BIO: William Lacy O'DELL was evidently the last of 8 known children born to Bartlett H. and Elizabeth (QUILLEN) O'DELL. Names and ages of William's siblings were originally provided by William J. HEINLE, a descendent of William O'DELL's sister, Mary Pauline LAY. Birthdates have been calculated as closely as possible from census records from 1850 except where more recent data is available. Comments of witnesses in William's Civil War Pension File indicate that William and his future wife, Sarah OVERBEY had been acquainted, and were possibly neighbors as children. Ages, calculated from census records, indicate that the couple was married very early. William would have been only 18; Sarah was somewhat older than her husband. The couple evidently left Claiborne Co., and spent a brief time in Laurel Co., KY, where their 2nd child, John Henry, was born in 1857. Data found in Laurel Co. shows that William's older brother, Jordan, and his wife, Hannah, had moved to Laurel Co. by 1856. It is likely that William and Sarah were visiting with or had gone there with Jordan and Hannah O'DELL. By 1859, William and Sarah were again residing in Claiborne Co. and seemingly remained there until William entered the Union Army. There is some question as to the precise date of William's mustering in, but one document states that he "enrolled NOV 18/61 at Camp Calvert, KY to serve 3 years..." William was assigned to Company E, of the 2nd Regiment of the Tennessee Volunteer Infantry. "Private William L. ODLE" died near Camp Cumberland Ford in Knox Co., KY on 18 MAR 1862. He was one of the many young soldiers who died of Typhoid Fever within just a few months of beginning military service. It is of some interest to note that William's brother, Marshall L. O'DELL, enlisted in the U.S. Army at Camp "Cumberlandford" only twelve days before William died. This may indicate that Marshall had gone there, knowing that his younger brother was gravely ill, and that he was present or in the general vicinity at the time of William's death. It is not known, as of JAN 1995, if William's remains were re- turned to the family in Claiborne Co., or if he was buried near the military camp in Knox Co. No record has been found, as of Feb. 1997, for his burial. Although his youngest son was only 14 months of age when William died, his name was carried on through the next two generations. William's youngest son, Isaac Lacey, named his first son "William Lacey". William's second son, William Franklin, born in 1859 also honored his father's memory by naming his first son "Lacy Abner O'DELL". Compiler has documents which show three different dates for the marriage of "Lacy" and Sarah Ann OVERBEY. An affidavit signed by the minister who married the couple, William WILLIAMS, as well as a statement signed by the Clerk of the Claiborne Co. Courts states that the record had been lost, that there was an error in recording Sarah's middle name and that the marriage was "solemnized" on 15 August 1854. One marriage index at the Claiborne Co. Library shows 22 August 1854; another shows 28 August of that year. *********************** March, 1996: Hubert D. O'DELL, grandson of William Lacy, loaned compiler the Family Record Sheets from his mother's Bible. On these sheets, Virginia Margaret (PHELPS), the wife of Frank O'DELL, had spelled her son's name as "Lacy." This child was apparently named for his grandfather, so this may be an indication of the family's traditional spelling of the name. Records concerning William L. O'DELL vary; some spell his name "Lacey" and others "Lacy." ************************ 23 Sept. 1997, compiler's husband found the following information on a computer internet genealogy site: 2nd Tennessee Volunteer Infantry Regiment ODELL, William L.: Private; E; Unk; 21; 18 Nov 1861 - 18 Mar 1862. Non-combat death. Died 18 Mar 1862 at Cumberland Ford KY. Cause of death disease.

General Notes (Wife)
[bobspu.ged]
m1. William Lacey O'Dell m2. William A. Phelps
Source: Notes re: William A. Phelps BIO: All reference sources agree that Sarah OVERBEY was born in Virginia. Her son's marriage record in Book H, Laurel Co., KY, specifies Halifax Co., VA. Data sent to compiler by Connie HERRING, citing the book written by Paul OVERBEY, reports that she was born in 1831 in Mecklenburg, rather than Halifax County, VA. "Sally" was enumerated in the home of Henry and Sylvaney OVERBEY, Claiborne Co., TN Census, 1850. Henry OVERBEY's name appears in the Civil War Pension File as a witness for the widowed Sarah, but his relationship is not stated. Sarah's mother's name appears as "Sylvania," "Sylvia" and "Sylvaney", depending upon the document reviewed. Sarah's C.W. file states that "Sylvana" testifies that she was present at the births of each of Sarah's children, but it does not state that she is the mother of Sarah (OVERBEY) O'DELL. Finally in September, 1997, compiler received evidence via Ms. HERRING, that confirms Sarah as the child of Henry and Sylvania OVERBEY. Trusting the 1850-1880 census data as to names, ages and birth- places is questionable. Apparently, neither of Sarah's parents could read or write. It would appear, however, that the family moved from VA to NC about 1835, although they may have returned to VA before moving to Claiborne Co., TN prior to Sarah's marriage to William Lacey O'DELL in 1854. The data from Paul L. OVERBAY's book supports compiler's assumptions. The following is an excerpt from an e-mail letter to compiler from Ms. HERRING, 30 Aug. 1997: According to the book, Henry & Sylvania lived for a time in North Carolina, probably in Granville Co., which is just south of Halifax Co and where some of the OVERBY land was located ... They were back in Virginia, Mecklenburg or Halifax, when Smith was born in 1834. Tax lists indicate they lived in Stokes County, NC, from 1836 to 1840 and were listed there in the 1840 Census. Three children were born there: Herod, John Calvin, and Christina. The next two ...were born in Virginia...possibly Smyth Co. A Henry OVERBEY bought land there in 1846 and deeded it back to the seller in 1856, after moving to Tennessee. The census of 1850 found the family in Claiborne Co., TN ... Around 1865 they moved to Laurel Co., KY, living there until their deaths in the 1880s...
Sarah gives her age as of 22 AUG 1863, when she filed for widow's/ minor child's pension as "34". Calculation indicates a birthdate in 1829; this is one of four possibilities. There is also some conflict on the exact date of Sarah's marriage to "Lacy" O'DELL. Documents in the C.W. Pension File give the date as 15 August 1854; one marriage index in the library at Tazewell, TN gives the date as 22 August 1854, the other says 28 August of that year. Apparently William and Sarah left Claiborne Co., TN for a brief period near the time of the birth of their second child, John Henry, who was born in Laurel Co., KY in 1857. They returned to Claiborne County, TN where the last two children, William and Isaac Lacey, were born in 1859 and 1861, respectively. Isaac, the youngest, was thought to be about 14 months old when his father died in a Union military camp in March, 1862. (Two statements in Sarah's Widow's Pension File say that Isaac was two months old when his father died.) About 1865, Sarah returned with her 4 children to Laurel Co., KY. She resided near Laurel Bridge, KY until her marriage to William A. PHELPS in 1874. After the marriage, the family lived in the Bush area (Bush's Store P.O.) near London, KY. In 1875, William PHELPS made application and was given guardianship of Sarah's two children who were still under 16. This helped Sarah in her attempts to obtain the minor-children's Civil War pension. After PHELP'S death Sarah applied again and was granted her widow's pension from William O'DELL's military service. In 1888, she and Nancy O'DELL, Lacey's sister, testified on behalf of Sylvania OVERBEY as she applied for widow's Pension after Henry's OVERBEY's death. At that time, Sarah gave her age as "53". The statement is made that both Nancy and Sarah have known the OVERBY's "since 1850". This would seem to negate Sarah's relationship to Sylvania but compiler suspects the statement was made from Nancy's viewpoint and did not consider Sarah's relationship to the couple. The "Pensioner Dropped" document found in O'DELL's Civil War File gives Sarah OVERBY O'DELL's date of death as "MAR___1905." The place of death was not given in that document. A great grandson wrote in his unpublished family history, that Sarah died in southern INDIANA. The correct place of death and the place of burial are not known by compiler as of Jan. 1995. Her last recorded address with the Federal Pension Bureau was Laurel Bridge, Laurel County, KY. Sarah was found as a "boarder" in the home of Will Henry and Hannah JOHNSON on the 1900 census. Will Henry was a brother to to Sarah's daughter- in-law, Mary (JOHNSON) O'DELL, wife of John Henry "Bud." By 1910, at least three of Sarah's children had moved to IN, first to Montgomery County, near Crawfordsville. It is possible that Sarah was with one of the families at the time of her death, however, compiler has been unsuccessful in finding any record of her death in Montgomery, Vigo, or Fulton Counties in IN or in Laurel County, KY. No burial site has been found for her.

General Notes for Child Elizabeth Mahala (Lizzie) O'dell
[bobspu.ged]
BIO: Sarah and Lacey O'DELL apparently named their only daughter for Lacey's sister Elizabeth Mahala O'DELL ELLISON. Children of the couple's other children traditionally called her "Aunt Lizzie:. Per family reports, "Lizzie" O'DELL PARMAN was raised a staunch Baptist. Revised church history for the Mt. Salem Primitive Baptist Church near London, KY, reads: "Constituted 1876 at PHELPS school; ....1900: Clerk is Sam PARMAN...(1900) Membership includes... Mary, Elizabeth and S.I. PARMAN." (Identity of "Mary" is not known.) On the 1900 census for Laurel County, Lizzie reports that she has been married to Sam PARMAN for 24 years, and that she has given birth to 12 children, but only 10 are still living. Compiler found 7 of these children still in the family home in 1900. A probable eighth, Frank PARMAN, lived in the same neighborhood as the OVERBEY's in 1900. There is also a "Samuel PARMAN" with wife, "Belle" in dwelling #306 in E.D.#14, who may be another of the PARMAN's sons, but there has not been sufficient data to support this. The younger Samuel PARMAN is reported to have been born in 1875 in INDIANA; there is doubt that he belongs to this PARMAN family, since all the known children were born in KY. There are two other names involved in the marriage of one of the couples' known sons... Alexander's marriage to Dela McCOY in 1906 took place at the home of "Theo" (may be "Thos") PARMAN; Abe and Thos. PARMAN were witnesses. These may have been sons of the PARMANs who had left home before the 1900 census. Some family stories say that Elizabeth and Sam PARMAN left Laurel Co. in the early 1900s and went to KANSAS or one of the DAKOTAs. Since neither Isaac's nor Alex's marriage is reported to have taken place at the residence of their parents, these stories appeared to have been true. Then in August, 1995, compiler went to Laurel County, KY to do research. During the two days there, the graves of "Pappy" and "Mammy" (Samuel and Elizabeth) PARMAN were located near that of their daughter in the Hopkins Cemetery outside London, KY.

General Notes for Child John Henry (Bud) O'dell
[bobspu.ged]
BIO: Marriage Book S, p. 175 (July 1898) states the following re "Bud's" second marriage: "The groom" was 40 years old; 2nd marriage; a farmer; lived in Bush, KY "near McGregor's Store"; the wedding was performed by Elisha WILLIAMS, M.G., at J.H. O'DELL's. Witnesses were "Samiel" (probably Samuel) MAGEE and Frank PONDER or "PONDES" (could be Frank PARMAN???) John H.'s first marriage (to Sally A. WILLIAMS) was witnessed by G.H. BROWN and H. EDWARDS at Hiram EDWARDS'. An unrecorded deed found in "BRANCHES of LAUREL," Apr. 1994, relates the sale of approx. 50 acres of land in Laurel Co. by William H. SASSER and his wife, Mary C., to John H. ODELL ("Bud") in March, 1881. The description of the land and its location also gives "a Walnut Corner of Frank ODELL" (Wm. F. O'DELL) as one of the boundaries, and mentions "a black oak on ____?____ WILLIAMS Corner," as another boundary of this property "on CAIN CREEK." "Bud" O'DELL and most of his family moved from Laurel County, KY to Montgomery County, IN in the early 1900s. About 1914, they relocated to Fulton County, IN. "Bud" and Mary O'DELL remained in northern IN until their deaths, both in St. Joseph County. Although they never returned to Laurel County to live, it was still "home" to the O'DELLs. At least three of John H. O'DELL's sons wrote of the family history. None were ever published, but descendents of "Bud" O'DELL still maintain copies of those histories. Simeon's and John Ed's histories are full of interesting anecdotal reports, such as the two whiskey stills owned and operated by their father ..."government- inspected and licensed..." One of the boys also includes a story explaining why the family left Laurel County, relating an incident which caused hostilities between the O'DELLs and a neighboring family after their sons became involved in a situation requiring a court appearance. Since neither Simeon nor John Ed were born until after 1905, there is some possibility that their reports were "colored" somewhat by repeating what they remembered of family tradition, rather than first-hand knowledge. Compiler also owns a copy of a Deed made the 9th day of February, 1899 between A.F. and Olivia "Ollie" WILLIAMS and J.H. O'DELL, wherein "Bud" O'DELL purchased 20 acres of land from the WILLIAMS (parents of Walter R. WILLIAMS who would later marry "Bud's" niece, Callie O'DELL, in Fulton Co., IN). -------------------------- July 1996: In Montgomery County, IN, compiler found John H. O'DELL and his son, Hiram O'DELL, listed on page 188 of "Smith's Directory of Crawfordsville and The Farmers of Montgomery County, 1900-1910". Per that record, John H. lived at Rte. 3, Crawfordsville; his farm consisted of 240 acres. Hiram, also at Rte. 3, lists property of 100 acres. Among the births found at the county library, was that of "Leonard W. O'DELL," born to John and Mary JOHNSON O'DELL 08 MAY 1910. Three of John's sons remained in the Crawfordsville area where they married and had families--Ben, William S. and Joseph. A daughter, Betty, and her husband, Eddie WYATT, were there on the 1910 census; however, per the histories by "Ed" and "Sim", the WYATT's moved to Terre Haute. The 1920 census enumeration for Rochester Township, Fulton County, IN shows John H. "ODIL", age 63, residing on a "rented" farm with wife, Mary and seven children -- six boys and one girl, Helen L., 2 years of age. The boys recorded in the family home on 02 January 1920 are - Pleasant E., 19, David L., 17, John E., 14, Simeon -?-, 12, (Given name cannot be read, but looks like "Gouvin W."; this is probably "Leonard"), 7, and Donald L., 5.

General Notes for Child William Franklin (Frank) O'dell
[bobspu.ged]
m1. Isabell (Bell) Phelps m2. Virginia Margaret (Maggie) Phelps
BIO: Per the "Unrecorded Deeds" found on p 12 of the Laurel Co. Hist. Soc. publication, April 1994, the following deed was discovered in a box in the county court house:
" SASSER to O'DELL " "This indenture made and entered into this March 21, 1881 by and between Wm. H. SASSER ...and John H. ODELL...all of ...Laurel... KENTUCKY....for and in consideration of the sum of Eighty dollars... and sold unto the said John H. ODELL...parcel of land lying and being in Laurel County and State of KENTUCKY on the water of CAIN CREEK and bounded as follows... ___?____WILLIAMS Corner Thence unto the first to the top of the Ridge to a Walnut Corner of Frank ODELL and George PROFITT Thence ...supposed to contain fifty acres more or less... unto the said John H. ODELL his heirs and assigns...attested - Evan JONES Dep. Clk for C W WILLIAMS C.L.C." This deed gives some idea of the location of property owned by Wm. F. "Frank" O'DELL and his first wife, Rachel PHELPS O'DELL. It also indicates that one of the WILLIAMS families lived in the same general area, although the first name evidently was not readable on the deed. Compiler also found a deed indexed for Laurel Co. Deed Book K, page 256: Grantee - W.F. O'DELL Grantor - W.H. SASSER 26 OCT 1882. Deed was not researched at that time, so it is unknown if this is the same parcel of land or a different one. "Frank" O'DELL was the third of four children born to Sarah OVERBEY and Lacey O'DELL prior to Lacey's enrollment in the Union Army. About 3 years after his father's death, Sarah and her children relocated from Claiborne Co., TN to Laurel Co.,KY. In 1874, Sarah married William PHELPS, a widower and the father of Rachel Isabell and Virginia Margaret O'DELL. "Frank" lost his first wife, Rachel Isabell and both of their young daughters in the 1880s. He then married Rachel's younger sister in 1889. Sometime between Oct., 1901 and Oct.,1903, Frank and his family moved to Montgomery County, IN. Then before 1906 they moved again to OKLAHOMA, where three of their children were born before they returned to INDIANA about 1914 and remained there until their deaths. Frank was a staunch Baptist, and delighted in singing "the old gospel hymns" such as "Amazing Grace," which he had learned and had taught in "Shaped-note School" in KY. Compiler remembers little about this grandfather, but among the sketchy memories, there is a mental picture of Frank O'DELL, thick gray hair, heavy mustache, rocking in a large old wooden rocking chair on the porch of his daughter's home outside Argos, IN. As he rocked, Grandpa slapped the old rubber fly swatter on the arm of the chair in rhythm with the mountain-style version of "Amazing Grace" that he was singing; and as he sang every one of the 5 verses from memory, tears trickled from the corners of his ancient brown eyes. -------------------------- April, 1996 compiler received three letters from Frank O'DELL's youngest son, Hubert. In the letter dated 25 March 1996, Hubert wrote the following comments about his father: "...My Dad, and uncle Sam, my brother, drove down to Tennessee to see My dads Cousin one Marshall O'DELL years ago to try to find out something about the O'DELLs but they found out nothing, and they thought they were considered nosing in... ...My Dad, what little 'book larnin' he received, was at a school where the only book there was belonged to the 'master' and his lessons was sung to him and he and the other kids would repeat the same words the teacher would say with the same tune like 'Kaintuckey, Frankfort, on the Kaintuck River.' Of course their pencils were...pieces of slate to write on..." (And concerning his mother's role as "sole parent" in raising the children)"...I don't want you to think my dad was a no good piece of worthlessness, he was a good, Christian, honest hard working man that would do anything for a neighbor. When he left Kentucky he became a fiddle foot who couldn't keep Kentucky out of his memory. So you see, Us O'Dells never had much and never accumulated much but we were raised to believe if your word meant nothing you were poorer than us Hill Billies. My dad made sorghum molasses when we first came to Ind. from Okla..." July 1996: Compiler found a court record from 1891, Laurel Co., KY, wherein "W.F. O'DELL" was appointed guardian for Nancy O'DELL, female, 11 years old, heir of W.F. O'DELL, dec'd...Entered bond..." The Nancy O'DELL mentioned would have been the second child born to Frank and Bell PHELPS O'DELL. Compiler has no idea why this appointment was made; it has been suggested that it might have been the result of an estate settlement after the death of William A. PHELPS. Bell, one of the daughters of Wm. PHELPS, would have inherited a share of his estate. Since she and her daughter, Virginia Ann, both died about the same time as William PHELPS, it could be that her share was passed on to Nancy D. in trust. Since Nancy was only 11 years of age, it is likely that a guardian would have been appointed for that trust.

General Notes for Child Isaac Lacy (Ike) O'dell
[bobspu.ged]
BIO: Most documents show the birth of Isaac L. O'DELL as 18 JAN 1861; the 1900 census, however shows his birth as JAN 1862. One document in the Civil War Pension File states that he was two months of age when his father died in Camp Cumberland Ford, Knox County, KY. All other evidence indicates that he would have been one year and two months of age when Lacy O'DELL died, 18 MAR 1862. In August, 1997, photocopies of Isaac's obituary and another of an article about Isaac from the Stutsman County section of a NORTH DAKOTA History book, give his date of birth as "18 January 1862." On the 1870 census, Isaac L. is listed in Sarah O'DELL's home as being 8 years old. The widow and her four children were living in the Lynn Camp Post Office area in Laurel County, KY at this time. Sarah married William A. PHELPS in 1874. On the 1880 census, William PHELPS household consists of William, Sarah, his wife, his daughters, Louisa and Virginia (compiler's grandmother), William's sons John and William J. and a "Hireling" listed as "William MARION". Then, listed as a different family within the same household are "Isaac O'dell, son-in-law" and "Alcy E., daughter." Laurel County Marriage Records show the marriage of Isaac L. O'DELL and "Alice E. PHELPS" on 22 February 1880. Data given about the groom is that he is 18 years of age, that he was born in Claiborne Co., Tennessee and that this was his first marriage. The wedding took place at the home of William PHELPS. Witnesses were Wm. BROCK and "F.R. O'DELL" (This is probably an error and should have read "W.F." or "Frank" O'DELL, Isaac's older brother/ compiler's grandfather.) This wedding would have taken place about 3 months before the census enumeration for 1880. (The "BRANCHES OF LAUREL" reference listed above gives "2/19/1880" as the date of this marriage; this was probably the date of the filing of application for marriage.) William A. PHELPS died in 1887. In February, 1892 there is a deed recorded whereby Isaac L. O'DELL, Alcie E. O'DELL and Wm. J. PHELPS (probably Wm.'s son "Jason") convey their "child's share(s)" of the property belonging to "A. PHELPS, deceased" (William) to Sarah A. PHELPS "for and in consideration of $25 each... in hand and surely paid..." The deed specifies that this is the same land "... whereon Sarah PHELPS now lives..." Apparently the three agreed to give Sarah full ownership, at least of their three shares, and to give up any claim to William's estate. Compiler next found Isaac and Alcie (PHELPS) O'DELL on the 1900 census in Walnut Township, Montgomery County, IN. The third child listed on this census was born in Montgomery County in 1888; it appears that compiler's mother's "Uncle Ike" was the first of the O'DELLs to move from Laurel County, KY to INDIANA. On the 1900 census, Ike and Alcie have six children residing in their home. One of the questions on the 1900 census was addressed to the wife as to how many children she had given birth to and how many of those were still living in 1900. Alcie responded that she had given birth to 8 and seven were still living, so there evidently was one child gone from the home by census time that year. Those still in the home were: Flora; William L.; Alassy C.; China H.; Robert E. and Ida B., the baby, listed as 10 months of age. Per a letter from Hubert D. O'DELL in March, 1996, his aunt and uncle, Alcie and "Ike" O'DELL, left Montgomery County, IN in the early 1900's and relocated in Eldridge, North Dakota where "Ike' was post master for several years. Hubert makes reference in the same letter to "Ike" and his youngest son "Lacy Paul", visiting the family in northern INDIANA about 1924, after the death of Alcie E. PHELPS O'DELL. Hubert makes the statement that "his family all moved to California..." but it is not clear whether this was in reference to "Ike's family' or to the family of Lacy Paul. In August, 1997, compiler made contact with George L. BARRON, a genealogical researcher in Jamestown, ND (Stutsman County). Mr. BARRON agreed to conduct a search for this O'DELL family, and soon provided compiler with a large amount of documentation on the family. Among the obituaries, marriage records, cemetery indexes, etc. were photocopies of articles from two county history books which concern Isaac O'DELL. The first, a lengthy article devoted to Isaac, is transcribed below in its entirety:
"HISTORY OF NORTH DAKOTA," p 935 "ISAAC L. O'DELL" Isaac L. O'DELL, a merchant of Eldridge, has been engaged in the conduct of this business for about seven years, but has resided in the state since 1905. He was born near Cumberland Gap in the north- east part of TENNESSEE, January 18, 1862, a son of Lacy and Sarah (Owerby) O'Dell, the latter a daughter of a plantation and slave owner of Virginia. However, Mr. O'Dell, the father of our subject, joined the Union army and because of his position on the question of the right of the south to withdraw from the Union he was forced to secretly leave his Tennessee home at night in order to save his life, and went to London, Kentucky. He died of fever in that state and was there buried. To him and his wife were born four children: Mrs. Elizabeth PARMAN, living in Kentucky; John Henry, of Indiana; William Franklin, of OKLAHOMA; and Isaac L. The last named was but two years old when he went with his mother to KENTUCKY and spent his boyhood in the family home near London, acquiring a district school education. On the 22nd of February, 1878, he was married in Laurel county, that state, to Alcie PHELPS, a native of Kentucky, and they have become the parents of nine children: Dora E., the wife of W.T. MOORE, who follows farming near Salem, OREGON; Flora A., who died at the age of twenty-five years; John Franklin, who died when a year old; William, who is farming in NORTH DAKOTA; Catherine B. who became the wife of Roy TORY and died at Lakota, NORTH DAKOTA, in 1915; Helen, the wife of Frank ALEXANDER, of SOUTH DAKOTA; Robert, who was born in INDIANA and is now with the Rock Island Plow Company at Minneapolis; Ida Belle, at home; and Lacy Paul, at Jamestown. Mr. and Mrs. O'DELL began their domestic life in KENTUCKY, but after seven years removed with their family to INDIANA, settling near Crawfords- ville, in Montgomery county, where for nine years Mr. O'DELL was employed by James A. MOUNT, for four years chief executive of that state. He lived there until 1905, when he sold out all his interests in INDIANA and made his way to Jamestown, NORTH DAKOTA. For four years he cultivated a rented farm and then purchased a stock of merchandise from Alvin VESSEY, continuing the business in the same building for five years. In 1914 he purchased ground and erected a substantial business block costing about five thousand dollars, and in this he has a stock of general merchandise and machinery valued at forty-five hundred dollars. He is doing a good business and his trade is steadily growing. His store is neatly and tastefully arranged and his goods attractively displayed. In addition to conducting his merchantile interests he served as postmaster of Eldridge for eight years. Mr. O'DELL has put forth every possible effort to aid in the upbuilding of his village. He was one of the organizers of the Eldridge Commercial Club in 1915 and became its first president. Since that time the club has been instrumental in securing the establishment of a bank, a blacksmith shop and a restaurant in this place. Politically Mr. O'DELL is a republican, and for two years filled the office of justice of the peace. He belongs to the Masonic lodge at Jamestown and is an exemplary representative of the craft, loyal to its teachings and its purposes.
Another book, "A CENTURY OF STORIES, JAMESTOWN AND STUTSMAN COUNTY 1883-1983," (Towns and Townships -- page 286), carries an article on Eldridge town and township, which includes the following passages: "...This structure was built in 1881 by Henry VESSEY, who moved here from Sauk Centre, Minn. It is of Victorian style with ginger bread decorations and dormer windows. It once had a large porch across the front, but this was removed a few years ago because it overlapped railroad property... ...Isaac O'DELL built a second grocery store in 1913 on the south side of the tracks, and this was built in the style of a pitched roof and false front. This is owned by the McDONALD family at the present time..."
Mr. BARRON has also provided copies of an obituary and another item from the Jamestown newspaper of the day, "The Jamestown Sun."

BIO: In 1996, contact with Marjorie Walsh, through the Claiborne Historical Society, brought documentation of William Sherman's existence. In an article, "O'DELL, ODLE, ODEL, ODIL UPDATE", Mrs. Walsh first mentioned that a fifth child, William Sherman ODEL was born later (after the 1862 birth of Marshall's daughter, China.) In April, 1996, Mrs. Walsh sent compiler a copy of a family group of William Sherman O'Dell which had been constructed from data provided by William's granddaughter, Bessie Kunkle. It should be noted that the marriage date for William to Nancy MARSEE, appears 3 months after William's death. This could be a typographical, but the same year is recorded as the birth year of William's son, Jonathon. The marriage date is given as 12 OCT 1899; the death date as 21 JUL 1899 and Jonathon's birth date as 13 AUG 1899. No references were given except for the name of Bessie Kunkle. Jul, 1996: Compiler received a copy of Marshall's Civil War Pension File. This contained an update of data which Marshall completed at the request of the Pension Board in 1898. On this update, Marshall lists among his living children, William S., whose birthdate is given as 14 APR 1866. Since the first son of Wm. and Isabelle was born in August of 1897, it is likely that the marriage date for the couple should be 1896. William's death date, then may be 1899; if this is true, however, his son, Wm. Jonathon, was born about one month after Wm. died. William Sherman was 4 years old at the time of the 1870 census enumeration. The 1880 census enumeration for the household of Marshall and Sarah O'DELL shows
William S. as 14 years of age; his occupation is listed as "farming." Source: Elizabeth (Ann) Gilchrist-Jun 1998-O'Dell.GED
