General Notes for Child Francis Edward Wright
Enlisted, Confederate Army, prisiomer, deserted
[bobspu.ged]
Jean Grubb Downey secured a copy of Francis' military records from the National Archives in Washington, D.C.
According to his military records: Francis Wright volunteered for Confederate Army Service on July 22, 1861 at age 21. He was assigned to Co. I, 33rd Regiment of North Carolina Troops as a private. His enlistment is recorded at Pfafftown, NC which today is a small "burg" of about 900 population in Forsythe County, near and NNW of Winston-Salem. In December, 1862, he is listed by both the North Carolina and Army of the Potomac records as being taken prisoner at Fredericksburg. Shortly after, he is listed in a prisoner exchange and returned to his regiment. In February of 1863, he was promoted to sergeant. From July to October, 1863, he is listed as absent (sick in the hospital). No other reason was given as to his illness. The rest of 1863 and 1864 he remained on duty with the confederate forces. On February 19, 1865, North Carolina records show him as "deserted to the enemy". The Army of the Potomac records show him as a prisoner received by reason of "deserter from the enemy", Feb. 20, 1865. The last entry on his military file is a register from the Army of the Potomac of Prisoners received and disposed which simply says: "Date Feb. 22, 1865 Remarks: Rebel deserter" Because the war was essentially over at this time, he was probably held as a prisoner and then released after the formal surrender. We see him next in INDIANA in 1869 as he marries Susan Catherine MOCK who lost her first husband, Andrew MOCK, who as a member of the Union Army was captured on Sherman's march and died in a Confederate prison in Florence, SC. ************************************************************************** ****
After Francis' death, Susan re-applied for her pension based on Andrew Mock's service. She and three neighbors all swore under oath that Francis never mentioned any military service and that as far as they knew he had never been in the United States army or navy. This was essentially a true statement because he had served in the Confederate army. Mary Olive Griffith Winzenread, grand-daughter of Francis, reports that she remembers her mother, Alice Wright Griffith, telling that her father, Francis, made the statement that he had to swim the Yadkin River to get away. This report makes it clear that the family did know about his desertion.

Spurgeon Linen is out for an airing
HILLISBURG RESIDENTS ARE HERE FOR TRIAL
Woman Seeks Divorce on Grounds of Infidelity, and Failure to Provide.
More than one hyndred residents of Hillisburg were in circuit court circuit court today as witnesses and spectators at the Spurgeon divorce trial, which was conducted before Judge Contas today. There was an abundance of soiled family linen brought out for airing during the procedure with admissions from both sides.
Mrs. Sarah A Spurgeon was plaintiff in the action, seeking a divorce from Albert Spurgeon. She asserted that her husband is the father of an illegitimate child, and then made a similar admission concerning herself. Her complaint was based on grounds of cruelty and infidelity. The woman also declared Spurgeon did not contribute sufficiently toward her support.
The contest developed, it is said, over the question of alimony. Mrs. Spurgeon asks judgement for $90.
Mrs. Spurgeon said sh and Spurgeon had been married March 3, 1912. She first left her husband in the fall of 1913, and after remaining away from him six weeks, returned to his home. The final separation was April 14, 1915. Since then she has been working as been engaged as domestic in and about Kirklin, doing whatever work she is able to secure.
Was Divorced Before
She was formerly the wife of John Loucks, marrying Spurgeon after her Divorce from Loucks. She said when she consented to marry Spurgeon he told her of his son born out of wedlock, and assured her the boy would not live with them. However, he broke his word, and afterward took the boy into their home, she said. She admitted that she has a 10 year old child born five months after her marriage to Loucks.
Mrs. Spurgeon said that her husband was continually in a peevish conditionabout their home. She said he would remain out late every night, while they lived in Hillisburg. On cross examination she said he was out late as 8:30 or 9 o'clock and sometimes 10. During their last year together he was only in in four nights. She admitted he may have been working at a Hillisburg store during the nights.
That he would never go to church with her and refused to say his prayers were other contentions made by the woman. However, Spurgeon did join the church the night before she filed action for divorce, she said. At one time Spurgeon whipped her boy with a "plank", the woman said. On cross examination she described the plank as being about two feet long and as an inch thick. It may have been a pine board off a? store box, she said.
Met By a Woman
One night Spurgeon came home and said he had been stopped by Andrea Weaver who hugged and kissed him, Mrs. Spurgeon said. She did not believe the story at that time, and does not believe it now. Mrs. Spurgeon said that her spouse had also mentioned his friendship for Golda Wheat, another resident of Hillisburg.
The woman was not definite in her alegations of cruelty. She said Spurgeon was continuously angry, but was too nervous and too confused, she said, to specify any particular instance. In regard to his refusal to buy her a new coat, she admitted that he had told her he would have to first take an invoice of his finances to see if he could afford it.
During the cross examination, the Attorney Ryan for the defense, endeavored to secure an admission that Mrs. Spurgeon had been accumulating evidence for a year, preparing for a divorce trial. The woman, however, denied that she had been getting dates, incidents, etc. Mrs. Spurgeon denied that she intended to remarry Loucks after leaving Spurgeon the first time. She said she went to the postmistress in Hillisburg and left instructions not to give her husband...(apparently continued, but missing on this copy)
