Samuel and his wife, Phoebe, were among the earliest s e t t l er of the Evans, Erie County, New York area. They w e r e me mb ers of The First Congregational Church of Evan s w he re h e an d his wife are buried. Very little else i s kno w n abou t him . He was probably a farmer, raising c rop s o f berries , grap es, and vegetables as well as live stoc k. T he Indian s fro m a local reservation helped hi m harve st hi s crops.

Hiram Maltbie isn't spoken of much in the family. I bel i e v e in his latter years he suffered from "Senile Dement i a " no w known as alzheimers disease.
