General Notes (Husband)

BIO: Russell WARREN was in failing health for many years. Compiler does not remember him being "well". He suffered from some progressive kind of lung problem which was never really diagnosed. There were many extensive tests, medical centers, doctors, etc., but no one was able to name his disease. Asthma, cancer and emphysema were all ruled out. His family had to watch for years as his lungs slowly and painfully ceased to provide him with enough breath. Shortness of breath, coughing, etc., grew worse in spite of efforts to help. In a final effort to find relief, the couple sold their farm and moved west where the climate was drier and usually warmer. They settled in Nowata, OK long enough for their youngest son to finish high school. By the time the son entered the Air Force, they realized there was no help for Russell so they returned to Plymouth, IN, where Sarah cared for Russell as best she could. Russell spent his days making beautiful hooked rugs which they could sell for extra money. Sarah Hettie did babysitting until she could no longer leave Russell alone. Russell worked for a railroad until his illness forced him to retire, so there was some pension from that. He died at 60, but his illness made him seem much older. This couple in their good years provided "a second home" to many of their relatives. Sarah's brother, Red, and his sons spent much time with this family; Sarah's younger sister often found help from the WARRENs when her family was in need. Their home was a place of warmth, welcome, and good food. The 1920 census showed the WARRENs, both 23 years of age, residing in Richland Township, Fulton County, not far from the household of William and Artiemicia GILCHRIST, for whom Sarah worked. Artiemicia was in failing health and was unable to care for her home and the three men who made up her family -- her husband, William, her father-in-law, Thomas GILCHRIST, her youngest son, Byron and her elder son, Virgil, who worked away from home in 1920. Artiemicia died in September of that year. Russell's occupation on this census record was "general farming". Although compiler was under the impression that the WARRENs never owned their own property, the 1920 census shows their home as "owned/Free".

BIO: Obituary from Plymouth, IN Newspaper.
SARAH WARREN WINCHESTER, KY "Sarah Hettie O'Dell Warren, 97, of Winchester Manor died at 6:40 a.m. Friday, April 22, 1994, at Clark Regional Medical Center. She was born Aug. 17, 1896, in Laurel Co., KY, to William Franklin and Margaret (Phelps) O'Dell. She was married to Russell Nelson Warren. She also was a member of the Park Place Methodist Church, Jeffersonville, IN. She is survived by three sons: Charles Warren of Decatur, GA; Walter Warren of Lombard, IL; and Orville Warren of Tulsa, OK. Other survivors include two sisters, Callie Opal Williams of Plymouth and Lillie Houston of Ocala, FL; and one brother, Hubert Delmar O'Dell of Warsaw. Cremation has taken place. Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m Friday at the New Oakhill Chapel in Plymouth with the Rev. John Thrasher officiating. Burial will take place in New Oakhill Cemetery. The VanGilder Funeral Home is in charge of local arrangements". ******************** Family tradition includes a story concerning Sarah's marriage to Russell Warren. Although the couple had made known their plans to marry and although Sarah's mother was making the bride a lovely pink dress for the ceremony, Sarah and Russell chose to be united in an unannounced, private service without informing the family. The bride took her vows wearing the black dress she had put on that morning "to go into town with Russell". When the newlyweds returned to announce their marriage, Sarah's mother, hurt by her daughter's actions, issued a quiet warning to her daughter that she might live to regret "being married in black". Whether this prediction was fortuitous or not, Sarah experienced a great deal of sorrow in her long life. She gave birth to six boys, two of whom died early. Wayne, still a child, died in his mother's arms as his parents were rushing him to a doctor. Bob, a witty, loving, bright youth of 19 was killed in the explosion of his military plane over Walla Walla, Washington just after D-Day of W.W.II. Sarah never had the daughter she was hoping for. For many years, Sarah nursed her ailing husband, and stood by helplessly as his lungs slowly, painfully ceased to function. In a vain hope that a drier climate might help him, the couple sold their farm in northern Indiana and moved west with their youngest son, Orville. When it became apparent that this was not the answer, the couple returned to Plymouth where they lived in a small mobile home until Russell's death. Sarah spent a few years residing first in one son's home, then another's. Finally, she accepted Virgil and Elizabeth Gilchrist's invitation to share their home in Jeffersonville. She stayed with them until cancer claimed both and the home was sold. Perhaps some of Sarah's happiest years were those she spentin a tiny apartment rented from Jeffersonville's Housing Authority. Here Sarah enjoyed the friendship of other senior citizens and was active in Park Place Church. Sarah's last years were spent in Winchester Manor, a nursing home close to her son, Bill, and his wife, Betty in Winchester, KY. Although advanced age and severe arthritis twisted and weakened her body, Sarah's keen mind and sharp memory remained active until just before her death. Sarah Hettie O'DELL WARREN was like a second mother to many younger people. She was adored by her nieces and nephews, but of the many who adopted her, none thought more highly of her than the children of her sister, "Lizzie". She was truly our "second mother" and she is missed. At the time of the 1920 census enumeration, Sarah and Russell were both 23 years of age. Russell's occupation was given as "Farmer." Although compiler was under the impression that they had never owned their own home, this census record shows their home "Owned/Free". At the time of the census, Sarah would probably have been working, at least part time, for the William GILCHRIST family. William's wife, Artiemicia (compiler's grandmother), was in poor health, and in fact, died in September of that year.

m1. Janiece Magee m2. Mary Patricia (Pat) McHugh m3. Unknown (Betty) Warren"
BIO: Bill was one of three WARREN sons who served in World War II. He was granted emergency leave by the Marines to attend the funeral of his brother, Bob, in July, 1994. Because of flight connection problems, he arrived only moments before the service began. He was quite upset, thinking he would be too late. Although there was a period of time that Bill did not stay in close contact with his mother, he eventually did assume most of the burden of seeing to her care in her declining years. Bill and his first wife, Janiece, divorced sometime after the birth of their son, Douglas. Bill moved to KENTUCKY, where he resided from the late 1960s until his death. He and "Pat" McHUGH, his second spouse, had a son who was named for his father. Several years later, Pat and Bill split up, and Bill found his third mate with whom he spent his last years. When his mother's health made it impossible for her to live alone, Bill was the son who assumed responsibility. He and Betty moved Hettie to Winchester, KY, where they were living. For a time, Betty cared for Bill's mother in their mobile home; however Betty was still working so they arranged a place in Winchester Manor, a nearby nursing home. Even after that, Betty and Bill took care of her laundry and other needs, visiting with her often. Bill had two by-pass operations and had suffered some related leg problems after the second surgery. Although limited in activity, he continued to visit and care for his mother on a regular basis. In Feb., 1994, Sarah Hettie developed congestive heart failure; all of her family was called to the hospital in Winchester. She amazed all by improving and later returning to the nursing home. While she was still in the hospital, Bill, who was undoutedly exhausted from the long hours spent at his mother's bedside, was visiting on the porch of one of his neighbors early one morning when he suffered a massive coronary. He was rushed by emergency vehicle to the emergency room, and it was in the E.R. in the hospital where his mother lay recuperating from her own near-death illness that he was pronounced dead just a few hours later.

BIO: There is no confirmation that Susie F. O'DELL is the child of Joseph H. and Emily O'DELL. Compiler has presumed this relationship based on data from the 1910 census. The O'DELLs are enumerated in the same township in Mercer County, IL as the employer of Susie O'DELL. The O'DELLs had been married 20 years at the time of that enumeration. Joseph H. O'DELL was born in KY; his wife, Emily, was born in IL. The O'DELLs listed a son, Glenn, born a year after the calculated year of birth of Susie O'DELL. Susie F. O'DELL is enumerated as "servant" in the household of William F. MANNING in 1910. Her age is given as 17; her place of birth as IL. Susie reported that her mother was born in IL, her father in KY. Since there were no other O'DELLs found on this enumeration which fit these specifications, compiler has deduced that Susie was the daughter of Joseph and Emily.

BIO: The marriage listed here for Vicki Jean O'DELL is not confirmed. Compiler has assumed this marriage, based on the comment written by Vicki's father in a response to compiler's request for family data. In his letter to compiler, 13 Nov. 1997, John W. O'DELL wrote, "Vicki Jean O'DELL MONROE - single & living in Henderson, NV. She is an attorney for the District Attorney's Office in Las Vegas." Earlier data recorded by O.L. and Beverly WARREN listed no marriage for Vicki Jean. It is also assumed Vicki is separated or divorced, since her father reported her "single" in his comment. (This marriage, if one existed, would probably have occurred after 1990.)

O'DELL, youngest son of Virginia Margaret PHELPS O'DELL, loaned compiler some Family Record Sheets taken from his mother's Bible. On the handwritten sheets, the dates of Virginia Ann's birth and death were noted. The birthdate was noted on two different pages; the handwriting appears to be by two different persons. The date of death was on a third page in large and rather ornate writing, but appears to be done by one of the same people who entered the birthdate....compiler suspects it to be a man..perhaps her father, Frank O'DELL. The other birthdate entry is on a full page list of all Frank's children and is in a more feminine -looking hand. (Compiler has even considered that it looks similar to her own mother's handwriting.) BIO: Compiler has taken some liberties in doing some "educated guesswork". Walter was listed as a surviving son of Jonathan in 1916. Walter was living in the Tazewell area at the time. Compiler copied a series of O'DELL tombstones from the library in Tazewell in 1995. Among those copied were Jonathan and Elizabeth KECK O'DELL's. In the same cemetery, compiler found "Walter S. O'DELL and close to his grave "Mellie K. WHEELER O'DELL." Compiler has made the assumption that this is the son of Jonathan and the son's wife. Near these two graves is another for "Alan R. O'DELL, b. 08 JAN 1913-d. 06 JAN 1914." This is probably a child of Walter and Mellie's. The next grave is that of Jonathan, Walter's father. Source: Elizabeth (Ann) Gilchrist-Jun 1998-O'Dell.GED

BIO: Compiler had found the graves of "Mellie" (WHEELER) and Walter S. O'DELL in the same area as other members of the Jonathan O'DELL family, and had made the assumption that this was the son of Jonathan. Then Marjorie WALSH, a desc. of this couple provided family group sheets with much more personal data for each one. Ms. WALSH, however, did not include the place of burial for this couple, and may not know that they were not buried in KENTUCKY. Near the graves of "Mellie" and Walter, there is another which may be a child of this couple... "Allen R. O'DELL; 1913 - 1914."

BIO: Per the "Unrecorded Deeds" found on p 12 of the Laurel Co. Hist. Soc. publication, April 1994, the following deed was discovered in a box in the county court house:
" SASSER to O'DELL " "This indenture made and entered into this March 21, 1881 by and between Wm. H. SASSER ...and John H. ODELL...all of ...Laurel... KENTUCKY....for and in consideration of the sum of Eighty dollars... and sold unto the said John H. ODELL...parcel of land lying and being in Laurel County and State of KENTUCKY on the water of CAIN CREEK and bounded as follows... ___?____WILLIAMS Corner Thence unto the first to the top of the Ridge to a Walnut Corner of Frank ODELL and George PROFITT Thence ...supposed to contain fifty acres more or less... unto the said John H. ODELL his heirs and assigns...attested - Evan JONES Dep. Clk for C W WILLIAMS C.L.C." This deed gives some idea of the location of property owned by Wm. F. "Frank" O'DELL and his first wife, Rachel PHELPS O'DELL. It also indicates that one of the WILLIAMS families lived in the same general area, although the first name evidently was not readable on the deed. Compiler also found a deed indexed for Laurel Co. Deed Book K, page 256: Grantee - W.F. O'DELL Grantor - W.H. SASSER 26 OCT 1882. Deed was not researched at that time, so it is unknown if this is the same parcel of land or a different one. "Frank" O'DELL was the third of four children born to Sarah OVERBEY and Lacey O'DELL prior to Lacey's enrollment in the Union Army. About 3 years after his father's death, Sarah and her children relocated from Claiborne Co., TN to Laurel Co.,KY. In 1874, Sarah married William PHELPS, a widower and the father of Rachel Isabell and Virginia Margaret O'DELL. "Frank" lost his first wife, Rachel Isabell and both of their young daughters in the 1880s. He then married Rachel's younger sister in 1889. Sometime between Oct., 1901 and Oct.,1903, Frank and his family moved to Montgomery County, IN. Then before 1906 they moved again to OKLAHOMA, where three of their children were born before they returned to INDIANA about 1914 and remained there until their deaths. Frank was a staunch Baptist, and delighted in singing "the old gospel hymns" such as "Amazing Grace," which he had learned and had taught in "Shaped-note School" in KY. Compiler remembers little about this grandfather, but among the sketchy memories, there is a mental picture of Frank O'DELL, thick gray hair, heavy mustache, rocking in a large old wooden rocking chair on the porch of his daughter's home outside Argos, IN. As he rocked, Grandpa slapped the old rubber fly swatter on the arm of the chair in rhythm with the mountain-style version of "Amazing Grace" that he was singing; and as he sang every one of the 5 verses from memory, tears trickled from the corners of his ancient brown eyes. -------------------------- April, 1996 compiler received three letters from Frank O'DELL's youngest son, Hubert. In the letter dated 25 March 1996, Hubert wrote the following comments about his father: "...My Dad, and uncle Sam, my brother, drove down to Tennessee to see My dads Cousin one Marshall O'DELL years ago to try to find out something about the O'DELLs but they found out nothing, and they thought they were considered nosing in... ...My Dad, what little 'book larnin' he received, was at a school where the only book there was belonged to the 'master' and his lessons was sung to him and he and the other kids would repeat the same words the teacher would say with the same tune like 'Kaintuckey, Frankfort, on the Kaintuck River.' Of course their pencils were...pieces of slate to write on..." (And concerning his mother's role as "sole parent" in raising the children)"...I don't want you to think my dad was a no good piece of worthlessness, he was a good, Christian, honest hard working man that would do anything for a neighbor. When he left Kentucky he became a fiddle foot who couldn't keep Kentucky out of his memory. So you see, Us O'Dells never had much and never accumulated much but we were raised to believe if your word meant nothing you were poorer than us Hill Billies. My dad made sorghum molasses when we first came to Ind. from Okla..." July 1996: Compiler found a court record from 1891, Laurel Co., KY, wherein "W.F. O'DELL" was appointed guardian for Nancy O'DELL, female, 11 years old, heir of W.F. O'DELL, dec'd...Entered bond..." The Nancy O'DELL mentioned would have been the second child born to Frank and Bell PHELPS O'DELL. Compiler has no idea why this appointment was made; it has been suggested that it might have been the result of an estate settlement after the death of William A. PHELPS. Bell, one of the daughters of Wm. PHELPS, would have inherited a share of his estate. Since she and her daughter, Virginia Ann, both died about the same time as William PHELPS, it could be that her share was passed on to Nancy D. in trust. Since Nancy was only 11 years of age, it is likely that a guardian would have been appointed for that trust.

General Notes for Child Nancy Dorcas O'dell
[bobspu.ged]
BIO: This child of "Frank" and "Belle" O'DELL may have been named for Nancy O'DELL, a spinster aunt of Frank's, who was in their household on the 1880 Census; however Belle also had a paternal aunt named "Nancy PHELPS." The WARRENs do not cite a reference for their data on this first family of Frank O'DELL. The exact date and place of death are not certain. Compiler suspects that much of it was handed down as family lore from Orville's mother, Sarah Hettie O'DELL. Family tradition has it that Frank lived in Laurel County until about 1902, when he moved to Montgomery Co., IN; however, compiler has not been able to find him on the 1900 census in either Laurel Co. or in IN. His son, "Ike" was born in Laurel Co. in 1901, and compiler's mother, Frank's second daughter, was born in Montgomery Co., IN in 1903. Compiler was under the impression that Nancy D. died before the marriage of "Frank" O'DELL and Virginia Margaret PHELPS; however, the date given in the WARREN's work is "1895." March, 1996: Compiler was given the opportunity to copy data from the Family Record Sheets taken from the Bible of Virginia Margaret PHELPS O'DELL. These sheets, owned by Virginia Margaret's son, Hubert, contain notes on the births, marriages and deaths of the Frank O'DELL families. Per these notes, the "D" recorded in the WARREN book as Nancy's middle initial, stands for "Dorcas." (An aunt of "Bell" PHELPS was named "Dorcas.") Nancy's date of death was not recorded. July 1996: A Circuit Court Record (1891) was found in Laurel County which gave W.F. O'DELL guardianship of Nancy D. O'DELL, 11years old. The child was described as female, 11, heir of W.F. O'DELL, dec'd. Compiler has no idea why this should have been necessary. In 1891, Frank, Nancy's natural father would have been married almost 2 years to his second wife, Maggie, Nancy's maternal aunt.

General Notes (Wife)
[bobspu.ged]
10 children: BIO: Compiler knows very little about her Grandmother Virginia Margaret except a few details related to her by A. Elizabeth O'DELL, compiler's mother. From the time of "Lizzie's" birth, Virginia Margaret had a crippled leg. Per "Lizzie," her mother cut the bottom from a cane-bottom chair. By putting her crippled leg on the chair, Virginia Margaret used it like what we now know as a "walker", which enabled her to carry out the tasks of caring for her large family. Compiler particularly remembers stories that portrayed this grandmother as a quiet-spoken, philosophical woman who must have held to considerable mountain superstition. For example, following her eldest daughter's elopement, she, out of great disappointment chided the girl with "hopes that (Hettie) would not live to regret having been married in black." (Virginia Margaret had been in the process of making a pink dress for the bride when they decided to elope). On the day when "Lizzie" mashed her finger between the pump and the pump handle in a fit of temper, Virginia Margaret prophesied that "...(Lizzie) will go to your grave with this reminder of your quick temper..." (And she did!) Virginia lost her own mother soon after she was born; she was raised by her father, her older sister and her stepmother, Sarah OVERBEY O'DELL PHELPS, who was reputed to be "very difficult." Virginia's husband, Sarah's son, was also a demanding and difficult person; her life as his wife and mother to ten children was far from easy. She spent a great amount of time as a "single parent" because of her husband's frequent travel. Pictures of Virginia Margaret in the early 1920s show her as a rather stout woman, whose posture was "tall and erect" (as was her daughter Elizabeth's). She had a rather square face, dark hair and eyes; her long hair was braided and the braids wound around her head. Her two oldest daughters wore their own hair in this same style in their middle years, and showed great resemblance to their mother. There has been argument among compiler and her siblings about our grandmother's "real name." Compiler remembered always hearing Margaret Virginia. Some of the siblings argued for Virginia Margaret. The O'DELL Family Tree Book records her name as Virginia Margaret. When compiler finally re-examined Grandma's tombstone, she had to yield-- the stone reads "Virginia Margaret..." March 1996: Compiler received a letter from Hubert D. O'DELL, Virginia's youngest son. The pages from his mother's Bible which contain handwritten family records show her name as "Maggie V." Apparently she was called "Maggie", but whether the Virginia was a middle name or whether she simply preferred to use her middle name is not known. One of the Family Record pages contains the following notation in what seems to be a man's writing (Frank O'DELL's??): "William F. Odell and Maggie V Phelps was Maried Oct the 27 1889." On another page from the same Bible, in what appears to be the same writing and the same green ink is written, "Maggie Phelps 18?0" (maybe '70) "was Bornd Oct the 19 18?0" ('looks like '90 in one place, then directly under it is another "1890" with lines drawn through it.) ************************ "Maggie" died when her youngest son, "Knute" was about 11 years old. A final note of tribute to her was expressed by "Knute" in his letter to compiler: "I never got to know my mother very well, but I have heard my older brothers say,
no one ever done so much with so little to do with' as my mother in raising us offsprings. She was the power behind the throne." --------------------- April, 1996 -- Another letter from Hubert D. O'DELL to compiler contained the following passages: "My mother had a sister, Alcie, whom she was very fond of and whom I never seen; they corresponded regularly and Aunt Alcie sent my mother a 'setting' of silver laced wyandotte chicken eggs, I guess they were what you would call 'pretty' but as I remember their eggs werent any different than mothers old 'domineckers.'...and my mother came to Indiana to 'take care' of aunt Alcie when she gave birth, my Mother liked Indiana so much that she told my dad that she was going to move 'out of that God Forsaken hole'... My mother and Aunt Alcie were very close and Uncle Ike and my dad were close... ... My Mother could read (and) write, after a fashion, but she was the one that really raised us kids, for instance, according to aunt Hetty, my 2 brothers Sam and Red would send money home during W.W. I and mother used her money the boys sent home and bought a milk cow with it. I dont want you to think my dad was a no good piece of worthlessness, he was a good, Christian, honest hard working man that would do anything for a neighbor. When he left Kentucky he became a fiddle foot who couldnt keep Kentucky out of his memory..." Examination of the 1920 Census for Fulton County, IN showed Virginia M. O'DELL as 49 years of age, born in KENTUCKY. She reported that she was able to read and write, that her father was born in VIRGINIA and her mother in KENTUCKY. At the time of this enumeration, Virginia and her husband had seven children residing in their household - John G., 25, Thomas L., 19, Isaac M., 18, Alcie E., 16, Lillie R., 12, Callie O., 10 and Hubert D., 7. The "BRANCHES OF LAUREL" reference listed below gives the date of marriage for this couple as "10/26/1889", probably the day the application was filed.

General Notes for Child Lacy Abner (Colonel) O'dell
[bobspu.ged]
BIO: "The Colonel" as he was called by his family and friends alike, was best known for his skills as an auctioneer and for his dry sense of humor. Compiler was very young when her immediate family lived in Oklahoma and spent many Sunday afternoons with "Colonel annd Fannie", so memories are more from stories told than from actually knowing "The Colonel". Compiler's father often tried to imitate the auctioneer's cry to demonstrate what Uncle Colonel did, but it was said that very few people could equal the speed with which Colonel performed. "Colonel" was named for his paternal grandfather, but where the "Abner" originated is unknown. When the family returned from Oklahoma about 1914, he remained and later married and made his home on farms in Mayes and Nowata Counties before moving to the town of Nowata. About 1964, compiler, parents and younger brother went to Oklahoma to visit the O'DELL families there. At that time, "The Colonel" had retired but was still very active in the community. He was well-known and respected by all who knew him. Compiler remembers the following incident which illustrates how well people knew him. One day Colonel and Bob (compiler's younger brother) went to town in Colonel's dilapidated pickup truck. Colonel had a tendency to drift right and left as he drove. Bob, being a new driver and sensitive to good driving rules, was concerned that another car might hit them. Finally, he could not hold back and asked, "Uncle Colonel, aren't you afraid that someone might hit you when you're over the line like that?" The Colonel replied with his slow drawl, "Hell, Bob, all these people know me! They're used to seeing me and this old truck on the roads; they just see me coming and get out of the way!" That was a long remembered visit. Unfortunately, just a few years later, the four of us returned to Nowata, but this time for The Colonel's funeral. ************************************************ March, 1996: Family Record Sheets from the Bible of Virginia Margaret PHELPS O'DELL, the "Colonel's" mother, were loaned to compiler by Virginia's youngest son, Hubert D. O'DELL. Among the data on the sheets are two notations of the birth of Lacy A. O'DELL. On one page is the note, "Lacy A Odell Son of WF and Maggie Odell was Bornd July the 26 1890." This appears to be written by a man, probably Frank, his father. Another page which may be from another Bible. lists all of Frank's children. Third on this list is the entry, "Lacy A. O'dell was bornd July 26 1890," then in a darker, perhaps more recent writing, "Laurel Co. Ky." The name and date seem to be in a more feminine hand...compiler suspects it may be the wriing of Virginia Margaret. (Letter to compiler, 13 Jan. 1998)
BIO: "Uncle Sam" had a beautiful tenor singing voice according to family reports. As he aged, his voice was strongly affected by the "palsy-type" of involuntary movement that was visible in his head and hands. Even his speaking voice became shaky and unsteady. Compiler was never told what caused this problem, but apparently there was some hereditary factor, since Sam's younger sister, Callie, exhibits similar symptoms, as did Ike, their brother. Sam seemed to have been more visibly affected by this problem than his siblings, however. (His daughter, Pat, wrote in a letter to compiler, 13 Jan. 1998, "Part of physical problem was Dad's being shell- shocked in WW-I.") Compiler's husband made contact with John, Sam's eldest son, via mail in October, 1997. John responded to the request for additional data, and returned the family group sheets with appropriate corrections as well as additional data on his parents and maternal ancestors. Per John O'DELL, "...As I understand again, my mother and dad met in Colorado when dad was confined to the hospital where mother was working. Dad served in WW I, but mother was never in the service..." (Compiler had stated in earlier biographies that "Aunt Billie" was a registered nurse on active military duty.) Compiler was not sure when the family moved from INDIANA to OHIO, but in her letter (Jan., 1998), their youngest daughter, Pat wrote that the move took place in 1941. They lived for many years in Springfield (Clark Co.) OHIO. After Sam and Billie retired, they moved to Tucson, where they stayed until after Sam's death in 1963. Then "Billie" moved to TEXAS to be with Pat and her family. At the time of Sam's death, his sister, Elizabeth, had never been on an airplane. When she was notified of his death, there was no other way to get there in time for the service. In spite of her fear, she and other family members living in northern Indiana agreed to meet in Chicago and fly together.
************************ March, 1996: Sam's youngest brother, Hubert, loaned compiler the Family History Sheets from his mother's Bible. Two entries were found concerning the date of Sam's birth--on one sheet in green ink, apparently in a man's writing is, "Sammil H Odell was bornd March the 25 1892." On another page, in a more feminine hand is a list of all Frank O'DELL's children; the fourth entry is, "Samuel H. O'dell were Borned March 25 1892." In darker, heavier ink is added "Laurel Co Ky." BIO: "Red" O'DELL, in spite of his frequent use of swear words and almost constant teasing, was loved by his family and highly esteemed by friends and neighbors. He was a "red neck" in many ways but one of the most caring and generous people compiler has ever known. When anyone, family, friends or neighbors, had problems and needed help, "Red" was there. Compiler remembers many stories of members of the extended family being out of work or ill and having food supplied from Red's farm or from groceries he bought and took to them. Still, this man knew trouble of his own. Twin daughters died in infancy and a son also died at birth after 1926. His beloved wife, Sarah, suffered from mental illness and after several years of trying to care for her at home, Red had to raise his two boys alone when Sarah was committed to the Mental Hospital in Logansport,IN. She never returned for more than a short visit. John G. O'DELL died at Woodlawn Hospital in Rochester, IN. His obituary read as follows:
" July 26, 1952: J.G."Red" O'DELL DIES AT WOODLAWN A serious illness of six months duration ended in death at noon Saturday at Woodlawn Hospital for John G. O'Dell, 67, of RFD 3, Argos, where he had resided for a number of years. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Grandview Church in Richland Township, with the Rev. Myron M. Kottke, officiating. Burial will be in South Germany Cemetery. The deceased, a veteran of World War I, had engaged in farming until about two years ago, when he found employment at the Kingsbury Ordance Plant until failing health forced his retirement. He was a member of the LeRoy C. Shelton Post, American Legion. Born July 29, 1894, in Kentucky, he was the son of W.F. and Virginia PHELPS O'DELL. His marriage was in 1919 to Sarah Marshall who survives. Also surviving are two sons: Robert Arthur and Gilbert Leroy of here; five brothers and four sisters: Lacy, Nowata, Okla.; Samuel H., Springfield, Ohio; Thomas L., Plymouth; Isaac M., Nowata, Okla.; Hubert, Sidney, IN; Mrs. Russell Warren, Nowata; Mrs. Virgil Gilchrist, Jeffersonville, IN; Mrs. Lester Houston, South Bend; Mrs. Walter Williams, Plymouth. The body rests at the Foster Funeral Home, to be removed to the church for the service Tuesday".
NOTE: Obituary gives Red's age as "67"; it should have read "57". The personal description of John Gilbert O'DELL taken from his draft registration card: 23 years of age "Medium" height "Stout" body build "Gray" eyes "Red" hair ("bald") NO
(Wilma MOW FOLTZ, a cousin to Sarah MARSHALL O'DELL, wrote the following comments in a letter to compiler, June, 1994). "Red was real good to Sarah's family. He kept Frank and Aunt Lydia like they were his own family...Sarah's brother Frank lived with them and helped with the farming. When they lived on the Brewer place Frank started acting funny---talking to himself and getting mad over nothing. He kept getting worse, he said something to his mother and she laughed and he got real mad. Red talked with the county doctor and they examined him (Frank) and put him in Longcliff, a mental hospital at Logansport. I don't know when he died. We never heard from Roy. We didn't know about Sarah's death till I read it in the newspaper. She was buried the same day...." **************** March, 1996: Hubert H. O'DELL, Red's youngest brother, loaned compiler the Family Record Sheets from his mother's Bible. Recorded on two of the sheets were the following: (In what seems to be a man's writing in green ink--perhaps Frank, his father) "John j Odell was Borned July th1 29 1894." The fifth child entered on a list of all Frank's children on a different page and (apparently in a female's writing--Maggies' ?) "John G. O'dell were Borned July 29 1894" Beside that entry in darker ink is written "Laurel Co. Ky." The 1920 census shows "Red" enumerated in his parents' household. His age is given as "25", occupation "general labor." This enumeration was taken 02 January 1920, just five months before "Red" married Sarah MARSHALL. General Notes for Child Sarah Hettie O'dell

William's wife, Artiemicia (compiler's grandmother), was in poor health, and in fact, died in September of that year.

m1. Ethel May Bell m2. Laura Ruth Markley
BIO: Tom O'DELL operated the Shell Oil Station across the street from his home in Plymouth for as long as compiler can remember. In later years whenever the family gathered, we usually met at Uncle Tom's. There was a swing on the front porch that was seldom empty when the weather was warm and Aunt Laura nearly always had some pie or cake baked when we arrived. Compiler's last memory of Uncle Tom was the day of funeral services for Walter WILLIAMS, Sr. in 1982. Tom had been in failing health for quite some time and was not able to attend the services. On the way from the church to the cemetery, the procession drove past Tom's house. There was Tom, sitting on his front porch watching for the procession to pass. ************************ March, 1996: Tom's youngest brother, Hubert, loaned compiler the Family Record Sheets from their mother's Bible to document the family's data. On a page listing all of Frank's children, the seventh entry reads, "Thomas Leroy O'dell were bornd February 27 1900,"...in darker ink is added, "Laurel Co Ky." The 1920 census shows Tom still living in his parents' household. He was listed as 19 years of age, occupation "general labor."

General Notes for Child Isaac Mckinley (Ike) O'dell
[bobspu.ged]
BIO: Ike O'DELL or "Ikey", as his sister "Lizzie" used to call him, was the last of Frank O'DELL's children to be born in Laurel Co., KY. The family left KENTUCKY and relocated in Montgomery Co., IN when Ike was about 2 years old. He moved with them again about 1906 to northeast OKLAHOMA. T he family returned to INDIANA after 1912, but Ike later went back to OKLAHOMA where he married Ruby and settled in Nowata Co. Ike and Ruby were very active in the Church of God in Nowata. He worked for the City and was well-known and highly respected in the community. Ike had an unhurried, "laid back" demeanor, and he talked in a slow drawl. This combined with his dry wit impressed his niece Wilma GILCHRIST greatly. One of Wilma's oft told stories was of a vacation she and a friend spent in Nowata with the O'DELL's. Evidently a floor lamp had quit working, and Ruby had asked Ike several times to fix it. One evening, Ruby got impatient and asked,"Ike, when are you going to fix that lamp?" His response, per Wilma's report, was to not even use the energy to look at his wife, but, with head resting on the back of a chair, he drawled, "Oh, when the spirit moves me, I guess...anybody got a plug?" Ike was ill for quite some time with cancer. His daughter, Edra, was living in the Dallas area and arranged for medical care there. Ike and Ruby made many trips to Dallas throughout his illness. He died in Dallas with his family around him. ************************ March, 1996: Hubert O'DELL, brother of Ike, has allowed compiler the use of some Family Record Sheets taken from their mother's Bible. On a list of all of Frank's children, Ike's birth is recorded: "Isaac Mc. O'DELL was Borned Oct. 15 1901," then in darker ink has been added, "Laurel Co Ky." The 1920 census shows "Ike" as 18 years of age, still living in the household of his parents. His occupation is given as "general labor."

General Notes for Child Alcie Elizabeth O'dell
[bobspu.ged]
BIO: Elizabeth O'DELL was the first of her parent's children to be born outside of Laurel Co., KY. Her parents, five older brothers, and older sister, Sarah Hettie, had migrated to Indiana, following the example of her uncle, John Henry or "Uncle Bud" as he was called. Although she never lived in KY or TN, the family's strong mountain background greatly influenced "Lizzie's growing up. The family seldom lived more than a year in the same house. "Frank O'DELL" was not eager to put down roots in any one spot after he left KY. He traveled to various parts of the country teaching music by "shaped notes", leaving his wife and family for weeks at a time. Before spending the last 30-35 years of his life in Marshall and Fulton Counties in Northern Indiana, Frank took his growing family to Craig and Delaware Counties in Oklahoma where Elizabeth's 3 youngest siblings were born. One of these, a twin to her youngest sister, died as a baby and was buried in Craig Co. In spite of her keen mind, her love of learning, and an avid interest in poetry and literature, Elizabeth was forced to end her formal education at the sixth grade level to help her crippled mother with the housekeeping and care for the large family after her eldest sister took work outside the home. After her mother's death in 1924, Elizabeth worked at a local radiator factory in Marshall Co.,IN. While employed there, she suffered heat exhaustion which caused her to be extremely sensitive to very warm temperatures for the rest of her life. Elizabeth's early experience with hard work and housekeeping was valuable to her in raising her own large family. Frequently, Virgil would have to work away from home during the week, returning only on weekends to relieve his wife from responsibility for the care of the animals and the garden. Elizabeth was described by her husband as a "good-looking young lady" at the time of their marriage. "She was tall (5'10") and thin (about 135 lb) and walked like a queen." Virgil once told this compiler, "You would be very lucky to be half as attractive as your mother was when she was 25 years old!" Elizabeth maintained her erect posture until illness bent her shoulders beneath the pain of cancer. After the birth of her youngest child in 1946, Elizabeth lost control of her weight which increased to well over 200 lb. and her height decreased by 1". Still, Elizabeth never left home without lacing herself into her boned corset, and when "dressed up", was a tall and proud-looking woman. Probably because of her mountain heritage, Elizabeth was not openly affectionate. Her philosophy was, "If you love me, act like it: don't tell me!" To her this meant deeds of love, not open expressions of affection. She appeared to be stern and demanding, and had a tendency to intimidate most people...especially her daughters' beaus and later their husbands. Her reddish-brown hair, snapping brown eyes, and Irish temperment contributed to this image; however, she had a keen wit and was well liked by the people in the community. She loved music and had a strong, but untrained soprano voice. Her repertoire of traditional hymns and mountain folk songs was extensive; few of her chores could be done without singing. Unlike her husband, she was not confident enough to perform for an audience, but her strong voice was missed in church if she were absent. Although three occurrences of cancer took toll on her body over a period of ten years, she did not submit to its effects until after Virgil died in April, 1971. Eleven months later, she went to join him. The medical cause of death was "invasive cancer", but her family knew that grief contributed greatly.

The source is unknown.
SAFELY HOME I am home in Heaven, dear ones; All's so happy, all's so bright! There's perfect joy and beauty In this everlasting light.
All the pain and grief are over, Every restless tossing passed; I am now at peace forever, Safely home in Heaven at last.
Did you wonder I so calmly Trod the Valley of the Shade? Oh! but Jesus' love illumined Every dark and fearful glade.
And He came Himself to meet me In that way so hard to tread; And with Jesus' arm to lean on, Could I have one doubt or dread?
Then you must not grieve so sorely, For I love you dearly still' Try to look beyond earth's shadows, Pray to trust our Father's will.
There is work still waiting for you, So you must not idle stand; Do your work while life remaineth-- You shall rest in Jesus' land.
When that work is all complete, He will gently call you home; Oh, the rapture of the meeting! Oh, the joy to see you come!
----------------------------------------------------------- [The following is a letter Elizabeth wrote to compiler February 14, 1961. Compiler was in her senior year of college, at Central Institute for the Deaf/Washington University, St. Louis, MO. and had been offered a summer tutoring position by the U.S. Ambassador to Bermuda, whose son attended CID during the school year.]
"Dear Ann. It is a busy day for me so I'm..."(written at the top of a verse printed inside a "Thinking of You" greeting card. the verse read, "Taking just a moment to send a card your way-- To say, 'Hello! how are you?' I'm thinking of you today!") "No the truth is Im out of envelopes so this was the best I could do this A.M. I really Do have another busy day though I'm doing Claudia's washing. I did mine and Wilma's yesterday. Wilma is having back trouble again. I ironed for her Sat. and wash & iron for her this week. Well washing's all done again now I must get at the ironing. It is almost lunch time now though. Your Father & Brother (Jim) think you should go to Bermuda. I say its your problem to answer for it's you that will or won't be happy. The only thing I can say is, and I don't know how to say it without you taking the wrong meaning. But here it is. We are "flat" broke or will be when we pay taxes. Our taxes came as quite surprise they are about $900.00. We have enough to pay them and by really skimping and saving Dad can take SMALL jobs 'till we get caught up again. I'm not telling you this to cause you to worry but to let you know we are not going to be able to give you much money. I hope we can figure out some way for your spring clothes for graduation and we may hit a streak of good luck for a change. Dad says he refuses to worry for God has taken pretty good care of all of us and he will continue to do so. We really aren't worrying about it. I don't understand MYSELF. but I'm not worried. Now don't say anything about this Dad didn't want any of the kids to know, but of course Bob Deen had to know, he figured the taxes. And Claudia told Jean and she told Jim so that just leaves Wilma not knowing. He just don't want the kids worring about us. We are in no means suffering. it's just keeping him from bidding jobs of any size. Today is a beutiful day so was yesterday. I just hope it lasts. It was good to talk to you Sat. You are almost as bad about writing as I anymore. Jean has a Valentine party at school this afternoon and I think Gladys Killebrew is down there. Well I must fix Dad some lunch and get this in the box. Write soon. Lots of love. Mom."
________________________________________________________________ Elizabeth added the following to Virgil's letter to compiler on 3 MAR 1961
"Aren't you surprised? I was when he told me he had written this. He has gone to take Bob to church (M.Y.F.). Just talked to Jean she is going back on Mrs. Wheeler's case again tonite. I think I told you about her falling down the church steps at Wall Street. Jean took her case from 11-7 the first week then gave it to Doris Maloney. Margaret Collet has the 7-3. Her boy is an officer for Silver Creek Ball Team so she wanted to see them play yesterday. Jean worked for her. Both Mr. and Mrs. Wheeler talked her into coming back 11-7. She says she will try again for awhile. She is so afraid she will neglect her family. I will wash for her tomorrow. It seems Dad has told you all there is to tell so I will just say. We miss you and will be glad when you are home again. Love Mom" ******************** March, 1996: Hubert O'DELL, youngest brother of Elizabeth's, has loaned compiler some Family Record Sheets from his mother's Bible. Listed ninth on a page with all Frank's children is the entry: "Alcie E. O'dell were Bornd Oct. 25 1903." In a darker ink has been added, "Darlington, Ind." (This is the first time compiler has heard the name of the town of her mother's birth. The only location known until now was "Montgomery County, near Crawfordsville.")

General Notes for Child Hubert Delmar (Knute) O'dell
[bobspu.ged]
BIO: This younger brother of A. Elizabeth O'DELL GILCHRIST has held a very special place with the entire GILCHRIST family, as have his wife and three daughters. Although the families, since W.W. II, have been many miles apart, the GILCHRIST family has considered "Knute" and his family an extension of their own -- "Uncle Knute and Aunt Harriette" seemed to "have grown up" with their nieces and nephews. During W.W. II, "Knute" was stationed with the U.S. Navy in the Philippine Islands for a rather long term. At the time he was shipped out for the Islands, Harriette was a new mother to the O'DELL's first daughter, "Judy." At that time, Virgil and Elizabeth GILCHRIST had moved into a home located very near the Quartermaster Depot in Jeffersonville, IN. Because military supplies, clothing ,etc. were manufactured, stockpiled and shipped all over the world from that Quartermaster, jobs for "war wives" were plentiful. As a young wife and mother, struggling to earn a living and to do her part in the war effort while awaiting the return of her husband from active duty, Harriette lived with the GILCHRISTs and worked at the "Government Depot," as it was called by most "locals." She was for many months, like "an older daughter" to Virgil and Elizabeth. Judy, an adorable, cheerful little girl was the apple of her "Uncle Virgil's" eye! After "Knute's" return from the War, the families stayed in close contact. "Knute" and his family moved back to Kosciusko County living in or near North Manchester, then Sidney, then Pierceton, Warsaw and surrounding areas. When Harriette was due to give birth to their second child in 1948 "Aunt Lizzie" went to stay and take care of the new baby and mother. At that time, Bob GILCHRIST was only a toddler, so he went with her to the O'DELL's. By this time, Judy had learned to fight for her claim to "sole attention" of the adults in the family. This two-year-old, male intruder was in for some stiff competition! "Aunt Lizzie" had quite a challenge to keep these two youngsters on "peaceful terms" while she cared for the rest of the young family! As is normal, the two families grew less involved with each other as they became more involved with the activities of their own homes and families. Still, there were visits back and forth once or twice each year for many years. Compiler remembers "Uncle Knute" as a pleasant, soft-spoken family man, who seemed to never lose his temper or raise his voice with his own daughters. There are several memories of childhood "pranks" shared by compiler and Judy, which, when discovered by our parents, required some form of chastisement. Compiler can remember watching "Uncle Knute" use his quiet, calm reasoning manner with his daughter...always explaining "why this was not a good thing to do, and what we would have to do to help 'us' to remember to NOT repeat this unacceptable action", etc. Compiler's own father, while always loving and fair, did not use such "silky-voiced reasoning" with HIS little girl! His was a more direct, concise, "DON'T do that again!" (Reasons "why not" were seldom offered, and when asked, the reply was most usually, "Because I said so!" In most cases, the questions were not repeated!) "Knute" inherited a nice tenor voice, and has always loved to sing "the old songs" mostly of a religious nature. A staunch Baptist, he also enjoyed "discussions" of religious philosophy, and used every opportunity to try to "convince" his nephew, Jim, of the truth contained in his Baptist doctrine! In March, 1995, both "Knute" and Harriette were hospitalized at the same time --"Knute" with pneumonia; Harriette with complications connected with her heart condition. During this time, Jim and his sister Jean (GILCHRIST) drove to Warsaw to visit the couple. By the time they arrived, both patients had returned home, but the doctors had informed the O'DELL family that it was strictly "a matter of time" for Harriette. "Knute," suffering from emphysema himself, and using oxygen as needed, was understandably fragile, too. Jean and Jim spent several hours with the family, and then returned to report to the rest of the family that while they were there, "Knute" sat, holding Harriette's hand, singing hymns that she liked. During their visit, Harriette, able to barely lift her head would sit, slumped and semi-conscious beside her husband, listening as he sang. Knute would stop singing, assuming that she was asleep. Then when he attempted to join into conversation with their visitors, his wife would struggle to raise her head and demand, "Sing! Sing, Knute!" Patiently, "Knute" would resume his song as though he had never paused. NOTE: 17 May 1995- Jim telephoned compiler and reported that again Harriette has been critically ill with pneumonia. After some hours in coma, she has rallied somewhat, but also, Kathleen reported that her mother is near death. And Jim visualizes "Knute" beside her, holding her hand and singing "How Great Thou Art" or "Amazing Grace." NOTE: Harriette passed away 14 JUN 1995. *********************** March, 1996: Hubert O'DELL contacted compiler in response to an earlier letter asking if he would like a copy of compiler's O'DELL History, "OODLES AND OODLES OF ODLES." After having seen his sister's copy of the book, "Knute" mailed the family record sheets from his mother's Bible to compiler to use for documentation. These old sheets contain the handwritten entries of births and some deaths of the children of Frank O'DELL. They also record the marriages of Frank and Bell (PHELPS) and later of Frank to Bell's sister, "Maggie", Hubert's mother. Appearing on the last lines of the page of births of the O'DELL children is the following: "Hubert Delmar was Borned at Berniece, Okla...April 6 1912." ************************** "Knutes'" mother, "Maggie" died when he was about 11 years old. A final tribute to her was expressed in his letter to compiler --
"I never got to know my mother very well, but I have heard my older brothers say no one ever done so much with so little to do with' as my mother in raising us offsprings. She was the power behind the throne." ***************************
Compiler wishes to enter here an acknowledgement and a note of sincere appreciation to "Uncle Knute" for sharing those precious pages to help in the recording of the O'DELL family's history. As he ended his letter to compiler, so compiler now closes this entry to the O'DELL story...
Uncle Knute, "God loves you, and so do we." *****************************
At 2:00 a.m. on Friday, 13 June 1997, in a Warsaw, IN nursing home, where he had been sent from the hospital just a few days before, Hubert D. O'DELL left this life to join his beloved wife, his parents and others who'd gone before him. The wish he had expressed so often in the last months of his illness had finally been granted. Hubert had, only a few months earlier, left explicit instructions with his daughter, Kathleen, concerning his funeral service. One of his most adamant demands was that "Amazing Grace" be played "on the pipes." About two weeks before his death, compiler mailed to Uncle Knute and Kathleen, an audio tape, purchased in a SCOTTISH shop in Highlands, NC, the title of which was "The Amazing Amazing Grace." On that tape, one of six renditions of the old hymn was played by Scottish bag pipers. Although he probably was too ill and his hearing too deteriorated to listen to the tape when it arrived, compiler sees in her mind's eye, "Knute" enjoying the piping of "Amazing Grace" by a far more talented piper than that on the tape she sent!
There is no doubt, Uncle Knute, God does love you, and so do the ones of us whose lives you touched while you were here. Enjoy your reunion, and, along with your Dad, my Dad, your sister "Lizzie" and all the others whose voices stay in our memories, sing the old songs as they've never been sung before.

General Notes (Husband)
[bobspu.ged]
BIO: Compiler has again assumed a relationship for William H. O'DELL as son of Nathaniel O'DELL and Hannah (LICKLITER) GUTHERIE. Again, there is no documentation to prove this as of 22 April 1997. And, again, William H. O'DELL could have been the son of either Nathaniel or of Nathaniel's parents, Elisha Jordan and Hannah (WILLIAMS) O'DELL. Since Hannah had reported in 1900 that she had given birth to 11 children, William H. may have been one of them. William H. reported in 1910 that his mother was born in KY; in 1900, however, both of his parents were reported to have been born in TN. Hannah (WILLIAMS), wife of Elisha Jordan O'DELL, and Hannah (LICKLITER) O'DELL, wife of Nathaniel, were both reported to have been born in TENNESSEE. William H. O'DELL was enumerated as head of the household immediately after that of Elisha Jordan O'DELL, thought to be his paternal grandfather, in Mercer Co., IL in 1900. Nathaniel was also residing in Mercer County at that time, but he was enumerated in his own household with wife, Eliza, who reported that the couple was married but the "number of years married" was recorded as "0". Evidently Hannah (LICKLITER GUTHREY), died before 1900 or the couple had divorced, and Nathaniel had remarried. To add some support to compiler's theory, the 1910 Mercer County census shows Eliza O'DELL widowed and enumerated in the household of William H. and Nancy J. O'DELL. Her "relationship to the head of the household" is given as "Mother." It is strongly suspected that Nathaniel died between 1900 and 1910, and that William took his stepmother into his home. From information appearing on the census record concerning William's wife and children, it would seem that he had spent some time in IOWA prior to his residence in IL. William's wife, Nancy J., gives IOWA as her own birthplace, and two of the children appearing on the 1900 census were born in IOWA. In 1910, Beatrice, a daughter enumerated in the household in 1900, is not listed, but Alvin, the son, was also born in IOWA. In 1910, there is another daugher, Eva U., nine years of age, whose place of birth is "Illinois." From this data, it is likely that William and Nancy were married in IOWA, and moved to IL between July, 1893 (when Alvin was born) and June, 1900.

General Notes (Wife)
[bobspu.ged]
BIO: Nancy J. appears on the 1900 and 1910 census records for Mercer County, IL, as the wife of William H. O'DELL. Data given for Nancy and her children on this record indicates that Nancy and William were probably married in IOWA. They had been married 11 years in 1900, 21 years in 1920, and two of the three children shown in their household were born in IOWA. The third, Eva U., born about 1901, was born in IL, probably Mercer County. Nancy's maiden name is unknown, as of 22 April 1997, but she reported that her father was born in GERMANY, her mother, in MAINE. Nancy was born in IOWA in 1871.

General Notes for Child Beatrice O'dell

BIO: The given name, the age and the year of this child's birth were very difficult to read on the microfilm for Mercer County's 1900 census. She did not appear on the census in 1910 in her parents' household. Since her age did appear to be "10" in 1900, she may have been married and gone from the home by the next enumeration.

General Notes for Child Alvin L. O'dell
[bobspu.ged]
BIO: Alvin L., son of William H. and Nancy J. O'DELL, was born in his mother's home state, IOWA. This is probably a strong clue that his parents were married there, as well. The family evidently moved from IOWA to IL between Alvin's birth, July, 1893 and 26 June 1900, when the census enumeration was taken.

General Notes for Child Eva U. O'dell
[bobspu.ged]
BIO: Eva was the only one of the three children of William H. and Nancy J. O'DELL enumerated in 1910 who was born in IL. Her sister and brother were both reported to have been born in IOWA, where her mother was born, and probably where her parents married. The family was enumerated in Mercer County, IL in 1900, but Eva was apparently born after that census count. Eva's age was given as "9" on the 1910 record.
