General Notes (Husband)

[royalty.ged]

The Augustan. #66. Mikhail IV Feodorovich Romanov (1613-1645). He was related to Rurik through the Shuiskys, of all people. His father, Filaret, quickly contrived to return to Moskva, was made Patriarch, and became the power behind the throne, Tsar in all but name. His reign was a period of retrenchment. During this time, Russia's international trade and contacts with foreigners increased. The main entrepot for tade with Europe was the city of Arkhangel'sk on the White Sea. Generally speaking, foreign merchants were allowed only to be wholesalers, selling to and buying from a group which now appears as the most elite class of Russian merchants, the gosti. In the rise and fall of idividual gosti, and in the etreme difficulty and uncertainty of their situatio, and in the rigid state control of the economy, we may read the tale of the failure of capitalism to develop in Romanov Russia. Until his death in 1633, Patriarch Filaret ruled the state. Thereafter, Mikhail was under the influence of various favorites. The newness of the dynasty led to the dalling of many Zemsky Sobors, with varying success. When Mihail died, the country still had not fully recovered from the Time of Troubles.

The Augustan. #67. Aleksei Mikhailovich Tishaishii (the Quiet, the Gentle) (1645-1676). Aleksei was intensely religious, and perhaps even more a puppet for powers behind the throne than had been his father. Two important disruptions of the realm occurred durig this reign. The first was the 1647-1648 uprising in Moskva (and elsewhere), led primarily by middle-level nobility. The frightened regime called a Zemsky Sobor--the last one, as it turned out, which didn't do much of anything--which accepted a new legal code for the land (and influenced the content of some provisions). The new code tended to streamline the laws of Russia, but most importantly it set the capstone on the enserfment of the peasantry. The second disruption was the Cossark revolt (which drew many peasants into its ranks) of Stefan (Stenka) Razin, which was suppressed only with great difficulty.

The Russian church was seriously disrupted by the attempted reforms of the Patriarch Nikon, a favorite of Aleksei's, who sought to introduce into the rituals and observances of the church what he conceived to be the Greek practice. Nikon was eventually elimiated, although his program resulted in the secession from the chuirch of the so-called Old Believers.

There was also a war with Poland (1654-1667), which resulted in a major victory against that decaying power, which is the first proof of Leon Trotsky's observation that if Tsarist Russia could get the drop on some nation weaker than herself, she would probably win. This victory strangthened the dynasty, and after the Razin affain the Zemsky Sobor is called no more.
