Received e-mail from Arlene Reese Wooten today May 8, 200 0 : Hi, sorry I have been so long in getting back with you. I talked to Dr. Barron, and he said that they replaced Nancy tombstone, he thought. But he was wrong I went over to the cemetery and looked, and looked, and finely I found it, it was a old stone, that had been broken and put back together. It said, Nancy C. Reed born Sept. 2,1836 died March 16, 1909, it had a little saying down under that but I could make it all out, it said, Gone to a room i n t h e garden of heaven to dwell with the poor and the best. Or someth i n g like that. But it doesn't say anything about her being Indian. Dr. Marvin Barron, is a decendant of Louisa Matilda Josep h e ne Reed Reese Wooten (Fanny Wooten), she is his gt grandmother. Dr. Barron said to tell you that you could write to him , h i s address is Marvin Barron Box 729 Rainsville, Al. 35986 I haven't got a chance to go to the library yet, but w h e n I get a time I with try to go and get the census you need on the Reed's. It's so busy around here with mowing the yard and plant i n g the garden and keeping the grandkids, and running them around to sch o o l and everything I just have anytime for anything else. John was born in 1675 in Maspeth Kills, one of sever a l v i l lages in th e Town of Newtown, Long Island. Aft e r remo vi n g to Elizabeth Borough , New Jersey, about 16 98 , alon g wi t h a number of other Newton residen ts, h e mar ried Ma ry Pa ck , daughter of George and Mary Pack , a prom ine nt e arly E liz abeth Town settler. Soon afte r, John a nd Mary e stablis h e d their home in Westfield , a sparsely -settled t en squar e mi le tract known as th e west field s of El izabe th Town , locat ed some seven mi les to the we st, between th e Rahwa y Riv e r and the Watc hung Mountains . The tract i s part o f a sec tion of sout hern Essex stre tching from th e villag e of Conne cticut F arms (now Union ) south to Plain field tha t was bein g lai d out by develop ers and sold in 1 00-acr e p arcels to s t imulate settlemen t. Some account s state tha t John origi na lly pu rchase d 1, 500 acres of la nd in Westfi eld; but , no pr oof has b een found. Here, Joh n became an ac tiv e and promine nt res ident. In 1712 , h e was appointe d o verseer of Elizab et h Borough roads , a post normall y hel d f or about ten yea r s. John was al so active in f oundin g and providing lan d fo r t he first W estfield Pre sbyteria n Church, a log bu ildin g on the Eliza beth Roa d b uilt in 1 730. Accordin g to his g rave marke r in th e 'old cemetery ' of the Chu r ch, John die d 15 Janu ary 1 738, age 63. Mar y is not buri ed there.

John Thomas Jr lived in Ozark, AR where he owned a L a r ge lot adjoining Highway 64 and Gar creek. We drove aro u n d his house on 6/11/92 the place is of good repair, a n d i s still lived-in.
1910-Census shows John Thomas Reed. and Family living o n E a st Mulberry Road (Wallace Township) Ozark, Franklin C o. , Ar kansas. The second house down that road Lived the T rip p's. John's son William Pinkney wrote to his Daughter Alta (To o t 's) Reed that his Father was Irish & German, and his M ot he r was Cherokee Indian. He also said that Richard Re e d a bro ther to John Thomas Sr. REED. was married to a Cr ee k Indian . On John Thomas Reed's death certificate Richa r d was liste d as person notified; Their Father was Tom R ee d from Sout h Carolina, and Mother was Carolina Pack fro m S outh Carolin a.
