The London of that time was as gay and alluring to y o u t h s as that profligate age could make it; vulgarity , vi c e a n d crime were countenanced and even encouraged . Und e r the s e circumstances the young man who chose hi s compa n y fr o m a persecuted and derided, but devoutly r eligiou s s ect , sh owed a strong and noble character.
Surrounded by oppression, and perhaps disowned by hi s f a t h er, it is not strange that such a spirit should w is h t o b re athe a freer air, should brave the dreaded oc ea n an d joi n t he Puritan settlers in the wilds of Ameri ca.
The facts given show the high standard he maintain e d i n h i s adopted home. With advantages of family and e du cati o n h e seems to have united a most liberal disrega r d of h i s ow n personal interests, to the advantage of t h e colon y , to wh ose service he devoted much of his lif e . The colo ni sts need ed just such men; and the many an d c onspicuou s tru sts place d in his hands show that he w as f aithful t o them.
He was a merchant nearly all his life, at times he m u s t h a ve been successful as numerous land transaction s a n d oth e r evidences indicate. But at his death, his e sta t e was ve r y small; he must have divided the most o f hi s pr operty am on g his children before his death, a s his c onvey ance to hi s s on Joseph would indicate. He d ied at t he hom e of his on ly d aughter. The only books me ntioned a mong hi s personal e ffect s, "a Bible in Qto" an d "Clark' s Martyro logie," ar e a comme ntary upon his lif e.
He lived in an age of wonderful changes, and his w a s a l o n g and eventful career. If it could be reviewe d b y us i n a l l its strong lights and shades, it would b e mo re inte rest in g than the most fascinating tale of fi ction.
He was the emigrant ancestor of all the Bartholome w s o f t h is family in the United States, and it is hope d t ha t know le dge of his force of character and sterlin g wor t h may enc our age some of his weaker descendants t o be mo r e worthy o f s o noble a sire.
Mrs. Anna is first mentioned in the records by tha t n a m e , in 1653, but was probably his only wife. She i s sup po s e d to have been the sister of Robert Lord,(*) a s th e lat te r , in a letter recorded, calls William Barth olome w, "br oth er ," and the relation could not have bee n throu gh Robe rt L ord 's wife, as the names and intermar riages o f her fa mil y ar e well known.
She may have also held that relation to Edward Bro w n o r h i s wife Faith, as Edward Brown in his will in 16 59 , al so m en tions his "brother Bartholomew."
William Bartholomew's house, in Ipswich, was between R o b e r t Lord's on the east and Edward Brown's on the west.

General Notes (Husband)
The name Bartholomew, Bartholomay, Bartholomae, or Bat h o l o mey is of English descent (but possibly relates b a c k t o th e Normans). In Elsdon C. Smith's book, Americ a n Fa mil y Name s, published in New York by Gramercy Publ is hin g Comp any (19 88), it states that Bartholomew (an d it s var iations ) mean s "descendant of Bartholomew (so n of T almai , furrow) . Ther e is also an Italian form, "B artolem es" me aning th e same th ings. In Scotland, the Mc Farlan e clan i s also ass ociated wi th the name "Bartholo mew" o r "Parlan" . MacFarlan e/McFarlan e means "son of Pa rlane ( Bartholomew ). Most like ly this nam e goes back t o Mooris h Spain, in i ts originatio n. However , my partic ular lin e is first reco rded in Englan d.
The Scottish McFarlane is said to be connected to th e E a r l s of Lennox (Caledonia by Chalmers) An ancestor o f t h e Mc Fa rlane family was the Saxon Arkil, son of Egfi th . Th is Ar kil , a Northumbrian chief fled to Scotland t o e scap e Willi am t he Conqueror. In Scotland he receive d cus tod y of the L enno x District, and was the founder o f th e fami ly bearin g tha t name. The son of Arkil, name d Alwy n, ha d a son Alwy n wh o left eight sons. Alwyn I I died i n 1224 . Two sons (Ma uldui n and Gilchrist) recei ved the l ands o f Arrochar, an d becam e the ancestors o f the MacFar lane cl an.
Bartholomew family history seems to say that they ca m e f r o m Normandy, yet no "Bartholomew" (or it's variati on s ) i s li sted in The Dictionary of Heraldry: Feudal Co at s o f Ar ms an d Pedigrees by Joseph Foster.
The relationship between the Scottish and Englis h i s n o t c lear. However, in Clan MacFarlane by Cascad e Publ ishi n g Com pany, Jedburgh, Scotland, it states, un der "Ma rFarl an e Asso ciated Names": BARTHOLOMEW. "Bartho lomew i s the o rig inal na me. Bartholomew is the Angliciz ed MacFa rlane. A lisa undre Ba rtholomew rendered homage i n Edinbur gh in 129 6. Jo hn Bartho lomei was a Glaswegia n landowner , in 1500.
In Fairbairn's Crests of the Families of Great Brit a i n a n d Ireland, it lists only one Bartholomew (from Ro ch es ter , E ngland). This arms is a demi-goat, ar. (gorge d w it h a c hapl et of laurel, vert). The arms adopted b y th e Bar tholom ews o f Westhill Manor has a rampant lio n as i ts arm s. Ther efore , the Rochester branch must b e farthe r from t he root s of th is family. In Crozier's G eneral Ar mory: A R egiste r of Ameri can Families Entitle d to Coat A rmor edite d by Wi lliam Armst rong Crozier, F. R.S. Baltimo re: Genealo gical Pu blishing Com pany, 1966 ; the crest o f William Bart holomew i s described a s "Arg ent, a chevo n engrailed, betw een thre e lions rampant , s able."
However, if we explore the name Martin with all its va r i o u s spellings, there is a connection. All the Scotti s h Ma rt in /Martyn/Martine/Martyre have the same rampan t li on. S inc e t he "Rampant Lion" is a symbol of Scotlan d, pe rhap s thi s poi nts us to the Scottish family, tha t is for eve r adde d to th e name "Bartholomew alias Marty n."
Records being what they are in this area, it will be d i f f i cult to piece this all together, but this is my pl a n ( t o tr ace the line back to the Scottish Martins). A n d sin c e the S cottish McFarlane is said to also be of " No rman d ec ent" thi s confirms family legend.
It seems that the Martin connection was well kno w n t o o u r Bartholomew ancestors. Now it is our job to r e- disc ove r i t. I don't think that George Welles Barthol ome w's r esea rc h took him to Scotland. I must go back an d fi nd hi s boo k a s well.
Three Bartholomews bearing the names John, Robert, a n d R i c hard were living in Warborough, Oxfordshire, Engl an d, a bo u t 1550; the latter two are known to have bee n bro thers , a n d it is supposed that the former also hel d th e same r elat io nship, from the fact that his son wa s mad e an overs eer i n R ichard's will, while Robert's se vera l and compete nt son s we re still living. They held l and i n their own na mes, we re ch urch wardens, etc.
They grequently used the term "alias Martyn" after Bar t h o l omew, but no light has been thrown on the reason o f i t s u se . It may have arisen from the fact that the y or t he ir f ore fathers had inherited an estate throug h a mater na l ance sto r of that name, and it may be tha t they use d th e name t o ho nor a The London of that time was as gay and alluring to y o u t h s as that profligate age could make it; vulgarity , vi c e a n d crime were countenanced and even encouraged .
General Notes for Child John Bartholomew
Married in Warborough, 6 November, 1552 to Margaret J o y e s , and was probably the John buried in Warborough , 1 4 No v em ber, 1578. He was made overseer of his uncl e Rich ard' s e sta te by the latter's will in 1577. He o r his so n Joh n pr obab ly assisted in the founding of Bar tholome w Chapel , Bur ford . His four sons apparently al l settle d in the n eighbo rin g towns of Oxford and Burfor d: Rowlan d in Oxford , and J ohn , Richard and William i n Burford.
