RUTLEDGE, Edward (brother of John Rutledge), a Delegate fr om South Carolina; born in Christ Church Parish, S.C., Nove mber 23, 1749; completed preparatory studies; studied law a t the Middle Temple in London; returned to South Carolina ; was admitted to the bar and commenced practice in 1773; M ember of the Continental Congress 1774-1777; a signer of th e Declaration of Independence; was a delegate to the firs t provincial congress in 1775 and to the second provincia l congress 1775-1776; appointed a member of the first boar d of war in June 1776; member of the general assembly in 17 78; elected a Member of the Continental Congress in 1779 bu t did not take his seat; captain in the Charleston Battalio n of Artillery in the Militia of South Carolina in the Revo lution; taken prisoner when the British captured Charlesto n May 12, 1780, imprisoned at St. Augustine until July 1781 , when he was exchanged; member of the State house of repre sentatives in 1782, 1786, 1788, and 1792; member of the Sta te constitutional convention in 1790 and was author of th e act abolishing the law of primogeniture in 1791; presiden tial elector in 1796 and voted for Thomas Jefferson, of Vir ginia, and Thomas Pinckney, of South Carolina; was tendere d the appointment of Associate Justice of the United State s Supreme Court in 1794 by President Washington, but did no t accept; elected Governor of South Carolina and served fro m December 6, 1798, until his death in Charleston, S.C., J anuary 23, 1800; interment in St. Philip's Churchyard. His third [sic] daughter Mary, while widow of a Dr. Evelei gh, married as a second wife Edward Rutledge, one of the si gners of the Declaration of Independence, & afterwards Gove rnor of the State of South Carolina. I knew her as "Grandm amma Rutledge", a very model of a lady, in beauty, in manne rs, in cultivation of mind, & in queenly liberality. She l ived to a good old age, and died several years after I wa s in the ministry. She had been a communicant for many yea rs, & was a sincere Christian, but having lived long amon g the rich, the titled & the fashionable, with her sister M rs. Templer, and among the public men of whom her husband w as one in this country, she thought more of such distinctio ns than was perhaps quite in keeping with her Christian pro fession. My Mother having spent most of the years of her g irlhood with this attractive relative I was always regarde d by her almost as a grandson. She often gave me money t o purchase books while at College, & while studying for th e ministry, and was frequently bestowing upon me substantia l tokens of her kindness to the end of her days, though fro m straitened means.

RUTLEDGE, Francis Huger, first bishop of Florida and 53r d in succession in the American episcopate, was born in Cha rleston, S.C., April 11, 1799; son of Hugh Rutledge, and gr andson of Dr. John Rutledge. He was graduated from Yale col lege, A.B., in 1820, and entered the General Theological se minary, New York city, class of 1823, but did not graduate . He was ordered deacon in 1823; advanced to the priesthood , Nov. 20, 1825; was rector of a church on Sullivan's Islan d, S.C., 1827–39; of Trinity church, St. Augustine, Fla., 1 839–45; and of St. John's, Tallahassee, Fla., 1845–51. He w as elected bishop of the newly-created diocese of Florida , and was consecrated Oct. 15, 1851, by Bishops Gadsden, El liott, and Cobbs. The honorary degree of M.A. was conferre d on him by the College of South Carolina, and that of S.T. D. by Hobart college. 1844. He died in Tallahassee, Fla., N ov. 6, 1866.
