PETER TURNEY'S 1st TENNESSEE REGIMENT COMPANY I
Company I was formed at Winchester for a period of twelve months from men in Coffee County. It was enrolled in April 1861 and joined the Regiment shortly thereafter and mustered into Confederate service at Lynchburg, VA, on 8 May 1861. Its nickname was "The Tullahoma Guards" or "Cowan Guards" Another nickname said to be "Jo Lane Company." The original organization was: Captain, Joseph HOLDER; 1st Ltn., James W. JACKSON; 2nd Ltn., Enoch G. STEWART; 3rd Ltn., Henry J. HAWKINS; 1st Sgt., Daniel Crawford KEITH; 2nd Sgt., Charles HOFMAN; 3rd Sgt, Edward A. JACKSON; Fourth Sergeant, Absolom F. WILLIAMS; 1st Cpl., Joseph M. HAWKINS; 2nd Cpl., George W. BOWERS; 3rd Cpl., Joseph M. HOLDER; 4th Cpl., Francis M. BOWERS.
SKIDMORE, Andrew Jackson. Pvt. He was b. 2 Nov 1839, Franklin Co., d. 14 Dec. 1932; m. (1) Sarah jane SELLS; m. (2) Emaline TERRY. He was s/o William S. SKIDMORE and Sarah KEITH. ~ *He was 5'8", sallow complexion, grey eyes, dark hair, schoolteacher. Enrolled 7 Oct 61 at Cowan, aged 22; discharged by reason of disability on 4 Aug 62. He applied for pension from Franklin Co. after 1891, #14546.* -------------------------------------------------------------------------- ----- ABOUT THE PETER TURNEY REGIMENT After the Feb. 1861 secession meeting, Peter TURNEY organized a company in Winchester, which was later to become "C" Company. Four other companies from Franklin, Lincoln, Coffee and Grundy counties were formed after the fall of Fort Sumter. TURNEY'S 1st was organized at Winchester, TN, 21 Apr. 1861 and was mustered into service at Lynchburg, VA, 8 May 1861. On 17 May, they traveled by rail to Richmond where they were drilled by the cadets from the Virginia Military Institute. On June 1, they moved to Harper's Ferry and in July to the locale of Manassas where they were a part of the 3rd Brigade, JOHNSTON'S Division. Organization of the Tennessee Brigade was announced on 8 Mar. 1862. The third Tennessee regiment in this brigade was always the First Tennessee Regiment, but not always the same First. Until Feb., 1862 MANEY'S First Tennessee Volunteers was in the brigade, but when it was ordered back to Tennessee, it was succeeded by TURNEY'S 1st Confederate Infantry sometimes called the 1st Tennessee Regiment, Provisional Army, CSA. The Battle of Fredricksburg was fought in Dec. 1862. W.A. MILES sent an account of the wounded and killed to the newspaper. The company surrendered at Appomattox Courthouse 9 Apr. 1865. Isham G. HARRIS, formerly of Franklin County, was Governor of the State during the first part of the war (3 Nov. 1857-3 Mar. 1862) and Peter TURNEY served as Governor of the State of Tennessee from 16 Jan. 1893 to 21 Jan. 1897.

Mary Jane (Jennie) Skidmore Waldman (your ggrandmother) was my father's step-sister. AJ was married twice and Jennie was the oldest child from the first marriage. Her daughter, Lucille and her son Murray (both now deceased), helped me considerably in gather info regarding the Waldman offspring. Jennie and her ancestry are on the CD. The remainder of the Waldman info I have is in a genealogy program that I can print out for you and send along with the CD if you would like to have it.
Your name was not among the ancestors given to my by Lucille (in her 90s when she died) and Murray.
AJs old farm is still intact here on Skidmore Lane in Franklin County, about three miles south of Winchester. It is now owned by a cousin (Klinton Arnold) who does not live here and will not part with it - I have asked to buy it from him several times. When I moved back to Winchester seven years ago I would have build a house on the old farm but could not get him to sell me any part of it.
The CD is $75 and a check is fine. We discontinued taking credit cards when they ceased to be used very much. Your ancestry is traced back to the 1550s in England on the CD. We are now in the process of using DNA to take us further back - samples from six different male lines of Skidmores are no in a lab in Houston. Some of these lines go back to the Norman Conquest (1066) and the Domesday Book in 1086. If the DNA shows a relation in all of these male lines, we will all go back to 1086. One researcher thinks he has back to the Danes who conquered the Normans - but his work includes a lot of conjecture.
There are no DAR eligible Skidmore ancestors of our line. (Some of their property was confiscated in NC indicating they were Tories.) Lucille tried for years without success to get in on the Skidmores. She finally went in on another line. Your Aunt might check Lucille's application form as a possible route of entry.
I notice that you are in MA. My first wife (died 1971) was from Concord and I have visited there often over the years. I still come up that way occasionally.
