Hi, Kathy, I have not been very active at searching for my gggrandfather Thomas Shanley's heritage of late. So, I missed your letter on this page. Presently, I will give you some dates and names. Later I will look up some material that may document my present statements more securely. If you are beginning with genealogical work, may I suggest that you document any date that anyone gives you. When I started my Shanley line, I knew that my mother was a Shanley, that her father was born in Wisconsin -- name Uria Thomas Shanley, and that her grandfather's name was William A. Shanley. But because it is confusing to give a person some material in reverse in the manner that one discovers it, I will start with the earliest Shanley whom I can document as part of my line. The fact that I lived in Wisconsin for a number of years facilitated my work. I had access to much material which I miss in my present home. On the other hand, I interviewed my Aunt Olive Shanley and her husband Robert Calkins at one time before they died. The interview was for the specific purpose of documentation of what I might find along the way. Documentation is so important. My mother was the youngest of her family. Aunt Olive was older. She remembered her grandfather whereas my mother did not. I knew from Aunt Olive's remarks that my great grandfather was William Arthur Shanley. He married Eliza Calley (Caley, Kaly, etc. from documents). It was from Aunt Olive that I learned that my great grandfather William A. Shanley was 15 years old when his father packed up the entire family and went to look for gold in California. You could miss this fact if you were working only with U.S.Censuses. My grandfather Uria Thomas Shanley was a great story teller. I and my cousins were great listeners. So from him I gained many wonderful facts and activities about my ancestors. My mother told me that my grandfather was born in Wisconsin. She told that the family traveled by covered wagon to Nebraska, then to Kansas. Part of the family remained in Kansas, whereas my grandfather and his brothers took up land in Oklahoma when the Indian Territory was separated from Western Oklahoma. Therefore, most of William Arther Shanley I's line settled in Oklahoma Territory. This was after Thomas Shanley, who married Mahala Inghram as his second wife, had died. No one of this line knew who or where William A Shanley I's father was or where he came from. When I moved to Wisconsin I had learned that this Shanley family had settled in Grant county, Wisconsin, before it was Wisconsin. It was part of Michigan territory. In Wisconsin I found a library that had the late 19th century Grant County, Wisconsin, history (two editions). There were many references to Thomas Shanley in it. I found that he had arrived in Wisconsin between 1826 to 1828/9 where he prospected for ore (lead in Wisconsin). These two histories were invaluable. 1. I found that Thomas Shanley had formed a deep friendship with another prospector by the name of Henry W. Hodges. They settled first on the river between Iowa and Wisconsin. Then the Black Hawk Indian uprising forced them to move from the river to the place that came to be known as Hurricane Grove. Both were to be in Grant County, Wisconsin, of a later date. I could not link him directly to my line, although I had learned that they went to California in the gold rush when William A Shanley was around 15 years old, until I found the names of the family in the 1850 US Census for Grant County, Wisconsin. Since then, I found Thomas Shanley was elected to the provisional government of Wisconsin Territory around the time he married, evidently for a second time. I do not know what happened to his first wife, but from his will (which you can find in the Grant County, Wis., Genealogical library in Platteville) that he had a Mary Cole who was his daughter from a first marriage. You can find his 1830 U.S.Census (no names) in the Illinois group, because he was probably there when the census was taken. There is where the miners who wanted to search for ore in Wisconsin registered for mining permits. I finally found names and some dates in the 1850 censuses in Wisconsin. I found the names of his children there. I found references in the hisories of Grant county to the public offices which he and Henry Hodges held. They were in Wisconsin when, as I stated, the Black Hawk Indian War occurred. They moved inland to Hurricane Grove at that time. There they built that large two room cabin. It served as a stopping point for imigrants, for circuit rider preachers' meetings, and for both Shanley's and Hodges' families. In the Wisconsin State Historical Library in Madison, I found state censuses. I found tax records in Platteville, where the Grant County Wisconsin tax records and other records such as marriage records are kept. Then in 1850 U.S.Census for Grant County, Mo, I found the names of the siblings of William A Shanley. The family did not go to California until around 1853. There are no records that I have found yet coming out of California to tell me where they worked for ore. Those who went to California with Thomas and Mahala Shanley were: William Arthur Shanley, b. 17 December 1838, So. Lancaster twp, Grant Co., Wisconsin. ( he told his granddaughter Olive Shanley that he was about 15 when he left Wisconsin for California with his entire family.) James M. Shanley, b. ca. 1840. Hamilton H. Shanley b. ca. 1841. Zadok or Zadock? Shanley, b. 1844/1845 John D Shanley, b. 1848 Sarah Shanley, b. ca. 1844 (a shadowy figure who is mentioned in Thomas Shanley's will. She married before they left for California and she stayed in California with a miner from Wisconsin. They married and I was given some information about her before I saw her name mentioned in Thomas will in Grant Co., Wisconsin. And, as I discovered later, Thomas had had a daughter named Mary by a former marriage, who went with them to California. Mahala was considerably younger than he. I also found more specific facts about them after they returned from California. However, enough for this time. I am very interested in where Thomas Shanley came from. I found in his 1850 U. S. Census that he was born in South Carolina in 1802, rather than 1800. I think he also had a more exact date for himself and for Mahala "Hattie" on the joint tombstone, which is a needle shape. It is in the Hurricane Cemetery in South Lancaster Township, Grant County, Wisconsin. I almost forgot to say that I think Mahala died in childbirth or shortly before the family reached Wisconsin on their return trip from the gold fields. Her last child was a girl who was named Arzella. Thomas seems to have deeply loved his second wife, Mahala Inghram. And upon return he tried to keep his family together as he raised this tiny daughter. Sarah remained in California, and his sons began to marry back in Wisconsin. My grandfather married Eliza C Caley (calley, kaley, kaly, and I may have missed a few mispellings in records of various sorts). I will try to continue this saga at a later date if you are interested. Wanda Cole P.S. Thomas Shanley and Mahala Inghram Shanley were my gr gr grandparents.
