Phinehas Pratt was born in England about 1590, and wa s t h e son of the Reverend Henry Pratt, whose father was John.  Either John or the f a t her of John, was a Frenchman who bore the surname Plat, or Platt, having f l e d from France at a time of political unrest.  He became an armor-bearer t o t h e Monarch of England, and his name was subsequently changed to Pratt which ge t s i ts derivation from the Latin root word meaning a flat, level surface, or mea d o w.

Henry Pratt, the father of Phinehas, was a nonconformis t m i nister who preached the gospel contrary to the rules of the Established Chu r c h of England, and was imprisoned along with over 400 other religious teache r s i n gloomy, damp jails in England.  While there, Henry managed to communicate w i t h his grief-stricken family by writing to them with the blood which he drew f r o m his arm. Abigail Pratt, granddaughter of Phinehas, used to relate this st o r y to her grandchildren.  She was very intelligent and had a corr e c t and retentive memory.  It is not known whether or not Henry died in pri s o n or was released as an incurable invalid due to the cruel treatment he recei v e d in prison.
