General Notes (Husband)



 From "A History of Richland County" by Edwin J. Green:
           Timothy Rives of Virginia settled with others o f his
          family below Columbia before the Revolution. He s erved
          as a lieutenant under Col. Thomas Taylor and als o in the
          commissary department. He was one of the justice s that
          formed the county court. After Columbia was lai d out he
          bought two lots on the southwest corner of Senat e and
          Richardson Streets, where he erected a tavern, wh ich was
          in existence in 1794, as the picture of the Stat e House of
          that date was taken from his tavern. It is mere c onjecture
          that President Washington stopped at this hotel . When
   -      the South Carolina college was opened in 1805, Ti mothy
          Rives "dieted" the students for the first six mon ths. In i         the following year he left the hotel, which was t hen under
          the management of Dr. Samuel Green, for a short t ime
          until he moved to Colonel Taylor's tavern. Gersham
          Chapman then took the Rives hotel. Timothy Rive s acquired
          considerable holdings above Columbia, where he
          built his home and where he died about 1823.
