General Notes for Child Hermann Sendelbeck
[Downing.ged]
Hermann Sendelbeck was the half brother of Karl Sendelbeck (same father, different mothers). He was a pilot in the Luftwaffe (1936 to 1945), and in World War II became a prisoner of war in a British camp in North Holland by Canadian soldiers camped in Belgium. He was a manager at Fichtel & Sachs industries after the war, and visited us in 1973 in Detroit. Hermann was just delightful; we thought of him often.

SS No: 364-05-7741 The following is from the biographical information prepared by Gretel Stiles:
"Born October 4, 1895, in Nurnberg, Germany, of Christoph and Margrete Sendelbeck. Parents sent Karl to higher school (college) to be a teacher, but after a while rebelled and left to study art -- inspired by his half brother Friedrich who was an artist. Left home to become a house painter and decorator (his lifetime profession) at the age of 17. Was also very musical and played the piano for silent films in the motion picture theater in Altdorf. Had his own orchestra and played many insturments such as the trumpet, althorn, and flute. Entered World War I when 20 years old and was in the Infantry for four years on the front lines. Received shrapnel through leg and hospitalized for one year. Married Margrete Stocker at 21 while on leave and has two children. Persuaded wife to come to America in 1923 to Detroit, Michigan." Notes of RAD: I spent much of my time in my childhood with these grandparents in their home at 12316 Sorrento, Detroit, MI. That location is no a vacant lot. They had a single frame home with no basement. An oil-fired furnace sat in the living room. The front yard had a variety of fruit trees, m favorite being the cherry tree. Along the north boundary out to the street wer superb purple grape vines, from which grandmother made grape jelly stored in mason jars, sealed on top with wax. Karl Sendelbeck was about 5-8 and perhaps 200 pounds; was a wonderful grandfather, and warmly remembered.
