BIO: Most documents show the birth of Isaac L. O'DELL as 18 JAN 1861; the 1900 census, however shows his birth as JAN 1862. One document in the Civil War Pension File states that he was two months of age when his father died in Camp Cumberland Ford, Knox County, KY. All other evidence indicates that he would have been one year and two months of age when Lacy O'DELL died, 18 MAR 1862. In August, 1997, photocopies of Isaac's obituary and another of an article about Isaac from the Stutsman County section of a NORTH DAKOTA History book, give his date of birth as "18 January 1862." On the 1870 census, Isaac L. is listed in Sarah O'DELL's home as being 8 years old. The widow and her four children were living in the Lynn Camp Post Office area in Laurel County, KY at this time. Sarah married William A. PHELPS in 1874. On the 1880 census, William PHELPS household consists of William, Sarah, his wife, his daughters, Louisa and Virginia (compiler's grandmother), William's sons John and William J. and a "Hireling" listed as "William MARION". Then, listed as a different family within the same household are "Isaac O'dell, son-in-law" and "Alcy E., daughter." Laurel County Marriage Records show the marriage of Isaac L. O'DELL and "Alice E. PHELPS" on 22 February 1880. Data given about the groom is that he is 18 years of age, that he was born in Claiborne Co., Tennessee and that this was his first marriage. The wedding took place at the home of William PHELPS. Witnesses were Wm. BROCK and "F.R. O'DELL" (This is probably an error and should have read "W.F." or "Frank" O'DELL, Isaac's older brother/ compiler's grandfather.) This wedding would have taken place about 3 months before the census enumeration for 1880. (The "BRANCHES OF LAUREL" reference listed above gives "2/19/1880" as the date of this marriage; this was probably the date of the filing of application for marriage.) William A. PHELPS died in 1887. In February, 1892 there is a deed recorded whereby Isaac L. O'DELL, Alcie E. O'DELL and Wm. J. PHELPS (probably Wm.'s son "Jason") convey their "child's share(s)" of the property belonging to "A. PHELPS, deceased" (William) to Sarah A. PHELPS "for and in consideration of $25 each... in hand and surely paid..." The deed specifies that this is the same land "... whereon Sarah PHELPS now lives..." Apparently the three agreed to give Sarah full ownership, at least of their three shares, and to give up any claim to William's estate. Compiler next found Isaac and Alcie (PHELPS) O'DELL on the 1900 census in Walnut Township, Montgomery County, IN. The third child listed on this census was born in Montgomery County in 1888; it appears that compiler's mother's "Uncle Ike" was the first of the O'DELLs to move from Laurel County, KY to INDIANA. On the 1900 census, Ike and Alcie have six children residing in their home. One of the questions on the 1900 census was addressed to the wife as to how many children she had given birth to and how many of those were still living in 1900. Alcie responded that she had given birth to 8 and seven were still living, so there evidently was one child gone from the home by census time that year. Those still in the home were: Flora; William L.; Alassy C.; China H.; Robert E. and Ida B., the baby, listed as 10 months of age. Per a letter from Hubert D. O'DELL in March, 1996, his aunt and uncle, Alcie and "Ike" O'DELL, left Montgomery County, IN in the early 1900's and relocated in Eldridge, North Dakota where "Ike' was post master for several years. Hubert makes reference in the same letter to "Ike" and his youngest son "Lacy Paul", visiting the family in northern INDIANA about 1924, after the death of Alcie E. PHELPS O'DELL. Hubert makes the statement that "his family all moved to California..." but it is not clear whether this was in reference to "Ike's family' or to the family of Lacy Paul. In August, 1997, compiler made contact with George L. BARRON, a genealogical researcher in Jamestown, ND (Stutsman County). Mr. BARRON agreed to conduct a search for this O'DELL family, and soon provided compiler with a large amount of documentation on the family. Among the obituaries, marriage records, cemetery indexes, etc. were photocopies of articles from two county history books which concern Isaac O'DELL. The first, a lengthy article devoted to Isaac, is transcribed below in its entirety:
"HISTORY OF NORTH DAKOTA," p 935 "ISAAC L. O'DELL" Isaac L. O'DELL, a merchant of Eldridge, has been engaged in the conduct of this business for about seven years, but has resided in the state since 1905. He was born near Cumberland Gap in the north- east part of TENNESSEE, January 18, 1862, a son of Lacy and Sarah (Owerby) O'Dell, the latter a daughter of a plantation and slave owner of Virginia. However, Mr. O'Dell, the father of our subject, joined the Union army and because of his position on the question of the right of the south to withdraw from the Union he was forced to secretly leave his Tennessee home at night in order to save his life, and went to London, Kentucky. He died of fever in that state and was there buried. To him and his wife were born four children: Mrs. Elizabeth PARMAN, living in Kentucky; John Henry, of Indiana; William Franklin, of OKLAHOMA; and Isaac L. The last named was but two years old when he went with his mother to KENTUCKY and spent his boyhood in the family home near London, acquiring a district school education. On the 22nd of February, 1878, he was married in Laurel county, that state, to Alcie PHELPS, a native of Kentucky, and they have become the parents of nine children: Dora E., the wife of W.T. MOORE, who follows farming near Salem, OREGON; Flora A., who died at the age of twenty-five years; John Franklin, who died when a year old; William, who is farming in NORTH DAKOTA; Catherine B. who became the wife of Roy TORY and died at Lakota, NORTH DAKOTA, in 1915; Helen, the wife of Frank ALEXANDER, of SOUTH DAKOTA; Robert, who was born in INDIANA and is now with the Rock Island Plow Company at Minneapolis; Ida Belle, at home; and Lacy Paul, at Jamestown. Mr. and Mrs. O'DELL began their domestic life in KENTUCKY, but after seven years removed with their family to INDIANA, settling near Crawfords- ville, in Montgomery county, where for nine years Mr. O'DELL was employed by James A. MOUNT, for four years chief executive of that state. He lived there until 1905, when he sold out all his interests in INDIANA and made his way to Jamestown, NORTH DAKOTA. For four years he cultivated a rented farm and then purchased a stock of merchandise from Alvin VESSEY, continuing the business in the same building for five years. In 1914 he purchased ground and erected a substantial business block costing about five thousand dollars, and in this he has a stock of general merchandise and machinery valued at forty-five hundred dollars. He is doing a good business and his trade is steadily growing. His store is neatly and tastefully arranged and his goods attractively displayed. In addition to conducting his merchantile interests he served as postmaster of Eldridge for eight years. Mr. O'DELL has put forth every possible effort to aid in the upbuilding of his village. He was one of the organizers of the Eldridge Commercial Club in 1915 and became its first president. Since that time the club has been instrumental in securing the establishment of a bank, a blacksmith shop and a restaurant in this place. Politically Mr. O'DELL is a republican, and for two years filled the office of justice of the peace. He belongs to the Masonic lodge at Jamestown and is an exemplary representative of the craft, loyal to its teachings and its purposes.
Another book, "A CENTURY OF STORIES, JAMESTOWN AND STUTSMAN COUNTY 1883-1983," (Towns and Townships -- page 286), carries an article on Eldridge town and township, which includes the following passages: "...This structure was built in 1881 by Henry VESSEY, who moved here from Sauk Centre, Minn. It is of Victorian style with ginger bread decorations and dormer windows. It once had a large porch across the front, but this was removed a few years ago because it overlapped railroad property... ...Isaac O'DELL built a second grocery store in 1913 on the south side of the tracks, and this was built in the style of a pitched roof and false front. This is owned by the McDONALD family at the present time..."
Mr. BARRON has also provided copies of an obituary and another item from the Jamestown newspaper of the day, "The Jamestown Sun."

General Notes (Wife)
[bobspu.ged]
BIO: This daughter of William PHELPS and sister of compiler's grandmother is shown in the PHELPS household in 1860 as being an infant, just a few months of age. She should have shown up on the 1870 census as about 10 years old, but her name was not listed in William's household that year. She appears again in 1880 as the daughter of William PHELPS, but also as one part of a couple who are counted as a second family in the same dwelling. Isaac L. O'DELL is listed with her as William's son-in-law. Marriage records in Laurel Co., KY show this marriage took place in February, just before the census was taken. (The "BRANCHES OF LAUREL" reference below shows this marriage on "2/19/1880", probably the day the application was filed.) In 1892, after her father's death, "Alsey" (who signed her name "Alcie E. Odell"), her brother William J. and her husband, Isaac L. O'DELL, sold their shares of William PHELPS' property to Isaac's mother, Sarah Ann (OVERBY) O'DELL PHELPS. Then by 1900, Alcie and Isaac had removed to INDIANA and are shown on the census in Walnut Twp., Montgomery Co., IN with 6 of their 8 children. (Alcie reported that she gave birth to 8 children, but that 7 were living at that time). Flora, the oldest child at home, was 19, so it was evident that an older child had married and left home. (Dora E. md W.T. MOORE in 1898) On the marriage record for Alcie and Isaac, the data given for the bride is that she was 20 years old (2 years older than Isaac); she was born in Laurel Co.; her father was born in Grayson Co., VA; her mother in Laurel Co.; the wedding took place at the home of William PHELPS; and the witnesses were: Wm. BROCK and "F.R. O'DELL". (This is probably "Frank" or "W.F."; compiler's grandfather and a brother to Isaac). It was suspected that compiler's mother was named for this aunt. The given name appears in a variety of spellings; Alsey, Alcie, Alice, Alesy and even Allice, depending on which document is being examined. Compiler's mother's first name was spelled "Alcie". The discovery of "Alice Elizabeth PHELPS O'DELL" on an index of obituaries in the Stutsman County, ND Library confirmed compiler's suspicion that her mother was named for this aunt. To this point, only the middle initial "E." was known. -------------- April, 1996 - A letter to compiler from Hubert D. O'DELL talked about Alcie PHELPS -- "My mother had a sister, Alcie, whom she was very fond of and whom I never seen; they corresponded regularly and Aunt Alcie sent my mother a "setting" of silver laced wyandotte chicken eggs, I guess they were what you would call 'pretty' but as I remember their eggs werent any different than mothers old 'domineckers.' Now there was one brother to Mom and aunt Alcie whose name was Jason...and Uncle Ike moved to Indiana and my mother came to Indiana to 'take care' of aunt Alcie when she gave birth, my Mother liked Indiana so much... Uncle Ike moved his family to Eldridge North Dakota, he became post master there for years; Now I think that the baby you wrote about was Aunt Alcies youngest son whose name was Lacy Paul and it runs in my mind that he was about your mother's age, he was one of the youngest soldiers in the first World War. Soon after my mother died in 1924, Lacy Paul came to Ind. for a while. After Aunt Alcie passed away, uncle Ike came to visit dad and they came and spent some time with Harriette and I in 1940... His (Uncle Ike's) family all went to California...My mother and Aunt Alcie were very close and Uncle Ike and my dad were close..." ----------------------------- July 1996: Compiler found a birth record listed in Vol. 2, Index to Birth Records, Montgomery Co., IN, 1882-1920, p 186. It reads: "ODELL___female Isaac ODELL Alice PHILLIPS, 20 August 1893, Bk. H5-35." From birth years given on the 1900 census, there is no female whose date of birth matches that of this record. Alcie did report on the 1900 census that one of her eight children was no longer living; it is possible that this child was "the female" born August, 1893, between the births of Robert E. (Aug 1892) and Ida (July 1899). -------------------------------- August, 1997: Compiler established contact with George L. BARRON, a genealogical researcher in Jamestown, ND. Mr. BARRON has provided a large amount of photocopied documentation on this family. One of the items copied was an article from a ND History concerning Isaac O'DELL and his family, residents of Stutsman County. In that article, the ninth child of Isaac and Alcie is named. "John Franklin, who died when a year old..." It is likely that the "female" born to this couple in August of 1893 was actually a male, John Franklin. However, it should also be noted that there were at least two other gaps between births of the children in this family that would have been possible times for John Franklin's birth. The following obituary and follow up article from the Jamestown newspaper were copied by Mr. BARRON:
p 1; 22 October 1938: MRS. ISAAC O'DELL, ELDRIDGE PIONEER PASSED AWAY FRI. --------------------- Funeral Services at Eddy Funeral Chapel Monday at 2:30 o'Clock ----------------- Mrs. Alice Elizabeth PHELPS O'DELL, wife of Isaac O'DELL, pioneer citizen of Eldridge, passed away at her home in Eldridge Friday afternoon, her death having been caused from pneumonia after a long illness. She is survived by her husband and the following sons and daughters: William, at home; Lacey, Jamestown; Robert, Los Angeles, Calif.; Mrs. Claude VAUGHT, Jamestown; Mrs. Helen ALEXANDER, Millbank, S.D.; and Mrs. Dora BURR, Oregan City, OREGON. George Monroe THOMAS, pastor of the Congregational church was in charge of the last rites. Lyle NAGLE sang "The Old Rugged Cross" and "Till We Meet Again." Burial was made in Highland Home cemetery. Pallbearers were G. ANDERSON, Fred WIER, J. FAIRFIELD, A.B. LAWRENCE, E. TORREY and F. KRUEGER. Mr. and Mrs. O'DELL came to NORTH DAKOTA 33 years ago and have lived at Eldridge since that time. The deceased was born in Laurel County, KENTUCKY, November 2, 1859. She was Miss Elizabeth Alice PHELPS, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William PHELPS, before her marriage February 2, 1877 to Mr. O'DELL at London, KENTUCKY. Mr. and Mrs. O'DELL were the parents of nine children. Three have passed away. General Notes for Child John Franklin (S.O. Isaac Lacy) O'dell
[bobspu.ged]
BIO: Compiler found a birth listed in Montgomery County, IN birth indexes, for a "female" born to Isaac ODELL and "Alice PHILLIPS". No known female born to this couple corresponds with this date of birth. Upon receipt of copies of a number of documents from Stutsman County, ND, compiler found the report in a NORTH DAKOTA History book, that Isaac and Alcie had 9 children. Among them was "John Franklin, who died at one year..." No other documentation has been found concerning this child. Although the August, 1893 birth listed may have been for the "male" child of this couple, there are at least two other gaps between births of the other eight children when John Franklin could have been born.

General Notes for Child Flora Alabama (Aunt Bam) O'dell
[bobspu.ged]
BIO: The obituary for Flora A. O'DELL, in Stutsman County, ND, specifies "Miss". In a letter to compiler in Nov., 1997, Lyla (VAUGHT) MILKE, daughter of Flora Alabama's sister, Ida Belle, wrote, "Aunt Bam (Flora) never married." 16 Aug. 1997, approximately one week after Mr. BARRON sent compiler an e-mail message concerning the death of Flora Alabama O'DELL from indexes in Stutsman County, he followed up on this family with a large amount of documentation he had located in the Stutsman County repositories. Included in this packet of data were several obituaries of members of the Isaac L. O'DELL family. Two such items concerning Flora Alabama were photocopied from the "Jamestown Sun."
p 6, 18 Nov. 1909 "O'DELL FUNERAL" Last Rites for Eldridge Girl Held Monday The funeral of Miss Alabama O'DELL was held Monday at the residence in Eldridge at ten o'clock. Rev. Phillips, of Jamestown conducting the service. Following the services at the residence the remains were brought to Jamestown and interment made Monday afternoon at 2 o'clock in Highland Home Cemetery. The services were attended by many relatives and friends of the young girl whose death came so suddenly. Her sister, Miss Katherine O'Dell, had left Riverside, California to attend the funeral but was unable to reach her home in time. Flora Alabama O'Dell was born in 1881 near London, Laurel County, Kentucky, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Isaac O'Dell. She lived the greater part of her life at Eldridge, and also had many friends in Jamestown. She was ill but a short time proceeding her death, which was due to a complication of typhoid fever described as "walking typhoid." She was up until Wednesday and died Friday about noon after an illness of but two days. Many friends will mourn her loss, and extend their sympathy to the family in this bereavement.
p 8, 18 Nov. 1909 ELDRIDGE Died, at Eldridge, Nov. 12th, Flora A. O'Dell, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Isaac O'Dell. Born Nov. 20, 1880, Laurel County, Ky. Services were held at the residence, Rev. Phillips officiating, burial at Highland cemetery, Nov. 15th. Flora has made her home with her parents and lived here four years. All that knew her will never forget that kind and cheerful friend. A brother, Will O'Dell of Dayton, Ohio, arrived in time to attend the funeral, also a sister, Mrs. Alexander, of Josephine, N.D. Two sisters residing at Riverside, Cal., failed to arrive in time to attend. While in our midst a home is in sorrow, and death has broken a family tie. The writer in behalf of the people of Edridge and vicinity extend to the house of sorrow our heartfelt sympathy.-- J.E. McGillivray.

BIO: William's parents migrated from Laurel County, KY to Montgomery County, IN, then on to Stutsman County, ND. They were still in Montgomery County at census time in 1900. William's age was given as 17. A paternal uncle of William's, John Henry "Bud" O'DELL, also migrated to Montgomery County from Laurel County, KY. This uncle stayed for a few years and two or three of his older children stayed in the area after the rest of the family went to northern Indiana. July 1996: Compiler found Montgomery Co. Death Indexes at the library in Crawfordsville. Among the familar O'DELL names, such as Benjamin, was Ben's wife Edna CEDARS and a "Daisy Alice O'DELL, 70 years, d. 10-14-1952." Later a marriage was found for William L. O'DELL to Daisy McNULTY in 1903. Calculation makes her birth date the same year as William's. The supplemental records show: "ODLE, William L.; Father-J. ODLE; Mother- Alice E. THELPH; age of groom 21; date of marriage 9/9/1903; Bk. W-45-27". There is little doubt that this is the marriage record for William, son of Isaac, in spite of the errors in Isaac's initial and Alcie'e maiden name. "Marriage Records, Oct. 1901-April 1906," p 27, shows the same data plus William's occupation as Farmer, place of birth, KY, the fact that it was his first marriage, and that the marriage was performed by A. PLUNKETT. Daisy died in Montgomery County in 1952 and is buried in the Masonic Cemetery in Crawfordsville, IN. Compiler did not find a death or burial record for William in Montgomery County. The city directories of Crawfordsville caused some confusion. William, age 48, is listed in Ripley Twp. in 1931; in 1938, "Mrs. Daisy and Byron O'DELL" are listed at 1114 Danville Ave., but William is not listed. Compiler did not find any of the three in the 1944 directory. Compiler did not find any births recorded for this couple, but Byron was probably a son. Byron's marriage appears in the marriage index for 1940. In a letter to compiler, March 1996, "Knute" O'DELL, compiler's uncle and a cousin of William L. O'DELL's, reported "...Uncle Ike...His family all went to CALIFORNIA..." Researching the Family Archives CD of Social Security Death Index, Nov., 1996, compiler found William O'DELL (date of birth in agreement with records calculated and supported by U.S. Census records) who died Feb. 1976. "Last known address...Santa Rosa, CA." After a wait of several months, compiler finally received a response from Sonoma County, CA re the death certificate of William O'DELL. On 17 March 1997, a copy of this certificate was received. Parents of the deceased were listed as "Isaac O'DELL" and "Alice E. PHELPS." Place of birth of deceased was "KY." "William Lundy O'DELL" died 16 Feb. 1976 at 8:15 p.m. in Santa Rosa Convent Hospital. His residence was given as "4073 Madera Avenue, Santa Rosa..." His last occupation was "Pipefitter" at the U.S. Navy Shipyards. He was reported to have lived in CA 34 years, in Sonoma County 23 years. Data given included his birth date and place. The informant was "Mabel Bailey O'DELL, Spouse." William was 93 years of age, per the death certificate. He had been ill only about 9 days at the time of his death, but the list of serious physical conditions would indicate that he had suffered from some of these problems for quite some time. The actual cause of death was "Pneumonia due to or as a consequence of cardiac failure and/or as a result of arteriosclerosis. Other significant conditions: Colon CA w/ metasteses." William was buried by the Eggen and Lance Mortuary on 19 Feb. 1976 at Santa Rosa Memorial Park. In August, 1997, compiler made contact with a genealogical researcher in Stutsman County, ND. George I. BARRON has provided compiler with the following item from the Jamestown, ND newspaper:
WILLIAM O'DELL William O'Dell, 94, of Santa Rosa Calif., former resident of Eldridge, died Monday. Funeral services will be held Thursday in Santa Rosa. Mr. O'DELL is survived by his wife, Mabel; one brother, L.P. O'Dell, Fresno, Calif., and one sister, Mrs. Claude Vaught, Jamestown.
Although William eventually migrated to CA, in 1917, when the NORTH DAKOTA History cited above was published, William was farming in ND, per the article included in that history about Isaac L. O'DELL. In 1909, "Will" O'DELL was reported to be "of Dayton, Ohio", in the obituary of his sister, Flora Alabama. When Will's mother died, in 1938, he was residing in the home of his parents. He was a resident of Santa Rosa in 1957, when his father died. A letter from Lyla (VAUGHT) MILKE, William's niece, in Nov. 1997 was of great help in confirming some of the data about William O'DELL. Lyla, writing for her mother, Ida Belle (O'DELL) VAUGHT, sister of William O'DELL, stated that William had indeed been the husband of Daisy McNulty, and this couple had five sons. Byron was one of the five. There was also a Robert, who, as of 1997 resides at 4444 U.S. 98N - 696, Lakeland FL, 33809. Robert was the third of William O'DELL's sons. He was described as being "87 years of age 5-7-97." Mrs. MILKE writes, "I feel Robert can supply a lot of facts of his immediate family -- I only know he's one of 5 boys..." Mrs. MILKE also gave the divorce of Daisy and William L. O'DELL as about 1930. She said that William left INDIANA about 1938. About his parents, James Robert O'DELL wrote: "William and Daisy O'DELL separated and divorced about 1930. He later went west and lived in N.D. and CA. In CA he married again. He died there in 1976. Daisy continued to live in the Crawfordsville area until her death in 1952. General Notes for Child Katherine B. (Kate) O'dell
[bobspu.ged]
BIO: Compiler first found this daughter of the O'DELLs on the 1900 census in Montgomery County, IN. Here she was listed as "Alassy C.", her date of birth was given as "Apr. 1888." When George L. BARRON, Genealogical Researcher from Stutsman County, ND sent a large amount of documentation from that county on this family, this child's name appeared as "Katherine" O'DELL in most sources, but in the article about her father in the NORTH DAKOTA History, she was listed as "Catherine B." The marriage record photocopied for compiler shows the bride as "Katherine", her age as "22" as of Dec. 13, 1910. The ND History makes the statement that Catherine B. "...became the wife of Roy TORY and died at Lakota, North Dakota, in 1915..." The records of graduates from Stutsman County Schools, 1885-1925, lists "Katherine O'DELL, graduate, in 1908 from the 12th grade, Jamestown High School." Photocopies of two pages from the Stutsman County Cemetery Supplement for Highland Home Cemetery cause the most confusion. The first lists, "TORREY, Mary Katherine Apr 8, 1889 - Jan 31, 1924". This is the first indication of the "Mary" part of this individual's name. Also, the months and days of both the birth and the death dates are the same as "Catherine O'DELL's", but the years were not. Compiler sent a request for the year of death to be rechecked and for consideration to be given that these cemetery listings are for the same individual. 22 August 1997, a response from Mr. BARRON in Jamestown, ND, was received with the information that these entries had indeed been misprinted and duplicated for the same person. Upon visiting the grave site of Katherine TORREY, Mr. further confirmed Katherine's year of death as 1914. He made note of the printed error so that they may be corrected in the index. There has been no documentation to support the theory that Irwin TORREY, who served as pallbearer at Isaac L. O'DELL's funeral in 1940, was the son of Katherine and Roy TORREY. This was simply "surmised" by compiler, and was not confirmed. A letter in Nov. 1997, from Lyla (VAUGHT) MILKE, daughter of Ida Belle (O'DELL) VAUGHT, sister to "Kate" (O'DELL) TORREY, stated that "Kate" had only one child with Roy TORREY-- Pearl TORREY, who later married Orvil LUSK. "Torreys lived on a farm outside of Eldridge, ND...Roy TORREY remarried. Don't know how many but know of 4 kids -- Pearl lives in Eugene, OR. Irwin may be stepbrother to Pearl--..." Katherine apparently spent some time in CALIFORNIA prior to her marriage. The obituary for her sister, Flora Alabama, in 1909 states that "Miss Katherine O'DELL, had left Riverside, California to attend the funeral but was unable to reach her home in time." Another item from the Jamestown weekly paper states that, "Two sisters residing at Riverside, Cal., failed to arrive in time to attend." (Flora A.'s funeral).

General Notes for Child China Helen (Helen) O'dell
[bobspu.ged]
m1. Frank B. Alexander m2. Severt Thompson
BIO: Per the Marriage Record, China Helen O'DELL was only 16 years of age when she married Frank B. ALEXANDER, of a neighboring county in ND. Helen's father signed his consent to the marriage. The article about her father in the NORTH DAKOTA History, plus two obituaries for members of her family indicate that Helen and her husband were residents of SOUTH DAKOTA after their marriage; one of the obituaries (1938) specifies "Milbank, SD." However, the obituary of her sister, Flora A., in 1909 states that "Mrs. ALEXANDER...of Josephine, ND," was a sister to the deceased. Helen's name appears in an index of Stutsman County graduates, and, although the year is not given, it appears that she only completed the 8th grade in school at Eldridge, ND, where her family resided. Helen's husband, Frank, died and was buried in the Eldridge Cemetery in 1933. The only other mention of Helen found by Mr. BARRON, was in the obituary of her brother, Robert, in 1957. Per that source, Helen and two other brothers, "Al P" and "Will" O'DELL were all residents of Fresno, CA. Family information contained in a letter to compiler in Nov., 1997, from Ida B. (O'DELL) VAUGHT, Helen's sister (written for Ida by her daughter Lyla), states that Helen did go to Fresno, CA after the death of her first husband, and that she eventually married to Severt THOMPSON. Per Mrs. VAUGHT, Helen died and was buried in Fresno. No date for Helen's second marriage or for her death were included in that letter, however, since she was listed as a survivor to her brother, Robert in August, 1957, as "Mrs. Helen ALEXANDER," the second marriage obviously was sometime after August 1, 1957. Helen probably died between 1957 and 1976, since she is named as a survivor in Robert's obituary, but is not mentioned in William's in 1976 nor in "Al P"'s in 1980.

General Notes for Child Robert E. O'dell
[bobspu.ged]
BIO: Robert was listed on the 1900 census in Montgomery County, IN with his parents. Family tradition has reported that Isaac took his family to NORTH DAKOTA, where first he, and later one of his sons served as Post Master in Stutsman County for many years. Other family reports were that the entire family eventually migrated to CALIFORNIA, but there had been no known contact with any of the IN relatives for many years. Compiler found a Robert E. O'DELL on the Social Security Death Index. This Robert E. obtained his Social Security Number in CALIFORNIA. He died in October, 1978; his last known address was given in the SS Index as "New Orleans, LA." (This was later proved to not be the son of Isaac O'DELL, but compiler wonders if it might be Robert's son, Robert E., Jr.) August, 1997: compiler established contact with George L. Barron, a member of the James River Genealogy Club, Jamestown, ND. Mr. BARRON identified Robert O'DELL among the names on a Stutsman County Library index of obituaries. A short time later, Mr. BARRON provided a large amount of documentation collected in repositories in Stutsman County, ND for members of the Isaac L. O'DELL family. Included in these items of documentation was the following obituary, which Mr. BARRON photocopied in its entirety:
p 3, 01 Aug. 1957: FORMER ELDRIDGE MAN, ROBERT O'DELL, DIES IN LOS ANGELES HOSPITAL Robert O'DELL, 13967 Van Nuys Blvd.; Pacoima, Calif., a former resident of Eldridge, died in a Los Angeles hospital last night after months of serious illness. Mr. O'DELL, who was born in VIRGINIA, came with his parents Mr. and Mrs. I.L. O'DELL to NORTH DAKOTA and was one of the early Eldridge settlers. He attended school and grew to manhood in the Eldridge area and later he and Miss Emma THOMPSON, Winnipeg, CANADA, were married and became parents of three children. In 1938 Mr. and Mrs. O'DELL left Eldridge and after a brief stay in MINNESOTA, they settled in Pacoima, Calif., where he was self-employed. Survivors include his widow, Mrs. Emma THOMPSON O'DELL, and three children, Mrs. Gordon Dawson, Robert O'DELL, Jr., and Gordon O'DELL, Los Angeles, Calif., two sisters, Mrs. Claude VAUGHT, Tappen, and Mrs. Helen ALEXANDER, and two brothers, Lacey O'DELL, Frezno, Calif., and Will O'DELL, Santa Rosa, Calif. Also surviving are two nieces who reside in Jamestown, Mrs. Philip SCHNEIDER and Mrs. Lloyd MILKE. Funeral services have not been set yet, but will take place in Pacoima, Calif., with burial in the family lot there.
There are a few discrepancies when facts recorded in the above obituary and facts from other documents are compared. The obituary states that Robert was born in VA, however, all census records consulted, as well as the ND History book containing the article about Isaac O'DELL and his family, consistently report Isaac born in TN, and his children all born in either KENTUCKY or INDIANA. There is another "Robert O'DELL" listed in the Eddy Funeral Home Index, p 19. There is no date/year of birth given for this individual; the date of death is "1913." Even though Isaac and his wife were listed in the same index there is no evidence that the Robert found in this source was connected to Isaac or members of his family. The ND History which carried the article about Isaac L. O'DELL, in 1917, stated that, at that time, Robert was "with the Rock Island Plow Company at Minneapolis." His actual occupation is not specified.

General Notes for Child Ida Belle O'dell
[bobspu.ged]
BIO: The 1900 Census shows this child with a middle initial, but it is unreadable. It also gives the year of birth as "1898", however her age is given as "10/12" as of June, 1900. Compiler located this family on the 1900 census for Montgomery County, IN, while on a research trip to Crawfordsville, IN. The only other information added to the Isaac O'DELL family from that time until August, 1997, was taken from letters to compiler from Hubert D. O'DELL (dec'd spring, 1997.) Ida was not mentioned in those letters. A search of genealogy holdings in Stutsman County, ND, in August, 1997, brought a response from a genealogist there, George L. BARRON. Mr. BARRON has provided compiler with a large amount of data and photocopies of documentation concerning this family. Very little of it addresses Ida directly, however, Mr. BARRON did find that she was still living, and made contact with her by telephone. He reported that Ida seemed interested in the work compiler was attempting on the O'DELL history, and he told her that she might expect contact from compiler. Compiler placed a call to Ida on 17 August 1997. After learning that Ida had had a recent fall, compiler chose to terminate the conversation, and asked Ida if she was ameniable to receiving a letter containing questions, etc. Ida answered in the affirmative. She did make the statement that "the family never talked about the family tree, so I can't help you any. I just don't know anything more than what you already have." Compiler assured her that most of what she might help with is data concerning her own immediate family. The index of Stutsman County graduates 1885-1925, lists Ida as having graduated from 8th grade in 1914 at "Eldridge 12." (This probably indicates a 1st-12th-grade school.) While there was no marriage record included in the data provided by Mr. BARRON for Ida, her last name now is VAUGHT. Per the 1997 Jamestown City Directory, there is a "VAUGHT, Claude r421 18 St.NE" listed just above "VAUGHT, Ida retd h421 18th St. NE Apt 208." The phone number for both VAUGHTs is the same. Compiler assumed that "Claude" was a son of Ida's. (During the brief phone conversation with Mrs. VAUGHT, she did say that she had given birth to 5 children, but did not give details about them.) (There is also a "VAUGHT, Chester E r511 8 Av NW" listed just above the name of Claude VAUGHT in the City Directory. Compiler thought this might have been another son.) The article about Isaac O'DELL, from the ND History, lists one of the children of Isaac and Alcie as "Ida Belle, at home." The obituary of a sister, Flora A. O'DELL, in 1909, does not mention Ida by name, but does contain the statement that "two sisters residing at Riverside, Cal., failed to arrive in time to attend" (the funeral). One of the two, Katherine, was named in another article concerning Flora's death. Since Dora was married and living in Salem, OR, compiler assumed that Ida was the second sister who was in CALIFORNIA, possibly staying with or visiting one of the brothers there. Per the obituary of Ida's mother, in 1938, "Mrs. Claude VAUGHT, Jamestown;..." was one of the survivors. Ida and Robert were the only two of Isaac O'DELL's children mentioned in his obituary -- "Mrs Claude VAUGHT, Jamestown, is a daughter." (Robert was mentioned as having accompanied the body of his father from CA.) The 1957 obituary of Robert O'DELL, lists two sisters, "Mrs. Claude VAUGHT, Tappen, and Mrs. Helen ALEXANDER..." (Tappen is in the neighboring county just west of Stutsman, Kidder County, ND.) When William, another brother died, in 1976, "Mrs. Claude VAUGHT, Jamestown" was again listed as a survivor, as she was four years later, when "Al P. O'DELL" died. On the page from Highland Home Cemetery in the Stutsman County cemetery listings of the ND Cemetery Index which contains the data from graves of Flora A., "Mother" and Isaac L. O'DELL, there is also the grave of Katherine (O'DELL) TORREY, Ida's sister, and "VAUGHT, Claude C. Cpl. U.S. Army WWI Apr 20, 1893 - Oct 30, 1984." Compiler suspected that this might have been the husband of Ida (O'DELL) VAUGHT. Several weeks after the phone call compiler made to Ida in August, 1997, a letter was sent containing a list of questions and Family Group Sheets for Isaac L. O'DELL and his descendents, with a request that Ida might correct, add, delete, etc. where appropriate as she was able. Ida's daughter, Lila E. MILKE responded, saying that her mother was not able to carry on the correspondance, but Lyla would do what she could to help us. Included in Lyla's response was a promise to respond to the questions and also to send "some old pictures" compiler "might find of interest". Compiler indeed did find the information AND the pictures of great interest! One such picture was the first clear photo seen of compiler's great grandmother, Sarah (OVERBY) O'DELL PHELPS! Other pictures included not only Isaac L. and his family, but also compiler's grandparents, uncles and an aunt. Still another very old picture was of a young military officer who is believed to be either William or Hiram CAUDEL--the brothers of Elizabeth (CAUDEL) PHELPS, the mother of compiler's maternal grandmother. Data given in that letter has been invaluable in continuing the family history for Isaac Lacey and his line. Through information sent by Lyla MILKE, many of the incorrect assumptions and inaccurate data compiler had originally entered concerning this family have been corrected. For example, the "Claude VAUGHT" listed in the city directory just above Ida's listing was Claude, Ida's husband. Chester VAUGHT listed there was not Ida's son, but Claude's brother. (Chester VAUGHT died in Feb. 1996) Mrs. MILKE listed the names and birthdates of each of Ida Belle's 5 children; she also corrected her date of birth, and provided the proper spelling of Ida Belle's name. (It is, however, recorded as "Idabelle" on her marriage record.) Compiler had assumed that Ida was one of the two sisters who were not able to get back to Stutsman County in time for their sister's funeral in 1909; Ida and her daughter, in the Nov. 1997 letter, cleared up this misconcept. Ida was only 10 years of age when her sister, "Bam", died. The two sisters who were in CA at the time were Katherine ("Kate") and Dora.

General Notes for Child Lacy Paul (L.P.) O'dell
[bobspu.ged]
BIO: 25 March 1996; Hubert O'DELL's letter to compiler:
"...Now I think that the baby you wrote about was Aunt Alcie's youngest son whose name was Lacy Paul and it runs in my mind that he was about your mother's age, he was one of the youngest soldiers in the first World War. Soon after my mother died in 1924, Lacy Paul came to Indiana for a while. After Aunt Alcie passed away, uncle Ike came to visit dad and they came and spent some time with Harriette and I in 1940 I, or I should have said We, found Uncle Ike a pleasant very likeable person. His family all went to California..."
Compiler found the Isaac and Alcie PHELPS O'DELL family on the 1900 census in Montgomery County, IN. At that time, Alcie reported that she had given birth to 8 children and 7 were still living. Six of these were still living with them in 1900., the youngest being Ida, who was ten months old. Although Hubert O'DELL said that Lacy Paul was about the same age as compiler's mother, it seemed unlikely that he was born that late and still was old enough to have joined the Armed Forces in time to see action in WW-I. Neverthless, compiler made two attempts to locate a draft registration card for Lacy. Both Montgomery County, IN and Stutsman County, ND returned "Not on file" responses. Nov., 1996, compiler found both "William L." and "Lacy" O'DELL listed in SS Death Index records. "William O'DELL, b. 28 Sept 1882" filed for his SS card in IN, and died Feb. 1976, last known address "Santa Rosa, CA." "Lacy O'DELL, b. 10 Aug. 1901" filed for SS card in IL, and died 1980 in Fresno, CA. After a lengthy wait for reponse from the State of California Department of Health Services, compiler finally received a copy of the death certificate for Lacy Paul O'DELL. This document revealed that Lacy was born 10 August 1899, rather than "1901" as recorded by SS Death Index CD. Compiler was prepared to accept the 1899 date, however, Lacy Paul's ("Al P" O'DELL, evidently a nickname) obituary taken from the Jamestown, ND newspaper, states he was born "Aug. 10, 1901." While the obituary does not say where "Al P." was born, the death certificate states that he was born in INDIANA. The county of his birth is not given by either source. The identity of his parents was given on the death certificate as "Isiah Lacy O'DELL" and "Elsie PHELPS," born in TN and KY respectively. At the time of his death, Lacy was married to the former Ann Christine WAHL. He had worked for 20 years as a retail meat salesman for "Foods for Better Living, Inc." His last residence was 1923 E. Cambridge, Fresno, CA. Lacy died at the VA Medical Center, 2615 E. Clinton Ave., Fresno. The immediate cause of death was "Cardio-Respiratory Arrest." Other conditions which contributed to this were "bladder failure" and "metastatic prostatic carcinoma." He had been suffering bladder failure for two days; the prostate cancer had been diagnosed for 17 years. Lacy was buried 07 July 1980 at Fresno Memorial Gardens; Palm Funeral Service was in charge of the services. Just a few days before receipt of the above death record, compiler received another letter from Hubert D. O'DELL. In that letter, Hubert wrote, "...Now about Lacy Paul; He made three trips to Indiana; Once when Mother passed away sometime around 1924 then again in around '32 then about 1939, he was a fiddle foot, he couldn't sit still, he was married with two beautiful girls but some thought the war had something to do with it, he was somewhere around brother Ikes age which would make him about 17 years old; He was a sharp dresser and he was a real good looking man but I suppose some would call him "a bum" but I always had a warm spot in my heart for him..." From the implications of these remarks, compiler suspected that Lacy Paul must have been married twice - once around the 1920s, then after a divorce, he must have married again. However, the obituary, not located until August, 1997, lists survivors as "...his wife, Ann (WAHL) O'DELL, formerly of Eldridge, two daughters and one son, Delores WILLIAMS, Betty PEEL and James O'DELL, all of Fresno; and one sister, Mrs. Claude VAUGHT of Jamestown. (Mrs. VAUGHT would be, Ida O'DELL VAUGHT.) A letter from Mrs. VAUGHT, written for her by her daughter Lyla MILKE, states that Lacy was born in 1901; Ida was born in 1899. She further states that she and Lacy were both born in IN (implied, Montgomery County). Mrs. VAUGHT reports that Lacy was married only once, and that to Ann WAHL, and that the couple had 3 children. Finally, althought the obituary for Lacy Paul O'DELL shows his nickname "Al P.", Mrs. VAUGHT reports that he was sometimes called "L.P." but never "Al P." As of August, 1997, compiler has found no mention of Lacy's military service except the comments of H.D. O'DELL. A search of records listing the graduates of Stutsman County, ND schools, conducted by George L. BARRON, revealed the information that Lacy graduated from the eighth grade at Eldridge, ND in 1915. No mention is made of his graduating from high school.

BIO: Per Obit. Charlotte (STEININGER) O'DELL was 41 yrs. of age at the time of her death. She died in the home of her dau. Mrs. Melvin (Wilma) COIL. Charlotte had been a resident of Tiosa, IN. Her parents moved to Fulton Co. (prob. from South Bend) "when she was a little girl". The family lived in Richland Twp. Survivors listed at the time of her death were: daus. Wilma COIL, Mary June O'DELL both of Mishawaka; a son had preceded Mrs. O'Dell in death; the husband, Frank O'DELL; and four bros.: Irvin STEININGER of Auburn; Herman STEININGER of Rochester; and George STEININGER Ft. Wayne (the 4th bro. is not named, or the name is cut out where the obit. is taped together.) The obituary states that Mrs. O'DELL had been ill for several months. In an interview with Byron GILCHRIST at his home in Indianapolis, June, 1996, Byron, in answer to compiler's questions about the STEININGER family, reported the following-- "George STEININGER was an uncle to Margarett STICHLER's husband, "Bud" STEININGER. Charlotte STEININGER, who married Frank O'DELL was a sister to George. George and Charlotte's mother was a sister to Grandma MOW (Catherine BEEHLER MOW). That sister was Eliza BEEHLER, wife of Howard STEININGER."

General Notes for Child Leonard R. O'dell
[bobspu.ged]
BIO: Leonard was enumerated in his parents' household in 1900 as 13 years of age. His place of birth was unclear. Compiler thinks it was probably "Illinois", but it did have some resemblance to "Indiana." Since his mother was born in IN, it would not be unlikely that one or more of the children might have been born there, too. Leonard did not appear in his parents' household on the 1910 census, and compiler did not find him as head of his own household in that county.

BIO: In her letter answering compiler's questions for her mother, Lyla (VAUGHT) MILKE mentioned James Robert O'DELL several times. She suggested that James Robert might be able to answer many of my questions concerning his own parents and brothers. Mrs. MILKE wrote of James Robert's visits with Ida (O'DELL) VAUGHT, Lyla's mother -- "James Robert O'dell -= address 444 U.S. 98N - 696, Lakeland, FL 33809. (son of Wm. O'DELL...Ida's brother, Wm.) writes he planned to go to McNULTY family reunion in INDIANA in June. He visited Mom in 1989. July - took everyone out to eat on Mom's birthday (age 88) - James robert only living son of Wm. & Daisy O'DELL. Wm had 5 boys." Mrs. MILKE forwarded a copy of a two-page family history written by James Robert O'DELL. Of himself and his immediate family, James Robert "Bob" wrote: James Robert O'DELL was born in 1910 in Dayton, Ohio. Later his family went to Eldridge, N.D., where his father's parents had constructed and operated a general merchandise store. Bob commenced school in a one room building on the prairie west of Eldridge. The family moved from NORTH DAKOTA to INDIANA in 1919. Bob's parents moved many times while living in Montgomery County, Ind., so Bob and others brothers had to attend several different schools. They went to schools in Alamo, Crawfordsville, Waynetown, and Yountsville. Even a few months of grade school were spent in Camargo, Ill. Bob finished high school in INDIANA at Alamo in 1929. That fall he entered Wabash College in Crawfordsville and graduated in spring of 1933. From August 1933 to November 1936 he was employed at R.R. DONNELLY Printing Co. in Crawfordsville. In Nov. he started working as proofreader in Kingsport, Tenn., at the Kingsport Press. He married Nannie Lorena SPRADLINE on July 2, 1937. A son, James Richard, was born June 3, 1938. In latter part of June 1942, Bob left the printing business and went to work at Tennessee Eastman Company across town from the Press. Three years later he and Nan had a baby daughter, Marilyn Alice, born July 4, 1945. Bob worked for Eastman for almost 33 years, retiring May 31, 1975, as a Textile Engineer. During these working years both children completed high school in Kingsport. Both went on through college. James attended Virginia Military Institute (VMI), graduating in 1960, and accepted employment with Ingersoll Rand where he now, 1993, is vice-president of the company. He lives in Mahwah, NJ. He and his wife, SuzAnne SOUTHEE, have four daughters, three of them have completed college. One has Masters Degree in Business Administration. Marilyn O'DELL started collegiate education at Tennessee Polytechnic Institute (TPI) in Cookeville, Tenn. in 1963. There she met and married Jimmie MINCHEY. They have one daughter, Kimberly, who is married to Brad HARVIE. Brad is in the final stage of training to become a Dr. of Physical Therapy. Marilyn attended Peabody Institute in Nashville, Tenn. while her husband completed work for his Masters Degree in Science at a hospital in that city. Marilyn obtained her college degree at University of South Carolina at Columbia, SC. Jimmie and Marilyn are teachers in the FLORIDA school system and live in St. Petersburg, FL. In 1984 Bob and wife Nan purchased a home in an adult park in FLORIDA at Lakeland called FoxWood Lake Estates. In 1985 all their TENNESSEE property was sold and the couple moved to FLORIDA. Nan was very ill at the time. She died in January 1986. Nan and Bob had a very happy marriage for 48-1/2 years. Bob lived alone for the next 4-1/2 years. In 1990, on his 80th birthday, May 7, he and Lillian MAKINEN were married. The wedding was performed at Grace Lutheran Church in Lakeland. All of their children and grandchildren, except one, were present. A graddaughter of Lill's was in college in WISCONSIN and was unable to attend. Bob and Lill reside now in FoxWood Lake Estates, Lot #581, owned by Lill. He sold his home in 1991. Lill takes care of Bob and the house. Bob cares for the lawn and plays golf three days a week. They hope to keep doing this routine into the next century! At the bottom of the page is a handwritten note which reads as follows: "NOTE: This all ended Sept. 14, 1996. Lill died on that date."

BIO: Compiler has made the assumption that this individual was one of the 11 children born to Hannah (WILLIAMS) and Elisha Jordan O'DELL which Hannah reported on the 1900 census. Although there has been no actual documentation found to prove this relationship, John, 39 years of age, was enumerated as head of his own household in "Aleda City", Mercer County, in June, 1900. John was reported to have been born in KY, both of his parents in TN. The only other O'DELLs who would have fit this pattern in Mercer County in the same year were Elisha J. and Hannah or Nathaniel O'DELL, whose first wife, Hannah (LICKLITER), was also born in TN. Nathaniel, however, would only have been about 11 years old when John was born. Although compiler did not find John in the E.J. O'DELL household as a child, the last census record found on this family before 1900 was enumerated in July, 1860, a few months before John's birth. Compiler was unable to find this family in Laurel County, KY in 1870. On the 1900 record, John is reported to be 39 years of age; married to Eva for 16 years. The couple had one child, and Eva reported that she had only given birth to one child. John's occupation in 1900 was recorded as "carpenter." Compiler did not find this family on the 1910 census for Mercer County, IL.

BIO: Per the data appearing on the 1900 census, Eva was born in Illinois; both of her parents were born in MAINE. She and John O'DELL had been married for 16 years; she had given birth to one child, and he was in the home at the time of enumeration. Eva was reported as unable to read, but she could write. The O'DELLs were renting their home in Aleda City at the time of the census enumeration. Compiler was unable to find them on the 1910 census.
