On 21 January 1662/3 , Phine a s Pratt and wife Mary sold to John Smith a woodlo t in Cha rl estown [MLR 10:136].
In payment for his history of the early settlement enti t l ed A Declaration of the Affairs of the English People T h a t First Inhabited New England, the General Court on 7 M a y 1 662 granted him three hundred acres "where it is t o b e had , not hindering a plantation" [MBCR 4:2:56]; on 2 0 Oc tobe r 1664 this land was laid out "east of Merremac k River , nea r the upper end of Nacooke Brook, on the sout heast o f it" [ MBCR 4:2:154-55]. In October 1668 Phineas P ratt aga in petit ioned the General Court asking for furthe r assista nce [MHS C 4:4:487-88; MD 4:134-35], but this pet ition wen t unanswer ed. Although the General Court decline d his requ est, the se lectmen of Charlestown provided ampl y for him f or the res t of his life [MD 4:135-36, citing C harlestown T own Order s 3:96, 100, 205, 4:2, 16, 17].
In his will, dated 8 January 1677[/8] and proved 15 J u n e 1680, "Phinias Pratt of Charlstown ... joiner, bein g ve r y aged and crazy of body," bequeathed to "my belove d wif e M ary Pratt all my moveable goods and 40s. a year t o be p ai d out of my land in Charlestowne and the use of t he gard e n for term of her life"; "this 40s. is to be pai d by my s o n Joseph Pratt for and in consideration of th e having o f m y land and my wife is to have a convenient r oom of my s on J oseph with a chimney in it to her conten t to live in f or te rm of her life, without molestation o r trouble, but i f my s on Joseph doth not perform this wil l that then my wi fe Mar y Pratt shall have the one half o f the land to her d isposin g for her best comfort; it is t o be understood tha t the on e half which the new house sta ndeth on is given t o Joseph u pon the condition of providi ng of a convenient r oom for m e and my wife for term of ou r lives and this othe r half fo r the paying of the 40s . a year"; residue at th e death "o f my wife it shall be e qually divided among al l my children " [MPR Case #12762; M D 4:139].
The inventory of the estate of "Phinias Prat of Charlst o w n, deceased," was taken 21 May 1680 and totalled &40 16 s . 6 d., including real estate valued at &24: "a parcel o f l and, " &18; and "cow common in Charlstown stinted commo n, " &6 [M PR Case #12762; MD 4:139-40].
The town of Charlestown supported the widow Pratt w i t h a small annual stipend, as seen in town orders dat e d 5 Fe bruary 1683/4 and 7 March 1686/7 [MD 4:137, citin g C harlest own Town Orders 4:56, 84].
On 31 July 1738 the court's commissioners examined th e e s tate of Phineas Pratt and determined that a share b e giv e n to each of the children, including the heirs of s ons Jo h n and Peter, who were then dead. Although most o f the oth e r children were also deceased at that date, the y were no t s o noted. The children listed were John, Samue l, Daniel , Pet er, Mary, Joseph, Aaron and Mercy [MD 4:138 ].

ASSOCIATIONS: See JOSHUA PRATT for a discussion of the li k e lihood that he and Phineas Pratt were brothers. COMMENTS: According to his Declaration, Phinehas Prat t w a s one of ten men who came to the new world on behal f of T HO MAS WESTON, in the ship Sparrow in 1622. They arr ived fa r u p the coast at "Damorali's Cove" where they att empted t o ac quire a pilot, but none among the fishing shi ps ther e nor t he Indians would assist them. Sailing dow n the coas t, the y recognized Plymouth when a round of cel ebratory or dnanc e greeted them. Two further ships with We ston's men f ollowe d and by August 1622 the settlement o f Wessagusset [ Weymout h] was commenced. Unfortunately, th ey spent their t ime buil ding fortifications and were soo n starving.
On learning of the intent of some Indians to wipe ou t t h e English at both Wessagussett and Plymouth, Pratt de term in ed to travel on foot to Plymouth to warn the settle men t an d look for help. Pursued through the snow, he los t hi s way , and consequently lost his pursuers who bette r kne w the pa th. Arriving nearly exhausted "running dow n a hil l I [saw ] an English man coming in the path befor e me. The n I sat d own on a tree & rising up to salute hi m said, 'Mr . Hamdin , I am glad to see you alive.' He sai d, 'I am gla d & ful l of wonder to see you alive: let us s it down, I se e you ar e weary' [MD 4:91-92]. Miles Standis h and his comp any, no w amply warned, set out on a preempt ive attack, whi ch warde d off the anticipated danger. Phin eas made his hom e at Plym outh for a quarter of a centur y thereafter.
On 5 November 1644 "Thomas Bunting, dwelling with Phin e a s Pratt, hath, with and by the consent of the said Phin ea s , put himself as a servant to dwell with John Cooke, J uni o r ... during the term of eight years ... the said Jo hn C oo ke having paid the said Phineas for him one milc h co w .. . and 40s. in money and is to lead the said Phine as tw o loa ds of hay yearly during the term of seven years " [PC R 2:78].

King Philip and King Philip's War

'King Philip' was a name given to the son of Massasoi t b y t he English. This was not his real name. His real name was Metacom (someti m e s spelled Metacomet or Pometacom). He had an older brother whom t h e E nglish called "Alexander" whose Indian name was Wamsutta. Sachem Massas o i t had been a 'friend' of the Plymouth Colony. He tried to maintain pe a c e with the English to enable both cultures to co-exist with as lit t l e conflict as possible. Massasoit and the Wamapanoags in fact, save d t h e lives of the Pilgrims by teaching them how to fish through the first w i n ter of their invasion on New England shores, and sharing with them th e i r own provisions.

After Massasoit's death in 1661/2, his son Alexander w a s t o become Sachem, but a mysterious 'illness' resulted in Alexander's deat h w h ile on a visit to the English fathers in Boston. Philip was convince d h i s brother had been poisoned by the English whom he did not trust. He also fe a r ed for the future of his own people as the English became more domin a n t and wielded their hegemony over the Indian people. They passed a ser i e s of laws, imprisoned Indians for their 'failure' to obey these la w s ( many of the Indians could not read or write English and had no id e a o f what the laws were, but were prosecuted before English courts neverthel e s s); took away Indian lands by having Indian people sign deeds conveyi n g p roperty with many of these Indians having no concept of what they we r e d oing. It was deviance and trechery, greed and thievery, bigotry and in j u stice-- there is no question about it.

Philip and his Wampanoag people were quite aware of the E n g lish massacre of the Pequot Indians at Mystic Connecticut in 1647. They k n e w their future was at stake and their survival on their own ancestral la n d s depended upon taking a stand of some kind. The English wanted to tur n N e w England Indian tribes against each other - to keep them from respondi n g a s a group where they would have superior numbers and more bargaining pow e r . (i.e. the Connecticut Colony's friendship with the Mohegans and R I ' s friendship with the Narragansetts).

Philip chose a course which would prove to be fatal for h i m self and his people. He commenced the New England Indian wars as h e s a w the pressure of the colonists upon hunting and fishing grounds, his peopl e ' s cornfields and way of life. His goal was to push the English back to t h e s ea on boats back to whence they came, but he had little idea that this w a s a n impossibility. From 1675/6, skirmishes and battles took place which invo l v ed the death of many people-- including Indians-- men, women & children , m a ny of whose names we shall never know. However, we do know the nam e s o f a good share of the English soldiers who fought in this war.
