Subsequently (Liber 8, p. 246), the Court ordered that as notice had been published, the value fixed by the inquest should be approved and, as none of the other heirs appeared, Philip seller, son of said intestate appearing and being willing to take the real estate at the valuation fixed by the inquest, the Court so ordered, subject to the payment of the dividends of the other heirs." General Notes for Child George Sellers

At the time of his research, Patrick C. Smith was unable to prove a definite connection with the Pennsylvania Sellers line. However, he states: "There was a great migration southward from the Pennsylvania-Maryland area in the 1750's and 60's, just prior to the Revolutionary War, and a great part of the Piedmont sections of North and South Carolina was settled as a result of this movement south. George, Sr., may have been born in the North and brought to North Carolina as a child by his parents, or may have lived to maturity in the North and migrated southward on his own about the time of the War.

The Froneberger cemetery contains a number of old Sellers graves, indicating a close relationship between the two families from the earliest time they were both in that part of North Carolina. Sellers and Froneberger are both names of German or Dutch origin, and the two families could very well have moved southward together.

There are only three known children of George Sellers, Sr. and Susannah: (This list differs from other research): George, Jr. - born March 5, 1794 Phillip Felix Source: "Sellers-McLaughen" papers by Patrick C. Smith, 1971, rev. 1984

George Sellers Sr. was of age to have taken part in the Revolutionary War. My mother (Fay Sellers Smith) told me that her father's people took part in the Battle of Kings Mountain (1781). This could only have been George, Sr. and/or the Fronebergers.

Wife possibly Susannah?. A Susannah Sellers, died Jan 19 1843, aged 83 years is buried right next to George Sellers, tombstone reading: George Sellers died Dec 3rd 1839 aged 83 years. (See note below:) ******************** We know that Philip Sellers (1724-1808) of Pennsylvania had two sons who settled in North Carolina: George and John. [Because of the duplication of names, I will refer to this George and John as "George Sr." and "John Sr." and to George Sr.'s sons as George Jr. and John Jr. John Sr. apparently had no children, and in his will left all his property to two of George Sr.'s sons, John Jr. and Henry.

George Sellers (1756-1839) and his brother John migrated to North Carolina during the 1790s. They settled in what was then Lincoln County and became farmers. John seems to have had no children (he left his property to his nephews), but George and his wife Susanna Best had several children. Two of their sons were also named George and John and have been the source of much confusion. Gaston County Research Timeline

Bath was formed in 1696 from territories south of the Albemarle River. Bladen was formed in 1734. Anson was formed from Bladen in 1750. Mecklenburg was formed from Anson in 1762. Tryon was formed from Mecklenburg County in 1768. Tryon existed as a County until Lincoln and Rutherford were formed from Tryon County in1779. Cleveland was formed from Lincoln and Rutherford in 1841. Gaston was formed in 1846 from Lincoln and the most western edge of present Cleveland. Cleveland gained some territory from Gaston in 1921. The most southern part of Gaston had ancestors recorded in what is now Spartanburg, Cherokee and York Counties S.C.

Prior to surveys of 1764 and 1772, "much of the territory in the north-central and north-western part of South Carolina was considered to be North Carolina. The South Carolina counties of Marlboro, Chesterfield, Lancaster, York, Chester, Union, Spartanburg, Cherokee, and portions of Greenville, Laurens and Newberry are involved." (_Guide to South Carolina Research and Records_, by Brent Holcomb, Colombia, SC, 1991, p. 37) Much of Tryon County, NC became SC after the 1772 survey. In fact, the Tryon County courthouse had to be moved!

The land on which Cherryville now stands was originally known as "White Pine". During the last half of the 18th century, Scotch-Irish and German families from the Colony of Pennsylvania migrated south and settled into the "panhandle" section of Gaston County. Land grants by the king of England date back to 1768, and as early as 1792 Governor Samuel Ashe of North Carolina made original land grants in and around "White Pine". By this token Cherryville can be considered one of the oldest cities in Gaston County.

The village began to develop at a crossroads on Old Post Road. 'Ibis road served as a main thoroughfare between Salisbury, NC and Spartanburg, SC. In 1853, Henry Summit's Cross Roads Store, first store in the area, was established on this famous road.

Downtown Cherryville (Turn of the century) It was in 1862 that the Wilmington-Charlotte-Rutherford Railroad (later known as Carolina Central Railroad) reached White Pine. With the arrival of rail transportation, more homes and small businesses appeared in the village. On November 2, 1865, near the close of the Civil War, the name White Pine was changed to Cherryville.

"Settled in North Carolina." Source: "Sellers Family of Pennsylvania and Allied Families" by Edwin Jaquett Sellers, Philadelphia, 1925

The Will of a John Sellers is recorded in Lincoln County, North Carolina (Will File #5). It says "I give and bequeath unto my brother's sons, that is my brother George Sellers' sons John and Henry Sellers all my real and personal estate" etc. The will is signed January 24, 1814. This John and his brother George could be the John and George, sons of Phillip (Heinrich) Soller (Sellers) who were in North Carolina at the time of Phillip's death in Pennsylvania in 1769. If so, this would establish that two of the immigrant Phillip's sons settled in the same part of North Carolina to which our line has been traced.

General Notes for Child Abraham Sellers

In the information I have there is the contents of a letter from Abraham Sellers to his son Cornelius Sellers, dated Dec. 10, 1827:

"The Catalogue you wish me to give you I fear will not be very correct in every respect, but, as far as my memory serves me, I will give it. My grandfather, Philip Henry Soller was born in Germany in a town called Weinheim near the City of Manheim on the Bergstrasse in the Palatinate. As near as I can trace it, about 97 years ago he left his native country with a wife and four children and came to Philadelphia, from there he went to Skippack and stayed a short time after which he bought a tract of land of 200 acres on the Branch about one mile below where Thomas Sellers now lives. There he lived until his death. He died at the age of sixty-five, (this age is an error) leaving a wife and ten children, 7 sons and three daughters. The names of his sons were Philip, Leonard, Philip Henry, John (who was your grandfather), Paul, Peter and Jacob. The daughters were Elizabeth, Magdalena and Margaret. My father settled in Hilltown on the farm where Frederick Fluck now lives and there he died at the age of fifty-five, leaving Mother, three sons and one daughter. Two daughters and one son died in infancy, being seven in all. The names were Abraham, Samuel, John and Elizabeth. The other three were two Hannahs and Amos.
"As to my mother's family I know but little, being all dead before my time. Her father's name was William Johnson. I think he came from Holland. He lived in Skippack, a respectable farmer. Your grandfather Bodder came from "Dutch Country." When he married he settled in Hilltown. He died at the age of 73 leaving a wife and four children, two sons and two daughters, their names being Jacob, John, Sophia and Catherine. Your grandmother Bodder's maiden name was Regina Ditor (or Detor), likewise from Germany."
signed by Abraham Sellers

>From the information in the letter, I carefully pieced together and came up with the following, see if you agree:

John Sellers married Miss Johnson, together they had:
Abraham Sellers, Samuel Sellers, John Sellers, Elizabeth Sellers,
Hannah (a) Sellers, Hannah (b) Sellers, Amos Sellers (these three died
as infants)

Abraham Sellers and Miss Bodder had
Cornelius Sellers (Abraham is Cornelius' father)

Mr. Bodder and Regina Ditor had
Miss Bodder (Cornelius' other Grandparents? "your
Grandfather Bodder" "your Grandmother
Bodder's maiden name...")

I have not tried to verify my conclusion yet.

I will post this to the Sellers' List as well, maybe someone else can use it to verify something as well. I hope you do not mind and I apologize for not getting back to you sooner.

General Notes (Husband)

I have found very little definite data on Daniel Sellers, except that he was a native of the Cherryville, NC area, where his father and grandfather lived. The 1850 census of Cleveland Co., NC, lists him as age 18, which would date his birth about 1832.

Daniel is recorded in Moore's Roster of North Carolina Confederate Veterans as a Private in Co. C, Fifty-Fifth Regiment. He enlisted March 29, 1862, in Cleveland County, NC, and was given a disability discharge in December 1863. My mother's (Fay Sellers Smith) certificate of membership in the United Daughters of the Confederacy states that he served in Co. H., Thirty-Seventh NC Regiment.

Apparently Daniel died sometime in 1864, possibly as a result of war wounds. It is very likely that he is buried somewhere in the general area where he was born. During the War (Civil War) years, it was difficult to obtain permanent grave markers, and his grave may have gone unmarked as so many others did at that time.

General Notes (Wife)

After the death of her first husband, Robert Daniel Sellers, Nancy Elizabeth Sparrow Sellers, married again to John J. Howell, and by that marriage there were ten children. At the Sparrow family reunion at Sparrow Springs, NC, in August, 1962, I met Mrs. Flossie Alice Howell Johnston, who was the youngest of these ten children, and in her late 70's at the time. Mrs. Johnston was thus a half-sister of Patrick Henry Sellers. She gave me a list of the ten Howell children, of which Charles was the oldest. He was born June 22, 1866, which means that Nancy Elizabeth, widow of Daniel Sellers, must have married Howell sometime in 1865. This would indicate that Daniel Sellers died probably in 1864. Unfortunately, Mrs. Johnston knew almost nothing about Daniel Sellers, her mother's first husband.

General Notes for Child Patrick Henry Sellers

Patrick Henry Sellers was the only child of DANIEL SELLERS and NANCY ELIZABETH SPARROW SELLERS. His father died either before or very soon after he was born. His mother, Nancy Elizabeth, married again to John J. Howell, evidently of the Sparrow Springs community, east of Kings Mountain, NC. For some unknown reason, Patrick Henry was raised, from some early time of his life, by one of the Mauney families in the Kings Mountain area. Just what the circumstances were, accounting for his not having been kept by his mother, Nancy Elizabeth, after her marriage to Howell, I have never heard mentioned. The Mauney name is prominent in and around Kings Mountain.

At some point in his early life he began work as a telegraph operator with the Southern Railroad, very likely in Kings Mountain. He remained with the Southern, and at times the Seaboard Railway, in varying capacities all his life.

During his career with the railroads, the family moved a number of times, and lived for varying periods in Atlanta, GA; Athens, GA; Central, SC; Greenville, SC; and Easley, SC. I do not know where their married life began.
