General Notes (Husband)

[bobspu.ged]

BIO: This son of Quillen O'DELL was enumerated as two years old and born in AR on the 1850 census in Prairie Township, Franklin County, AR. Other children may have been born between John W. and his sister Malinda, whose age was given as 9 on that census; if so, they did not survive or were not in the household on either the 1850 or th 1860 census records. Carroll County, ARKANSAS census of 1860 shows John W. as 13 years old. On this census, the wife of "Q.B." O'DELL is listed as "Elizabeth A." rather than "Mary." Her age is 37, very close to what Mary's would have been ten years after she was recorded as "28" in Franklin County. Marjorie WALSH, a descendent of Bartlett O'DELL's, wrote in a letter to compiler, that Mary (AUSMUS) O'DELL died "...in Greenville, AR..."(Franklin County) "...i n the home of one of her children." No year of death was included with that information. If this is true, Quillen evidently married again before Aug., 1860. John's sister, Elizabeth, shown as 10 years of age on the earlier census, was not listed in the household in 1860. She may have married and moved from the home, or she, too, may have died before 1860. Another sister, Malinda, was not enumerated in the O'DELLs' household in 1860, but there is a "James A. CARTER, 28," and wife, "Malinda, 18" enumerated next door to the O'Dells, who compiler believes to be Malinda O'DELL. Mary (AUSMUS) O'DELL may have died in the home of one of the two daughters.

BIO: The marriage listed here for Vicki Jean O'DELL is not confirmed. Compiler has assumed this marriage, based on the comment written by Vicki's father in a response to compiler's request for family data. In his letter to compiler, 13 Nov. 1997, John W. O'DELL wrote, "Vicki Jean O'DELL MONROE - single & living in Henderson, NV. She is an attorney for the District Attorney's Office in Las Vegas." Earlier data recorded by O.L. and Beverly WARREN listed no marriage for Vicki Jean. It is also assumed Vicki is separated or divorced, since her father reported her "single" in his comment. (This marriage, if one existed, would probably have occurred after 1990.)

General Notes (Husband)

[bobspu.ged]

BIO: Compiler has "bent the rules" of reliable research in placing this individual in the family group of Elisha Jordan and Hannah O'DELL. There is no documentation to support this assignment of parents. Joseph H. O'DELL appears on the 1910 census for Mercer County, IL. He gives his place of birth as KY. His age, on the microfilm, is smudged, but it could be either "41" or "47." This could be the son of either Elisha Jordan O'DELL or of Elisha's son, Nathaniel O'DELL. Hannah (WILLIAMS) O'DELL reported in 1900 that she had given birth to 11 children, but not all of them had survived. Nathaniel, her first child, was married in 1868 when he was only about 20 years of age. On the 1860 census, Hannah was 25 years of age. She could have easily been young enough to have had Joseph in 1869. Hannah (LICKLITER), Nathaniel's wife was reported to be 31 years old at the time of her marriage to Nathaniel, her second husband. She, too, could have been the mother of Joseph. In 1910, Mercer County, IL, Joseph H. is shown as the head of his own household in Perryton Township. His wife, Emily, is listed as 40 years of age, born in IL. A 16-year-old son, Glenn, was also born in IL. Under the marital status question, Emily is classifed as married 20 years; Joseph's classification is a bit confusing. It reads "2M, 20 years." Compiler was not clear as to the meaning of the "2 M"--it could mean that Joseph was married twice, or it could mean that Joseph was the second husband of Emily. Although Emily says she was born in IL and Joseph was born in KY, Glenn's "place of birth of father" reads "IL", "place of birth of mother" reads "KY." Compiler assumes this was simply an error on the part of the enumerator in switching the places of birth. Also in Perryton Township, compiler found, in the household of William F. MANNING, a "Susie F. O'DELL, 17, 'Servant', b. IL." Susie's father was born in KY, her mother in IL. Compiler suspects this is a daughter of Joseph H. and Emily O'DELL. Susie's marital status was "Single." It would have been helpful if compiler could have compared 1900 and 1910 census records for Nathaniel's household and Joseph's household. This might have provided answers to some of the questions concerning Joseph's parentage. Unfortunately, compiler did not find Joseph in Mercer County in 1900; although Nathaniel did appear on the 1900 census in the county, his wife was listed as "Eliza O'DELL" and the couple reported that they had been married "0" years. Hannah (LICKLITER) O'DELL's responses to the number of children she had had might have given some clue to whether she was the mother of Joseph O'DELL. Evidently, Hannah had died before 1900 or she and Nathaniel were divorced, and Nathaniel had remarried by that time. Since it is not known when Elisha Jordan and Nathaniel O'DELL left Laurel County, KY, the county of Joseph's birth is uncertain, as well. Compiler did not find either of the two men on the Laurel County census records for 1870, but some church records indicated that E.J. had been in the county later than 1860. Whether the family resided somewhere other than Laurel County before going on to IL is not known.

General Notes for Child Susie F. O'dell

[bobspu.ged]

BIO: There is no confirmation that Susie F. O'DELL is the child of Joseph H. and Emily O'DELL. Compiler has presumed this relationship based on data from the 1910 census. The O'DELLs are enumerated in the same township in Mercer County, IL as the employer of Susie O'DELL. The O'DELLs had been married 20 years at the time of that enumeration. Joseph H. O'DELL was born in KY; his wife, Emily, was born in IL. The O'DELLs listed a son, Glenn, born a year after the calculated year of birth of Susie O'DELL. Susie F. O'DELL is enumerated as "servant" in the household of William F. MANNING in 1910. Her age is given as 17; her place of birth as IL. Susie reported that her mother was born in IL, her father in KY. Since there were no other O'DELLs found on this enumeration which fit these specifications, compiler has deduced that Susie was the daughter of Joseph and Emily.

BIO: August, 1997, compiler made contact with George L. BARRON, a genealogical researcher in Jamestown, ND, who has provided a great deal of data concerning the family of Isaac Lacy and Alcie E. (PHELPS) O'DELL. Among the documents which Mr. BARRON photocopied for this family, was the marriage certificate of Roy TORREY and "Katherine O'DELL." Per this document Roy was residing in Eldridge (Stutsman Co.) ND at the time he applied for license to marry (13 Dec. 1910.) Roy gave his age as 21 as of 15 March 1910; his bride-to-be was reported as 22 years of age. The marriage was solemnized in Jamestown, ND (Stutsman Co.) on the 15th day of December, 1910. Ellen BERQUIST and Clarence ANDERSON stood as witnesses for the couple. The officiating minister was J.G. MORRISON, "Pastor M.E. Church." Catherine (O'DELL) TORREY died in 1914; Roy L. TORREY's burial is listed in "CEMETERIES OF NORTH DAKOTA," with the date of death given only as "1967." Roy was probably of the Catholic Faith, since the notation at the bottom of page 67 from the cemetery index reads, "For Records of the Jamestown Protestant Cemetery write to..." Calvary was, evidently a Catholic Cemetery.

General Notes (Wife)

[bobspu.ged]

BIO: Compiler first found this daughter of the O'DELLs on the 1900 census in Montgomery County, IN. Here she was listed as "Alassy C.", her date of birth was given as "Apr. 1888." When George L. BARRON, Genealogical Researcher from Stutsman County, ND sent a large amount of documentation from that county on this family, this child's name appeared as "Katherine" O'DELL in most sources, but in the article about her father in the NORTH DAKOTA History, she was listed as "Catherine B." The marriage record photocopied for compiler shows the bride as "Katherine", her age as "22" as of Dec. 13, 1910. The ND History makes the statement that Catherine B. "...became the wife of Roy TORY and died at Lakota, North Dakota, in 1915..." The records of graduates from Stutsman County Schools, 1885-1925, lists "Katherine O'DELL, graduate, in 1908 from the 12th grade, Jamestown High School." Photocopies of two pages from the Stutsman County Cemetery Supplement for Highland Home Cemetery cause the most confusion. The first lists, "TORREY, Mary Katherine Apr 8, 1889 - Jan 31, 1924". This is the first indication of the "Mary" part of this individual's name. Also, the months and days of both the birth and the death dates are the same as "Catherine O'DELL's", but the years were not. Compiler sent a request for the year of death to be rechecked and for consideration to be given that these cemetery listings are for the same individual. 22 August 1997, a response from Mr. BARRON in Jamestown, ND, was received with the information that these entries had indeed been misprinted and duplicated for the same person. Upon visiting the grave site of Katherine TORREY, Mr. further confirmed Katherine's year of death as 1914. He made note of the printed error so that they may be corrected in the index. There has been no documentation to support the theory that Irwin TORREY, who served as pallbearer at Isaac L. O'DELL's funeral in 1940, was the son of Katherine and Roy TORREY. This was simply "surmised" by compiler, and was not confirmed. A letter in Nov. 1997, from Lyla (VAUGHT) MILKE, daughter of Ida Belle (O'DELL) VAUGHT, sister to "Kate" (O'DELL) TORREY, stated that "Kate" had only one child with Roy TORREY-- Pearl TORREY, who later married Orvil LUSK. "Torreys lived on a farm outside of Eldridge, ND...Roy TORREY remarried. Don't know how many but know of 4 kids -- Pearl lives in Eugene, OR. Irwin may be stepbrother to Pearl--..." Katherine apparently spent some time in CALIFORNIA prior to her marriage. The obituary for her sister, Flora Alabama, in 1909 states that "Miss Katherine O'DELL, had left Riverside, California to attend the funeral but was unable to reach her home in time." Another item from the Jamestown weekly paper states that, "Two sisters residing at Riverside, Cal., failed to arrive in time to attend." (Flora A.'s funeral).

BIO: "The Colonel" as he was called by his family and friends alike, was best known for his skills as an auctioneer and for his dry sense of humor. Compiler was very young when her immediate family lived in Oklahoma and spent many Sunday afternoons with "Colonel annd Fannie", so memories are more from stories told than from actually knowing "The Colonel". Compiler's father often tried to imitate the auctioneer's cry to demonstrate what Uncle Colonel did, but it was said that very few people could equal the speed with which Colonel performed. "Colonel" was named for his paternal grandfather, but where the "Abner" originated is unknown. When the family returned from Oklahoma about 1914, he remained and later married and made his home on farms in Mayes and Nowata Counties before moving to the town of Nowata. About 1964, compiler, parents and younger brother went to Oklahoma to visit the O'DELL families there. At that time, "The Colonel" had retired but was still very active in the community. He was well-known and respected by all who knew him. Compiler remembers the following incident which illustrates how well people knew him. One day Colonel and Bob (compiler's younger brother) went to town in Colonel's dilapidated pickup truck. Colonel had a tendency to drift right and left as he drove. Bob, being a new driver and sensitive to good driving rules, was concerned that another car might hit them. Finally, he could not hold back and asked, "Uncle Colonel, aren't you afraid that someone might hit you when you're over the line like that?" The Colonel replied with his slow drawl, "Hell, Bob, all these people know me! They're used to seeing me and this old truck on the roads; they just see me coming and get out of the way!" That was a long remembered visit. Unfortunately, just a few years later, the four of us returned to Nowata, but this time for The Colonel's funeral. ************************************************ March, 1996: Family Record Sheets from the Bible of Virginia Margaret PHELPS O'DELL, the "Colonel's" mother, were loaned to compiler by Virginia's youngest son, Hubert D. O'DELL. Among the data on the sheets are two notations of the birth of Lacy A. O'DELL. On one page is the note, "Lacy A Odell Son of WF and Maggie Odell was Bornd July the 26 1890." This appears to be written by a man, probably Frank, his father. Another page which may be from another Bible. lists all of Frank's children. Third on this list is the entry, "Lacy A. O'dell was bornd July 26 1890," then in a darker, perhaps more recent writing, "Laurel Co. Ky." The name and date seem to be in a more feminine hand...compiler suspects it may be the wriing of Virginia Margaret. Individual note: 1. "The William F. & Virginia PHELPS O'DELL Family Tree" by O. L. WARREN. 2. Compiler: Memories and family stories

BIO: Compiler has very few memories of "Aunt Fannie". One family story that has grown up with compiler tells of a Sunday afternoon visit at the O'DELL farm in Nowata County, OK when compiler was very young. It was told that Fannie had made one of her beautiful cakes and had left it on a sun porch until it was to be cut. Compiler had recently visited or had heard talk of the Grand River Dam. When compiler's mother went to carry the cake to be served, she discovered a deep trench had been drawn through it by some small fingers. There was considerable embarrassment to compiler's mother, when her daughter explained the trench as an effort to make "The Grand River Dam" in Aunt Fannie's cake. It was not until the family visited the O'DELL's in OK in the 60's that compiler developed a close relationship with "Aunt Fannie". The first visit, about 1964, established a friendship between us. Then compiler, her parents and brother returned to OK for the funeral of Fannie's husband. Still later, compiler returned several times in the 70's with Sarah Hettie O'DELL WARREN to visit. Sarah had lived on the property some years before. During these visits, we three women enjoyed trips to Muskogee and to Tahlequah, OK to tour the Cherokee reservation and to see "The Trail of Tears" drama there. When compiler married in 1969, "Aunt Fannie" sent, as a wedding gift, a picture that had been one of "the colonel's" favorites. The title of the picture was "The Book Worm"...It showed an elderly man standing on the rung of a ladder, looking intently at an open book that he had pulled from a high shelf in a room lined with many shelves of books. Compiler had seen and admired this picture on the first visit in the 60's and it now hangs on a wall in her home in NC, an ever-present reminder of a very special uncle and aunt. BIO: "Beejean" as she was affectionately called by her "Aunt Lizzie", was a favorite niece of Elizabeth O'DELL GILCHRIST. Although compiler was never around Billie Jean enough to know her well, there were many stories told of her as a child. Billie Jean was extremely caring and loyal to her parents, staying in close contact with them and their needs regardless of where she might be living. Reports from her siblings during her fight with leukemia told of her courage and positive attitude throughout her illness. During remissions, she worked fulltime and stayed busy and upbeat. Per her sister, Helen, Billie Jean never gave up on her struggle against her illness. Helen was with her sister in San Diego at the time of her death. BIO: 25 March 1996; Hubert O'DELL's letter to compiler:

"...Now I think that the baby you wrote about was Aunt Alcie's youngest son whose name was Lacy Paul and it runs in my mind that he was about your mother's age, he was one of the youngest soldiers in the first World War. Soon after my mother died in 1924, Lacy Paul came to Indiana for a while. After Aunt Alcie passed away, uncle Ike came to visit dad and they came and spent some time with Harriette and I in 1940 I, or I should have said We, found Uncle Ike a pleasant very likeable person. His family all went to California..."

Compiler found the Isaac and Alcie PHELPS O'DELL family on the 1900 census in Montgomery County, IN. At that time, Alcie reported that she had given birth to 8 children and 7 were still living. Six of these were still living with them in 1900., the youngest being Ida, who was ten months old. Although Hubert O'DELL said that Lacy Paul was about the same age as compiler's mother, it seemed unlikely that he was born that late and still was old enough to have joined the Armed Forces in time to see action in WW-I. Neverthless, compiler made two attempts to locate a draft registration card for Lacy. Both Montgomery County, IN and Stutsman County, ND returned "Not on file" responses. Nov., 1996, compiler found both "William L." and "Lacy" O'DELL listed in SS Death Index records. "William O'DELL, b. 28 Sept 1882" filed for his SS card in IN, and died Feb. 1976, last known address "Santa Rosa, CA." "Lacy O'DELL, b. 10 Aug. 1901" filed for SS card in IL, and died 1980 in Fresno, CA. After a lengthy wait for reponse from the State of California Department of Health Services, compiler finally received a copy of the death certificate for Lacy Paul O'DELL. This document revealed that Lacy was born 10 August 1899, rather than "1901" as recorded by SS Death Index CD. Compiler was prepared to accept the 1899 date, however, Lacy Paul's ("Al P" O'DELL, evidently a nickname) obituary taken from the Jamestown, ND newspaper, states he was born "Aug. 10, 1901." While the obituary does not say where "Al P." was born, the death certificate states that he was born in INDIANA. The county of his birth is not given by either source. The identity of his parents was given on the death certificate as "Isiah Lacy O'DELL" and "Elsie PHELPS," born in TN and KY respectively. At the time of his death, Lacy was married to the former Ann Christine WAHL. He had worked for 20 years as a retail meat salesman for "Foods for Better Living, Inc." His last residence was 1923 E. Cambridge, Fresno, CA. Lacy died at the VA Medical Center, 2615 E. Clinton Ave., Fresno. The immediate cause of death was "Cardio-Respiratory Arrest." Other conditions which contributed to this were "bladder failure" and "metastatic prostatic carcinoma." He had been suffering bladder failure for two days; the prostate cancer had been diagnosed for 17 years. Lacy was buried 07 July 1980 at Fresno Memorial Gardens; Palm Funeral Service was in charge of the services. Just a few days before receipt of the above death record, compiler received another letter from Hubert D. O'DELL. In that letter, Hubert wrote, "...Now about Lacy Paul; He made three trips to Indiana; Once when Mother passed away sometime around 1924 then again in around '32 then about 1939, he was a fiddle foot, he couldn't sit still, he was married with two beautiful girls but some thought the war had something to do with it, he was somewhere around brother Ikes age which would make him about 17 years old; He was a sharp dresser and he was a real good looking man but I suppose some would call him "a bum" but I always had a warm spot in my heart for him..." From the implications of these remarks, compiler suspected that Lacy Paul must have been married twice - once around the 1920s, then after a divorce, he must have married again. However, the obituary, not located until August, 1997, lists survivors as "...his wife, Ann (WAHL) O'DELL, formerly of Eldridge, two daughters and one son, Delores WILLIAMS, Betty PEEL and James O'DELL, all of Fresno; and one sister, Mrs. Claude VAUGHT of Jamestown. (Mrs. VAUGHT would be, Ida O'DELL VAUGHT.) A letter from Mrs. VAUGHT, written for her by her daughter Lyla MILKE, states that Lacy was born in 1901; Ida was born in 1899. She further states that she and Lacy were both born in IN (implied, Montgomery County). Mrs. VAUGHT reports that Lacy was married only once, and that to Ann WAHL, and that the couple had 3 children. Finally, althought the obituary for Lacy Paul O'DELL shows his nickname "Al P.", Mrs. VAUGHT reports that he was sometimes called "L.P." but never "Al P." As of August, 1997, compiler has found no mention of Lacy's military service except the comments of H.D. O'DELL. A search of records listing the graduates of Stutsman County, ND schools, conducted by George L. BARRON, revealed the information that Lacy graduated from the eighth grade at Eldridge, ND in 1915. No mention is made of his graduating from high school.

General Notes (Husband)

[bobspu.ged]

BIO: Leonard was enumerated in his parents' household in 1900 as 13 years of age. His place of birth was unclear. Compiler thinks it was probably "Illinois", but it did have some resemblance to "Indiana." Since his mother was born in IN, it would not be unlikely that one or more of the children might have been born there, too. Leonard did not appear in his parents' household on the 1910 census, and compiler did not find him as head of his own household in that county.
