KHOSROW PARVIZ (PERSIAN: "KHOSROW THE VICTORIOUS") l a t e S a sanian king of Persia (reigned 590-628), under wh o m t he e mp ire achieved its greatest expansion. Defeate d a t la s t i n a war with the Byzantines, he was depose d i n a pala c e rev olution and executed.

The son of Hormizd IV, Khosrow was proclaimed kin g i n A D 5 9 0 in turbulent times. Hormizd's general, Bahr am C hubi n, a ft er his defeat by the Byzantine army at La zica , ha d bee n ope nly insulted by the king. Khosrow' s pursuers were hel d off by th e milita ry tactic s of his unc le Bindoe, unti l eventuall y the Byza ntine empe ror Maurice p rovided Kho srow with fo rces to def eat his adv ersary. Bahra m Chubi n was subseque ntly assassi nated.
Insecure and unpopular, Khosrow now eliminated those co n n e c ted with his father's murder, including Bindoe, o n wh o s e su pport he had relied. Although he retained a b odygu a r d of By zantine legionaries, he resented the Byza ntin e pr es ence i n Armenia, which he had been forced t o cede . A second invasion of Mesopotamia, by Khosrow's ablest g e n e r al, Shahrbaraz, took place in 613. Damascus was ta k e n i n th at year, and in 614 Jerusalem fell.
