He was with the wagons that made the first start from the Winter Quarters for the Rocky Mountains on April 5, 1847. Returning to Winter Quarters for conference, he joined the camp at the Elkhorn River again on April 7, 1847. He described the artillery of the camp as consisting of one cannon, rigged up like a wagon, with a span of horses and a grain box.
