!The following is a copy of a letter sent to Dale Frederick concerning the Smith family reunion in Sept. 1978. The author Loyd L. Smith, I think. Much of the Archibald and Daniel Smith families history came from this letter.
"Many of these (the Daniel Smith family) went to Oklahoma soon after the Cheyenne-Arapaho opening and were able to get claims in Washita county, North of Gotebo. According to my information Samuel was the first to go. The Squires went soon, 1895 or 1896. The Sullins went in 1897, Isaac in 1900 (he settled in Sentinel while the others were north of Gotebo). These too have been a prolific lot and are scattered throughout the land. I know of none of them that have "disgraced" the good nome. I do not know when Henry went, or if he first settled at Cold Springs.
There are many "gaps" in this history that I would like to see filled, as no doubt you would. If we all get together in Sept. at the reunion, maybe we can fill some of them. ...
P.O. Box No. 384 Allen, Tx. 75002 Smith 50th Reunion held Sept. 1978 at Cordell, OK. First was held at Cold Springs by Emory Smith in 1929 Lige and Susan Rossevelt, (TX?) Washington: John and Violet Wolffe, Bud and Joy Fitzsimmons, and Uncle Henry and Aunt Martha Smith. All descendants of Johathan Smith, who went to Ore. in 1865 and later to Washington. Violet and Joy have done work on the family tree. Loyd L. Smith son of Lewis, of Andrew, of Daniel of Archibald.
According to information we have: Archibald Smith moved from Ohio Coshockton Co. to Indiana (Muncie) in 1834. He moved on to Missouri in 1839 with some of the family settling over in Iowa. They were in Mercer Co. on the Iowa line, near Princeton. Jonathan B. went to Ore. in 1865--later to Wash. south of Spokane Samuel went to Ore. about 1866. Daniel went, with most of his children, to TX. in 1873 rented land west of Whitesboro and made crops in 1874 and moved to Wise Co., where most of them bought land in fall of 1874. This land was bought for $1.25 per acre with $15. 00 being the down payment on a quarter section--payments were $15.00 per year, and interest was 10%. In the trip from Missouri, they started to Kansas, thinking they could get land near Ft. Scott--they couldn't and went on to TX. across the Indian Territory, following the old TX. Trail, approximately the route of the Katy Railroad, which was finished about the time they made this trip. They crossed the Red River at Dennison.
Though several have spent much time looking for information so far as I know no one knows who Archibald's father was, not how he got from Virginia to Ohio--When did the family go to Virginia? Who were they?" [myclean.FTW]
