Mary was the daughter of Richard Scammon who was proba b l y b orn in England and died in Dover NH abt 1697;he wa s s o n o f Richard the Emigrant and married to Prudence Wa ldr o n ab t 1697, daughter of William Waldron of Dover an d a n ie ce o f Major Richard Waldron. In the early life, R ichar d le arne d the trade of a gunsmith and perhaps it wa s thro ugh t his t hat he met Prudence since her cousin, Wi lliam , also w orke d at the trade. He did not work long a t the t rade as h e mov ed to Stratham, NH and secured owne rship o f a tract l ying o n the Eastern bank of the Exeter , or Squ amcott River . Thi s tract was known as the Shrews bery Pate nt and extend ed fro m the mouth of Wheelright' s Creek dow n the river nea rly 2 m iles to the north of Mo ore's Cree k and back into th e wood s some 3 miles in a so utheast dir ection. The claim t hus cov ered about two fift hs of the ar ea of the town. Tich ard foun d himself the ow ner of nearl y four thousand acre s of fores t and about 5 0 acres of sal tmarsh. Mary was the daughter of Richard Scammon who was proba b l y b orn in England and died in Dover NH abt 1697;he wa s s o n o f Richard the Emigrant and married to Prudence Wa ldr o n ab t 1697, daughter of William Waldron of Dover an d a n ie ce o f Major Richard Waldron. In the early life, R ichar d le arne d the trade of a gunsmith and perhaps it wa s thro ugh t his t hat he met Prudence since her cousin, Wi lliam , also w orke d at the trade. He did not work long a t the t rade as h e mov ed to Stratham, NH and secured owne rship o f a tract l ying o n the Eastern bank of the Exeter , or Squ amcott River . Thi s tract was known as the Shrews bery Pate nt and extend ed fro m the mouth of Wheelright' s Creek dow n the river nea rly 2 m iles to the north of Mo ore's Cree k and back into th e wood s some 3 miles in a so utheast dir ection. The claim t hus cov ered about two fift hs of the ar ea of the town. Tich ard foun d himself the ow ner of nearl y four thousand acre s of fores t and about 5 0 acres of sal tmarsh. Richard the Emigrant was the first Scammon to arrive i n A m e rica. The time of thier arrival in Boston is not ce rta i n bu t it was about 1630.
