The Official Southard Gazette & Record: 4/1 - It is now clear that the wife of the Isaac who lived in Su rry County was Sarah Elizabeth Carter Southard and not Sarah Ren ne Southard (Micajah's mother). Sarah Carter on Isaac's death (b efore 27 November 1790) married their next door neighbor, John P ipes. It appears that in approximately 1794, the Surry County Co urt took custody of Isaac's children. The author has not found a nything to support that Micajah Southard (born 21 March 1767), h usband of Martha Perkins, ever lived in Surry County NC at any t ime. 4/2 - Emily Southard who lives in Surry County NC had an opportu nity to view copies of a Carter family Bible which lists the 178 3 marriage of Sarah Elizabeth Carter (born 1766 in New Jersey) a nd Isaac Southard (born before 1761). In addition, Isaac's will is witnessed by Sarah's brother, Abel Carter (born 1754,) and Jo hn Pipes (born before 1779) whose land adjoined Isaac's.

Ancestors and Descendants of Micajah and Martha (Perkins) Southa rd by Ralph Potter (and Cecil Southard). Micajah Southard, son o f Isaac Southard, was born 21 March 1767, probably enroute by sh ip from NJ to NC. He died near Sparta, White Co, TN in 1859, at age 92. He was bonded to marry Martha Perkins in Lincoln Co, NC on 6 Jan 1795. Both Micajah and Martha Perkins Southard are buri ed in Goodwin Cemetary - 7 or 8 miles north of Sparta TN & to th e west of the highway. Their family Bible was passed on to their daughter Sarah, who wa s living with them in the 1850 Census in McMinn Co TN. Sarah mov ed to Batesville AR and lived with her nephew Joseph during 1870 & 1880 censuses. When she died was left with Joseph. It was "lo st in a fire" but was copied by others before it was lost. Micajah is a Bible name usually spelled Micaiah. (Kings 22:8) It was not an unusual name among early families but was among Sout hards. It probably came from Jane Combs who married Solomon Sout hard 28 Mar 1755 in Hempstead. Jane had a brother, Micajah Combs . "In the bounds of the 1st and 2nd regiments of the County of Bur ke" 1840 Burke County, North Carolina Census, page 139: Micajah Southards, 1 male 60-70, 1 female 50-60, 3 females 20-30, 2 male s 15-20, 1 female 15-20, 1 male 10-15, 1 female 10-15, and 1 fem ale 5-10 (no slaves listed).
