Alexander was born in Sandisfield, MA, November 27, 1 8 1 2 , a nd moved with his family to Ohio in 1816. When Al ex an de r wa s 15, his father died, leaving him in charg e o f th e fa mily . He took up the trade of carpenter an d join er af ter s ervin g a four year apprenticeship unde r Lyma n P. Ham lin. H e wa s a noted builder of bridges, h omes, a nd othe r structu res . One of the first dwelling s he const ucted wa s a fram e hous e for his widowed mothe r. The brid ge whic h he buil t acros s the Mahoning Rive r south of Dee rfield s tood for f ifty yea rs. He is als o credited with b uilding t he second F irst Meth odist chu rch in Deerfield . At age sev enty-two h e invente d a succ essful patent fen ce.
At one time he reportedly captured two horse thiev e s ( o n e at Goergetown and the other at Deerfield), retu rn ed t h e a nimals to their owners, and received a rewar d o f $50. He attended the inauguration of Grover Cleveland in Was h i n g ton, DC, and visited Mount Vernon. His first presid en ti a l v ote was for Andrew Jackson.

James B. Wilcox was born in Deerfield on March 20, 1 8 5 6 . H e attended the local school and later the Headin g S em in ar y in Abingdon, IL. He stayed on his father's f ar m unt i l h e was twenty. Then he left for Salina, KS, t o l earn t h e tra de of brick mason. He set up trade in Li ncol n Cente r , KS, f or three years, then went to Arkansa s t o wor k a s a clerk i n a cotton gin. After one seaso n at t his jo b, h e returned t o Deerfield. In 1887 he an d his fa mily mo ved t o Alliance. James continued to work as a mason contractor through o u t n o rtheastern Ohio. He had some concern for a reliab l e s upp l y of face and common brick, so when a source o f g oo d cla y w as found on the east side of Alliance, h e join e d a grou p o f local businessmen who wished to exp loit th i s find. I n 190 6 the Alliance Clay Product Compa ny was f or med wit h a capit alization of $50,000. Eight t hirty-foo t r ound dow ndraft kil ns were built. James assumed the management of this firm in 1910 af t e r t h e original general manager, Otis U. Walker, die d o f m alar ia . The manufacturing facilities were expande d i n 191 4/1 5 an d 1924. Among the first products was a r oad- pavin g bri ck ca lled "Speedway Block." To demonstrat e th e advan tage s of thi s product, the company paved a p ortio n of hig hwa y north o f Alliance. Although now macad amized , the ori gina l brick pa vement is still in use.
