Nathaniel were probably not married until about 1900.) Compiler was unable to find Nathaniel on the 1910 census, nor was his wife, Eliza, enumerated as head of a household. This is substantial evidence that the "Eliza, ...Mother..." in William's home was Nathaniel's widow. It is also strong evidence that Nathaniel died sometime between 1900 and 1910, probably in Mercer County.

General Notes for Child Mary M. O'dell

[bobspu.ged]

BIO: There was a birth record for "M.M. O'DELL", child of E.J. and Hannah on a microfilm of Laurel County births, deaths, marriages between 1852-1900 found in the Laurel County, KY Public Library in London, KY. At first, compiler thought Mary M. to be the same child, but then the 1860 census gave her age as "7". The birth record on film was for a September, 1856 birth. On the 1900 census for Mercer County, IL, Hannah, Mary's mother, reported that she had given birth to 11 children in her 52 years of marriage, but only seven of them were still living. Since Mary's brother, James M. was listed as 3 years of age in 1860, compiler thought he might have been the "M.M." born in '56. James, too, was enumerated in Mercer Co., IL in 1900; his date of birth was given as "Aug, 1858." According to these reports, there could easily have been another child born to Hannah and E. Jordan between Mary and James. Compiler did not find a marriage record for Mary M. The last record found of this family in Laurel County, KY was at the time of the marriage of Mary's sister, Elizabeth A., to J. GAINS in 1867. They were not found on the 1870 census for that county. Compiler discovered through an affidavit signed by Jordan in 1908 that he was a resident of Mercer County, IL. We now know that he was there as early as 1900, but we do not yet know how much before that he might have arrived in Mercer County. A grand daughter of Hannah and Elisha Jordan was enumerated in their household in 1900. The young lady's first name was clearly "Lela", but her last name was very difficult to decipher. It appeared to be "ALLBER." Compiler has not been able to determine who Lela's mother might have been. It is possible that Mary could have been the mother, but there is no strong evidence to that effect.

General Notes for Child John O'dell

[bobspu.ged]

BIO: Compiler has made the assumption that this individual was one of the 11 children born to Hannah (WILLIAMS) and Elisha Jordan O'DELL which Hannah reported on the 1900 census. Although there has been no actual documentation found to prove this relationship, John, 39 years of age, was enumerated as head of his own household in "Aleda City", Mercer County, in June, 1900. John was reported to have been born in KY, both of his parents in TN. The only other O'DELLs who would have fit this pattern in Mercer County in the same year were Elisha J. and Hannah or Nathaniel O'DELL, whose first wife, Hannah (LICKLITER), was also born in TN. Nathaniel, however, would only have been about 11 years old when John was born. Although compiler did not find John in the E.J. O'DELL household as a child, the last census record found on this family before 1900 was enumerated in July, 1860, a few months before John's birth. Compiler was unable to find this family in Laurel County, KY in 1870. On the 1900 record, John is reported to be 39 years of age; married to Eva for 16 years. The couple had one child, and Eva reported that she had only given birth to one child. John's occupation in 1900 was recorded as "carpenter." Compiler did not find this family on the 1910 census for Mercer County, IL.

General Notes for Child Joseph H. O'dell

[bobspu.ged]

BIO: Compiler has "bent the rules" of reliable research in placing this individual in the family group of Elisha Jordan and Hannah O'DELL. There is no documentation to support this assignment of parents. Joseph H. O'DELL appears on the 1910 census for Mercer County, IL. He gives his place of birth as KY. His age, on the microfilm, is smudged, but it could be either "41" or "47." This could be the son of either Elisha Jordan O'DELL or of Elisha's son, Nathaniel O'DELL. Hannah (WILLIAMS) O'DELL reported in 1900 that she had given birth to 11 children, but not all of them had survived. Nathaniel, her first child, was married in 1868 when he was only about 20 years of age. On the 1860 census, Hannah was 25 years of age. She could have easily been young enough to have had Joseph in 1869. Hannah (LICKLITER), Nathaniel's wife was reported to be 31 years old at the time of her marriage to Nathaniel, her second husband. She, too, could have been the mother of Joseph. In 1910, Mercer County, IL, Joseph H. is shown as the head of his own household in Perryton Township. His wife, Emily, is listed as 40 years of age, born in IL. A 16-year-old son, Glenn, was also born in IL. Under the marital status question, Emily is classifed as married 20 years; Joseph's classification is a bit confusing. It reads "2M, 20 years." Compiler was not clear as to the meaning of the "2 M"--it could mean that Joseph was married twice, or it could mean that Joseph was the second husband of Emily. Although Emily says she was born in IL and Joseph was born in KY, Glenn's "place of birth of father" reads "IL", "place of birth of mother" reads "KY." Compiler assumes this was simply an error on the part of the enumerator in switching the places of birth. Also in Perryton Township, compiler found, in the household of William F. MANNING, a "Susie F. O'DELL, 17, 'Servant', b. IL." Susie's father was born in KY, her mother in IL. Compiler suspects this is a daughter of Joseph H. and Emily O'DELL. Susie's marital status was "Single." It would have been helpful if compiler could have compared 1900 and 1910 census records for Nathaniel's household and Joseph's household. This might have provided answers to some of the questions concerning Joseph's parentage. Unfortunately, compiler did not find Joseph in Mercer County in 1900; although Nathaniel did appear on the 1900 census in the county, his wife was listed as "Eliza O'DELL" and the couple reported that they had been married "0" years. Hannah (LICKLITER) O'DELL's responses to the number of children she had had might have given some clue to whether she was the mother of Joseph O'DELL. Evidently, Hannah had died before 1900 or she and Nathaniel were divorced, and Nathaniel had remarried by that time. Since it is not known when Elisha Jordan and Nathaniel O'DELL left Laurel County, KY, the county of Joseph's birth is uncertain, as well. Compiler did not find either of the two men on the Laurel County census records for 1870, but some church records indicated that E.J. had been in the county later than 1860. Whether the family resided somewhere other than Laurel County before going on to IL is not known.

General Notes (Wife)

[bobspu.ged]

BIO: This child is probably the single female under 5 who was reported on the 1840 census in Claiborne County, TN in Quillen O'DELL's household. Her age was recorded as "10" on the census in Franklin County, AR, in 1850. The O'DELLs moved to Carroll County, AR before the 1860 census enumeration, and were found there in the Berryville area in August of 1860. Elizabeth did not appear in "Q.B." O'DELL's household, but she may have married before that time. "Mary", who is thought to have been Mary AUSMUS and the mother of Elizabeth and her siblings, was not listed in 1860 either. Instead, there was a 37-year-old "Elizabeth A." listed in the usual place for wife of the head of the household. Marjorie WALSH reports that Mary (AUSMUS) O'DELL died in Greenville (Franklin Co.) AR "...in the home of one of her children..." Ms. WALSH gives no date for that death, but it seems likely that Elizabeth had married prior to 1860, that Mary may have died in Elizabeth's home, and that Quillen remarried before the August enumeration of the 1860 census. Compiler has found no documentation of Mary's death, Elizabeth's marriage or death, or of Quillen's second marriage as of May, 1997, however.

General Notes (Husband)

[bobspu.ged]

BIO: Compiler did not locate this family on the census for Laurel Co. in 1880, but this was probably an oversight. On the 1900 census, Elizabeth PARMAN reports that they have been married 24 years, that she has given birth to 12 children, but only 10 survive. Compiler has confirmed only the seven who were enumerated in the household in 1900; there is a Frank PARMAN and wife Hettie (JONES) enumerated in same neighborhood as the OVERBYs and other familiar names, who compiler feels is probably one of the older children of this couple. Apparently the other two children who survived until 1900 had left the family home by census enumeration time. The revised church history reports that Sam PARMAN was the clerk of the Mt. Salem Primitive Baptist Church in 1900. Membership for the same year included "...Mary, Elizabeth and S.I. PARMAN..." (Identity of "Mary" is not known.) A volunteer librarian and member of the Laurel Co. Historical Society was most helpful when compiler returned to Laurel County in Aug. 1995 to do research. Angelee SMITH, herself a descendent of Alexander PARMAN I, confirmed the lineage of Samuel from Alex, son of Frethias PARMAN. She also was able to guide us to the Hopkins Cemetery outside London, where "Pappy" and "Mammy" (Samuel and Elizabeth) PARMAN were buried very near to the grave of their daughter Susie PARMAN CARTER, wife of Cecil CARTER (M-#2). July 1996: Compiler found in Court Order Book G, the following: Ordered that WA Phelps be and he is hereby appointed Guardian to Samuel Parman Son and Heir of Alexander Parman Dec. Said Sam being over 14 years of age and in Court and annominated the Said Phelp as his Said Guardian the Said Phelp being in court taken the required oath and entered into bond with John Lankerly as Surety which bond was approved by the Court. The death of Alex Parman had been recorded as 1869. The above order was part of a special term of court, 1876. This would mean that the guardianship was not set until 7 years after Alex's death. Also Sam married in 1875. Compiler suspects that the court record was copied into the wrong book and that the court order happened about 1870.

General Notes (Wife)

[bobspu.ged]

BIO: Sarah and Lacey O'DELL apparently named their only daughter for Lacey's sister Elizabeth Mahala O'DELL ELLISON. Children of the couple's other children traditionally called her "Aunt Lizzie:. Per family reports, "Lizzie" O'DELL PARMAN was raised a staunch Baptist. Revised church history for the Mt. Salem Primitive Baptist Church near London, KY, reads: "Constituted 1876 at PHELPS school; ....1900: Clerk is Sam PARMAN...(1900) Membership includes... Mary, Elizabeth and S.I. PARMAN." (Identity of "Mary" is not known.) On the 1900 census for Laurel County, Lizzie reports that she has been married to Sam PARMAN for 24 years, and that she has given birth to 12 children, but only 10 are still living. Compiler found 7 of these children still in the family home in 1900. A probable eighth, Frank PARMAN, lived in the same neighborhood as the OVERBEY's in 1900. There is also a "Samuel PARMAN" with wife, "Belle" in dwelling #306 in E.D.#14, who may be another of the PARMAN's sons, but there has not been sufficient data to support this. The younger Samuel PARMAN is reported to have been born in 1875 in INDIANA; there is doubt that he belongs to this PARMAN family, since all the known children were born in KY. There are two other names involved in the marriage of one of the couples' known sons... Alexander's marriage to Dela McCOY in 1906 took place at the home of "Theo" (may be "Thos") PARMAN; Abe and Thos. PARMAN were witnesses. These may have been sons of the PARMANs who had left home before the 1900 census. Some family stories say that Elizabeth and Sam PARMAN left Laurel Co. in the early 1900s and went to KANSAS or one of the DAKOTAs. Since neither Isaac's nor Alex's marriage is reported to have taken place at the residence of their parents, these stories appeared to have been true. Then in August, 1995, compiler went to Laurel County, KY to do research. During the two days there, the graves of "Pappy" and "Mammy" (Samuel and Elizabeth) PARMAN were located near that of their daughter in the Hopkins Cemetery outside London, KY.

General Notes for Child Frank Parman

[bobspu.ged]

BIO: Compiler has not found proof that Frank PARMAN was the son of Samuel and Elizabeth (O'DELL) PARMAN; however, witnesses for the marriage of Frank PARMAN to Hettie JONES included "Frank O'DELL," the brother of Elizabeth PARMAN. In 1902, Frank PARMAN was a witness at the marriage of Isaac PARMAN to Belle WATKINS. Isaac was a son to Samuel and Elizabeth PARMAN. On the 1900 census, Elizabeth (O'DELL) PARMAN reported that she had given birth to 12 children (since her marriage to Samuel about 1876), and only 10 were still living. Seven of those were enumerated in Samuel's household (including Isaac) in 1900. Frank was residing in the same area (Bush); the other two children have not been identified. Frank PARMAN may have died before Oct., 1916; there is a marriage recorded for "Hettie PARMAN" to Luther BAKER in that month. In Montgomery County, IN, compiler found Frank and Hettie PARMAN on the 1910 census. They lived next door to Alex PARMAN, son of Isaac and Elizabeth. Frank was listed as 32; Hettie was 28. They had been married 12 years and had two children, both still living. All family members were born in KENTUCKY.

General Notes for Child Alexander (S.O. Samuel I. 1855) Parman

[bobspu.ged]

BIO: At the time of marriage, Alex was living in Corbin, KY; He worked for the railroad; he was 21 and had not been married before. The marriage took place at Theo PARMAN's with Abe PARMAN and Theo PARMAN as witnesses. ("Theo" was difficult to read; could have been "Thos.") July 1996: In Montgomery County, IN, compiler found "Alex and Delila PARMAN" on the 1910 census. They were living in Walnut Twp. near Crawfordsville, IN. Next door, in HH #40, was Frank PARMAN and wife, Hettie. Also listed was a daughter, Dora, one year old, born in Kentucky. March 1997: Compiler found this family in Fulton County, IN on the 1920 census. Apparently Alexander had followed his two uncles from Montgomery County to Fulton County between 1910 and 1920. Per the 1910 census, Dora was the only child the couple had, but by 1920 there were seven children in the family, the youngest just one year and four months of age. Alexander's occupation on this record was "Blacksmith."

General Notes for Child Lacy Parman

[bobspu.ged]

BIO: There is a marriage for "JONES, James to PARMAN, Lucy, 23 Aug 1916," in the General Marriage Index excerpts cited in BRANCHES OF LAUREL; Vol. X, #1; Jan. 1995 (publication of the Laurel Co. Hist. Soc.; London, KY.) These excerpts are taken from the "General Marriage Index for Laurel County, KY," located in London. Compiler has been unable to confirm that this is the record for a marriage of "Lacy PARMAN." Lacy would have been approximately 27 years old at the time of this marriage. Lacy PARMAN was probably named for her grandfather, William Lacey/Lacy O'DELL, who died at Camp Cumberland Ford in Knox County, while serving in the Union Army.
