MISC. TEST. P. 1624. #15168 - John Calvin Roper: "That I am 70 years of age and live in Cherokee Co., N. C. I claim my Indian descent through my mother; my father vas a white man.My mother always went by the name of Elizabeth Roper. She never married my father. My mother's father Roper claimed the Indian. My grandmother Roper was white. James Roper was my grandfather's name. I was never on any roll myself, nor was my mother. She was afraid to be enrolled for fear she would be sent off. I don't know whether her father was on any roll or not.I nor my mother nor her father ever received anything from the government. My mother was born and raised in Burt Co., N. C. Don't know when she was born but she died in 1895 in Cherokee Co. N. C. and was 85 when she died. I never lived with the Indians nor did my mother. I don't know whether my grandfather did or not, but don't suppose he did. I am recognized as white with some Indian blood.My mother raised me and recognized me as her son." SIGNED: John C. Jan 1844 Court Minutes: State v. William Walker son of Tom Bastardy on Elizabeth Roper. Attachment levied on land. Ordered and adjudged by the Court that publication has been made for six weeks in the Highland Messenger. It is further ordered and adjudged by the Court that the defendant William Walker pay into Court the sum of Sixty dollars for the support of Elizabeth Ropers bastard child and that the lands attached be advertised and sold to satisfy said Judgment and cost.
Burke County NC Heritage: p.451: Thomas Walker: The children of Thomas Walker and Elizabeth Huffman were: ...William who moved to Haywood Co. NC and is believed to have married an Indian.
Elizabeth Roper and her son John Roper also disappeared from Burke Co. after the death of James Roper in 1853. Presumably she is James's daughter.
