The news reached Milan last Friday that Mrs. Elecrta Emberton had quietly passed to the other shore at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Ed I. Harris, at her home at Flemington, Mo., on Thursday evening, Feb. 23, 1922. Mrs. Emberton had not been ill and even the immediate family could not see that the frail little body was growing thinner day by day. She was so energetic, so busy all the time, and her mind so clear even to the very last it was impossible for them to know that while her soul lingered with them, yet, like the belated pilgrim would at any moment brush from the mortal to the immorta. Electa VanWye was born July 8, 1839, in Columbus, Ohio and came to this county at an early day with her parents when Electa was only eighteen years old.
In Dec. 1861 she became the bride of Judge William H. Emberton and has lived in this county ever since. Ten chidren blessed the union, and all have "Passed over the great divide and out the line of our vision," except four. The living are: Mrs. Ed I. Harris, and George of Flemington, Mo., Miss Lucy and William (Bill), both of Green city.
The past seven winters Mrs. Emberton has spent with her daughter, Mrs. Harris. The little Harris children were devoted to "Grandma" and her chair and her place in their hearts will always be vacant to them. Mrs. Emberton was a devout member of the Christian church to which she had belonged many years. Her reamins were brought to Milan and taken to the residence of her step-daughter, Mrs. Nancy Wages, of near town, where the funeral services were held Sunday with Rev. Walker of Green City conducting same. Mrs. Emberton and Rev. Walker were old neighbors in Green City and he knew what a good woman, friend and neighbor she was. Her remains were tenderly laid to rest at the old EMBERTON GRAVEYARD four miles east of Milan, beside the husband and children who preceeded her to that better land several years ago. She was one of the pioneer women who are rapidly fading from the memory of this generation, soft of voice, industrious in those house-sifely duties that make real homes and not mere roosting places for the tired husband and children. Grandma Emberton after years of faithful service to her loved ones, has passed on but she will live forever in the memory of all who knew her.
