Dear Cousin Zora, "This is information which you sent to me in December, 1944."
Great grandfather Power- born in Ireland. At age 16 he embarked on a ship bound for America. It took 6 months to make the voyage and while en route, he met the Adams family. He fell in love with their daughter, Sophia Adams. She was a very lovely Scotch girl. Her father was a brother to John Quincy Adams who was younger and came later to America. They stayed a while in New Orleans where great grandfather Power and Sophia Adams were married, then moved to South Carolina. There was so much stone , they built a home, or "mansion" as they were called. They bought 500 acres of land for $1.00 per acre. It was 8 miles east of Spartansburg, and was covered with fine timber. They prospered there. Sophia greived a lot because she wanted to see her father and mother. Then the war broke out(which war?) The soldiers took the home for a barracks and ruined it. As the war grew so close, they took allthey could in a covered wagon and joined a caravan.
They had 50 Negro slaves with which to carry on their work. They told the Negroes they might have the place.
They moved near St. Louis, Missouri, stayed there two years. They became friemds oj John Ricketts who persuaded great grandfather Power to go to Indiana. They came to Terre Haute, Indiana (What year?) which looked so good to them that they stayed there a year, then moved to to 8 miles of Indianapolis. (Now it is the suburbs of Indianapolis) They lived there until Sophia died. She is buried west of the INdian trail on the west side of Road 29 on a rather rolling hill. { I suspect that is the end of Zora's information--Robert Alan Spurgeon} {The remainder is probably Laura's} If there is a tombstone, does it have dates when she was born and when she died) Sam Power came to work for John Ricketts at Scircleville (was this the same Sam Power who came from Ireland at 16 or was it your brother? Are there dates on his tombstone?)
Sophia Adams' mother and father died near Mobile, Alabama. (I wonder if anyone visited their graves, and are there dates?)
Miss Anderson, daughter of Reverend Anderson went to see what is known as the Power's Plantation near Spartansburg, and Negroes live in it. It is red granite. Said it must have been a lovely place in its time.
At another time, Zora, you wrote that Samuel Power and family moved from Spartansburg, South Carolina, to Plattsburg, Kansas, then to Tennessee then to St. Louis, Missouri, then to a farm 20 miles east of Rerre Haute, Indiana and stayed there until his wife died; then came to live with his son, Sam Power (your father) for six years. He married Lucy or Caroline Circles(sic). Is buried in the Baker Cemetery east of Scirclrville. does his tombstone have dates?)
