Harold's title of Ruler of Jutland seems a bit pretent i o u s ; he was granted the fife of Rustringen by the mou t h o f t h e Weser in 826. First, he had been baptised wi t h th e Empe ro r as godfather, from whom he received muni fi cen t christe nin g presents. He is credited by some a s hav in g built th e Dane virke, one of the largest of nor ther n Eur ope's ancie nt defe nsive works. The entire comp lex c onsist s of severa l differe nt ramparts, about 18 mi les i n length , running fr om the Sch lei fjord in the eas t to t he river s Rheide and T reene in th e West. The firs t phase , the Nor th Wall, was bu ilt in 737 ( dated by den drochron ology); th e East Wall, pro tecting the S vansen p eninsul a from the so uth is believed t o be of abou t th e same ag e (no scientifi c dating yet). Th e 'Great Wall ' , the thir d phase, make s a zigzag across th e country f rom H edeby i n the east t o nearly Hollingstedt i n the we st wher e th e two rivers me et to form the Eider. Th is th ird secti o n has been dated t o 951-968, suggesting th a t Harald 'Bl ueto oth' (who was re sponsible for vast str uctu res elsewh ere i n the country) c ommissioned it. In 9 74, th e year af ter Empe ror Otto I die d, the Danevirke w as take n by Ott o II. The Da nevirke wa s expanded durin g the 11th a nd 12t h centuries t o defend a gainst both Sl av and German a ttac ts. During the s econd ha lf of the 12 th century, Valdem a r 'The Great' adde d a wal l of brick . It was extended f o r the last time in 186 4 whe n the Pr ussians attacked Den mar k.
