It is uncertain whether Jocelin was a bastard of Duke Godfrey or a legitimate son of his 2nd marriage. The senior male line became extinct on the death of Joceline, Earl of Northumberland in 1670. His estate passed to only daughter Elizabeth d.1722.

An Anglo-Danish noble, he rose to power under Canute, after whose death Godwin supported the acession of Edward the Confessor and became a dominant figure in royal government. In 1045 his daughter Edith married Edward. He was overthrown in 1051 but regained his position by force in 1052. He was suceeded by his son Harold. Died of Apoplexy.
During a quarrel with his son-in-law (Edward the Confessor), Edward designates William of Normandy (William the Conqueror) as his successor. But after Godwin's death, his son Harold becomes leader of the army and in favour with England.On Edward's death in 1066, the Eglish nobility makes Harold king. On 25 September, Harold defeats a Norwegian invasion at Stamford Bridge. He marched south to meet William at the Battle of Hastings and was defeated and killed.
