Start of the branch of the family known as the "Stanhopes of Chevening". He was an ambitious man. During the reign of William 111, he became an important foreign minister and was sent to the court of Spain and then to the Hague, at the King's instruction. These postings, although prestigious, did not bring Alexander happiness. He hated the Spanish climate, disliked the other members of the court, and missed his family terribly.
