BIO: A 92 year old house which has been occupied by the Burris GRUBB family the past several years, can boast of havung seen a great deal of life's various activities. In 1875 James PARMER bought the farm, now owned by Burris and Leta GRUBB, from the heirs of Joseph HOUGUE, who entered the land in 1829. This was among the first land entries in Johnson County. James was the son of Isaac and Sarah WISHARD PARMER. He was born in 1832 and in 1858 was married to Lucy OLDHAM. They were the parents of ten children, Charles O., Appie, Addie, Lula, Albert, James, George W., Alonzo, Frederick and William. PARMER spent three years in the California gold fields, going by train to the Mississippi River, where the track ended. From there he walked, eventually meeting a drover taking horses west and went the rest of the way with him. On his return to Indiana, he settled on the farm just east of Rocklane. A house on the present site burned. The story was told of PARMER panning the ashes after the house burned and finding his keepsake nuggets. The present house was built for James PARMER in 1870. William Hester and George Robison were the carpenters.
From the Banta History of Johnson County, IN James Parmer is a practical and progressive farmer of Clark Township, a native of Kentucky, and the son of Isaac and Sarah (Wishard) Parmer. They emigrated from Kentucky to Indiana about 1835. Sarah died in 1837 and Isacc married Jane Clark (Robison), the widow of Thomas Robison, in 1838. Our subject was reared on a farm in Johnson County and received a fair education for that day. At age eighteen, he served an apprenticeship at the blacksmith's trade, which he followed for 3 years. At the age of 21, he drifted with the tide of emigration to the gold fields of California, walking to the Mississippi River and there finding work with a horse drover, working his way to California. He returned to Indiana and settled in Johnson County on a farm where he now lives. It contains about 110 acres of well improved land. He married Lucy (Aunt Caroline) Oldham on 23 SEP 1858. In politics he has always been a staunch republican, casting his first ballot for John C. Fremont. He and his wife are members of the Christian Church. He has been a deacon for several years.
