General Notes (Husband)



 On Sept. 13, 1862, Jeptha, called "Jep," enlisted in the same companyin which his two younger brothers had previously enlisted. At the timehe was 32 and had a wife and two children. The Jeptha Shedd familylived in Lumpkin County until 1891 or shortly thereafter, at whichtime they and other Shedds and Healans in Lumpkin moved to JacksonCounty, GA.

General Notes (Husband)



 First of the James Shed descendants to migrate to Georgia. The firstrecord of him in Georgia is the 1827 land lottery, which shows him asa fortunate drawer and a resident of Rabun County, GA. Rabun is in theextreme northeast corner of the state and is separated from OconeeCounty, SC, by the Chattooga River. Since a person had to reside inGeorgia for a year for his name to be on the lottery list, it islikely that John Shed moved from South Carolina to Georgia in 1826. Heowned land in Rabun County as early as 1822. Census records show thathis seventh child was born in South Carolina in 1825

The 1827 land lottery shows John Shed as a soldier entitled to twodraws. It is likely that he served in the War of 1812 with his youngerbrother, James. We have a good deal of information about James in theWar of 1812 from his pension records, but John died too early toreceive a pension as a veteran of the War of 1812.

John Shed is shown as a family head in the 1820 census of PendletonDistrict, SC, and in the 1830 and 1840 censuses of Rabun County, GA.There is no record of John or any other member of his family in RabunCounty after 1840. The 1850 census of Paulding County, GA, listsseveral members of the John Shed family but not him. Presumably hedied prior to 1850. Paulding County (seat Dallas) is northwest ofAtlanta in the western part of the state.
