Smedley family, p. 564:
   "After attending the Manual Labor School, at Whitestown, NY, he taught a district school one winter, and then, about 1850, opened a boarding school in E Nottingham, which he named Jordan Bank Seminary.  In the fall of 1853 he gave u his school and went to Europe, where he spent four years in the Universities of Leipsig, Gottingen, Heidelberg, and in Paris, and receiving the degree of Docto of Philosophy at Gottingen.  Early in 1857 he entered the laboratory of J. B. Lawes, the well known agricultural chemist of England, and there spent two years; during which he prepared valuable papers, which were read before the British Association for the Advancement of Science, and which procured him an election as a Fellow of the Chemical Society of England.  Returning home in the autumn of 1859, he assumed the presidency of the Farmer's High School, near Bellefonte, PA, the name of which was afterwards changed to that of the Agricultural College of Pennsylvania.  He had visited and carefully studied the chief agricultural academies and schools of Europe, and his idea of what an American agricultural college should be was as definite as definite as it was comprehensive and just.  For over five years he labored untiringly in establishing the college on a broad and enduring basis, when he was suddenly cu off in the prime of life, leaving a reputation for ripe scholarship, genial temper, and high-toned purity and rectitude in thought, word, and deed. His widow resides at Bellefonte.  No children."

Email from Marjorie Martin This probably won't be of much help but it is the best I can come up with right now without doing some digging.  It is the  "Will of Edward Pugh". In the name of God Amen I, Edward Pugh of South Carolina, Laurens District, being weak in Body and well stricken in age, but of sound mind and Memory, Blessed be to the Almighty God for the same and publish this my last Will and Testament, in manner and form following Viz, that is to say, First after all my just Debts be paid, First I give unto my son William Pugh One Dollar because he had  had his part and all my Estate, my land, Stock and Household furniture, and every thing possess I give unto my four daughters, Polly Cumpton the wife of Wiliam Cumpton, Elizabeth Gilbert, the wife of William Gilbert, Nancy Spurgin Widow.  Nancy Spurgin is to have fifty dollars less than my other daughters, Sally Pugh Single Woman.  These four daughters shall have all I possess according to the above Directions, and my executor shall have power to sell and make sale of and rights to my Land and the same as would myself and I do appoint my son-in-law William Gilbert my executor to this my last Will and Testament,  In witness, I have set my hand and seal this 17th day of January 1829. Email from Marjorie Martin This probably won't be of much help but it is the best I can come up with right now without doing some digging.  It is the  "Will of Edward Pugh". In the name of God Amen I, Edward Pugh of South Carolina, Laurens District, being weak in Body and well stricken in age, but of sound mind and Memory, Blessed be to the Almighty God for the same and publish this my last Will and Testament, in manner and form following Viz, that is to say, First after all my just Debts be paid, First I give unto my son William Pugh One Dollar because he had  had his part and all my Estate, my land, Stock and Household furniture, and every thing possess I give unto my four daughters, Polly Cumpton the wife of Wiliam Cumpton, Elizabeth Gilbert, the wife of William Gilbert, Nancy Spurgin Widow.  Nancy Spurgin is to have fifty dollars less than my other daughters, Sally Pugh Single Woman.  These four daughters shall have all I possess according to the above Directions, and my executor shall have power to sell and make sale of and rights to my Land and the same as would myself and I do appoint my son-in-law William Gilbert my executor to this my last Will and Testament,  In witness, I have set my hand and seal this 17th day of January 1829.
