Took part in over 20 battles and skirmishes--Antietam, Fredericksburg, Cold Harbor and Petersburg.

Twenty years later, "his body was taken up for the removing of his monument unto a more convenient place", (in the church), "was found as firm and entire as if it had been new buried, and as well endured to be wound in a new sheet, having only a black little bruise on top of the great toe, caused by the pressure of his first coffin".
