General Notes (Husband)
[18401.ged]
From Cutler's "History of Kansas", 1883: "RICHARD R. REDFIELD, dealer in musical merchandise, sewing machines, etc., was born at Twinsburg, Ohio, and was reared on a farm and in a saw mill. Some years later he moved to Coldwater, Michigan, where he was for two years employed in a photograph gallery. He then removed to Hillsdale. The subject of this sketch came to Humboldt (Allen County, Kansas) in the fal of 1866, and was for two years employed as a clerk in the mercantile business, after which he engaged in his present enterprise. He deals in all kinds of musical instruments, sewing machines, etc., and also teaches vocal and instrumental music."
The Civil War records of Richard R. Redfield were obtained on February 2, 1998. They show he enlisted in Co. "H", 177th Ohio Volunteers, on August 23, 1864, for a period of one year. He was discharged prior to that due to illness His description on the enlistment records show him (at 28 years old) to be 5' 6", light complexion, hazel eyes, "light" hair; occupation, "artist". See records in hard copy files.
The Pension file of Richard R. Redfield was obtained from the National Archives on February 26, 1998. His pension application states the following: "My right leg was broken six inches below the knee and my knee injured on June 1865 at Twinsburgh, Summit County, Ohio. My knee has been sore and painfu at times ever since, further the last few years it has been getting more painfu and lame, owing, I think, to my age and the Rheumatism with which I am troubled My left ankle was broken or dislocated in March 1880. I was thrown out of a buggy near Chanute, eight miles south of Humboldt, Kansas, by a runaway team. My left ankle was agin sprained or severly hurt 1882 by a nervous horse knockin me down and stepping on my ankle at Humboldt, Kansas. I have not been in the military or naval service since June 24th 1865."[Downing.ged]
Brother of Josiah Clark Redfield. From Cutler's "History of Kansas", 1883:

Richard has several references in the book, "A History of The Humboldt, Kansas, Community, 1855 - 1988", by Genivieve & Harold Choguill, 1988. Among the most interesting is the following:
"THE HUMBOLDT BAND
Richard R. Redfield came to Humboldt in late 1865 to clerk in his brother's hardware store. He had been a bandmaster during the Civil War, and after being detached he returned to his home in Ohio and then headed for Humboldt. Soon after arrival in 1866 he decided to organize a band. A number of the businessmen of the town were experienced musicians, and the townsmen raised $500 for instruments. The horns were Sutton horns, held with the bell pointing backward over the shoulder so that those marching might hear the music better.
"The personnel of the original band were R. R. Redfield, conductor an E flat cornet; Nick Platt, E Flat cornet; Dr. H. L. Dornberg, B Flat cornet; Martin Henrich, B Flat cornet; H. Holcomb, alto; Nick Kemmerer, tenor; William Scott, tenor; J.C. Redfield, baritone; Judge John Goodin, tuba; James Blythe, bass drum; and Severcool, snare drum.
"Band rehearsals were held in Judge Goodin's office in a "Shanghi" building on the southside of Bridge street between 7th and 8th streets in the front room upstairs.
"From 1867 to 1871 the bandstand was a pair of Fairbanks wagon scales at the southwest corner of the square. J.C.Redfield had moved his hardware store from the Shanghi building to the new brick building on the corner. The scales belonged to him and he let the band use it for a bandstand. He could tend store and play baritone in the band at the same time. If a load of hay came in for weighing, the bnd disbanded until the load passed, and then reassembled and continued whre it left off."
General Notes (Wife)
[18401.ged]
At the death of Richard R. Redfield, Ida submitted a Declaration for a Widow's Pension. This form was discovered in the pension file of R. R. Redfield obtaine February 26, 1998, from the National Archives. The application states in part:
"that the said soldier died Feb 23rd 1908 at Humboldt, Kansas, that she was not divorced from him; that she has not remarried since his death; and that she is without other means of support than her daily labor and an actual net income not exceeding two hundred and fifty dollars per year. (typewritten in:) in fac has no income at all, and County bore the Expense of his Funeral."
According to the obituary of her son, Gail A. Redfield, Ida was a teacher, teaching in the Humboldt city schools.
The 1910 census for Allen county (in files) shows Ida's mother as being born in New Jersey and her father born in Ohio.
General Notes for Child Carl Redfield
