Hon. William Sharpe (1742-1818), son of Thomas and Elizabe th Sharpe, first pursued classical studies, then law. Whe n he was 21, he moved to Mecklenberg County, NC, where he p racticed law and also surveying and then moved to Rowan Cou nty, NC, where he located his home estate. A lawyer by prof ession, he became one of the prominent men of the state an d a distinguished patriot of the American Revolution. He re presented Rowan County at the NC State Congress at New Ber n and Hillsboro in 1775 and also at Halifax, NC, in 1776 wh en the NC Constitution was framed. After acting as Captai n and Aide de Camp to General Rutherford in 1776 against th e Cherokee Indians, he was appointed by Gov. Caswell in 177 7 to form a treaty with them. In 1779 he was sent as a memb er from NC to Continental Congress at Philadelphia, PA an d served until 1782. William married Catherine Ruth Reese , daughter of David Reese and Susan Ruth Polk Reese. Davi d Reese was a celebrated patriot of NC and a signer of th e Mecklenberg Declaration of Independence in 1775. His wife , Susan Ruth Polk, was a granddaughter of Robert Bruce Polk . William and Catherine Ruth had 12 children: Matilda, Ruth , Thomas Reese, Abner, Betsey, David, Elam, Marcus, Cynthia , Elvira, Edwin, and Carlos.
Served as captain and member of the Provincial and Fede ral Congress; Aide de Camp; Patriot, member of the Continen tal Congress; a member of the Council of Safety and one o f the committee which framed the state Constitution. Winston, and Robert Lanier to form a trea ty with them.

General Notes for Child Elam Sharpe
Elam Sharpe (1777- 1851), son of William and Catherine Rut h Sharpe, was born at Pendleton, SC. He married Elizabeth ( Betsey) Miller, daughter of John C. Miller of Wales/Englan d who was King's Printer and Publisher and was exiled fro m London, England on account of certain publications (sai d to be the "Junius" letters) which exposed the wrongdoing s of royalty. Elam and Betsey's children were: William Osca r, Col. Elam, Dr. Edwin, Dr. Marcus LaFayette, and Elizabet h. Elam and Elizabeth Sharpe and John Miller are all burie d in the Old Stone Church Graveyard in Pendleton, South Carolina. Their home p lace located in Pendleton still stands in 1996 and has bee n kept in very good condition. Elam and Betsey's children w ere: William Oscar, Col. Elam, Dr. Edwin, Dr. Marcus LaFaye tte and Elizabeth.
