On 6 April 1640 Plymouth Colony granted to "William Bas s e t of Duxburrow" one hundred acres of upland with "mead o w co nvenient" [PCR 1:144, 146].
On 3 June 1652 William Bassett of Duxbury gave to "hi s s o n-in-law Leiftenant Perigrine White" forty acres of u pla n d with the meadow adjoining [MD 1:96, citing PCLR 2:1 :5] . BIRTH: By about 1600, assuming that Elizabeth was his fi r s t wife. DEATH: Bridgewater between 3 April 1667 (date of will ) a n d 12 May 1667 (date of inventory). (The claim that Wi lli a m Bassett died on 4 April 1667 derives from a peculia r mi sr eading of the probate documents, in which the dat e of pr oba te is taken as 5 April rather than 5 June, an d the assu mpti on is made that the death must have occurre d between t he th ird and the fifth.) MARRIAGE: (1) By 1623 (and probably by 1621) Elizabeth __ _ _ _, probably also a passenger on the Fortune in 1621; sh e a pp ears in no record after 1627, and may have died soo n aft e r the birth of the last child about 1634, or she ma y hav e l ived until just before William Bassett married hi s seco nd w ife. (2) After 1651 and before 12 December 1664 Mary (Tilde n ) L apham, daughter of Nathaniel Tilden, widow of Thoma s La pha m [see TIMOTHY HATHERLEY]; she was living at Bridg ewate r a s late as 28 March 1690 [Bassett Gen 6, citing Br idTR 1 :320 ]. CHILDREN: i WILLIAM, b. Plymouth about 1624; m. by about 1652 M a r y Rainsford, daughter of EDWARD RAINSFORD [NEHGR 139:29 9]. ii ELIZABETH, b. Plymouth about 1626; m. Sandwich 8 N o v ember 1648 Thomas Burgess [PCR 8:6], from whom she wa s di vo rced on 10 June 1661 [PCR 3:221]. iii SARAH, b. Plymouth say 1628; m. by 6 March 1 6 4 8/9 Peregrine White, son of WILLIAM WHITE [PCR 2:183 ; M F 1: 101-03]. iv NATHANIEL, b. say 1630; m. about 1661 Dorcas Joyc e , d aughter of John Joyce [TAG 43:3-5]. v JOSEPH, b. say 1632; m. (l)by about 1660 Mary _____ ( s aid to be his stepsister Mary Lapham, daughter of Thom a s La pham [see NEHGR 115:851); m. (2) Hingham 16 Octobe r 16 77 Ma rtha Hobart [NEHGR 121:200]. vi RUTH, b. say 1634; m. (1) by 1655 John Sprague, s o n o f FRANCIS SPRAGUE [TAG 41:178-81, citing PCR 6:109 f o r evid ence of marriage]; she m. (2) _____ Thomas [TAG 41 :1 79; Rob ert S. Wakefield suggests that this was John Tho ma s of Mars hfield, who died before 12 January 1691/2, an d wh ose firs t wife had died 2 January 1682/3].
COMMENTS: In 1611 a William Bassett, formerly of Sandwi c h i n England, widower of Cecily Light, was twice betroth e d a t Leiden in Holland. His first bride-to-be died, bu t h e suc ceeded the second time. Some have held that thi s wa s the ma n who came to Plymouth, but this seems unlike ly gi ven the t en-year gap before the arrival in Plymout h in 162 1, and th e lack of evidence for children of the P lymouth m an born be fore that date, assuming that he had b een marrie d at leas t twice before. It is also possible th at the Will iam Basset t of Leiden in 161 1 was the fathe r of the immig rant to Ply mouth in 1621, but there is no e vidence directl y favoring t his hypothesis. (See discussio n in Stratton 24 2-43.) If th e two-acre grant to William B assett in 1623 wa s for Willia m and his wife Elizabeth, th en the first chil d would not ha ve been born until 1624, t hree years after W illiam's arriva l in Plymouth. It is pos sible (though not l ikely) that th e marriage took place i n Plymouth, and Eliza beth came on th e Fortune as a singl e woman.
Savage has misread the 1627 Plymouth cattle division, s o m ehow including daughter Sarah Bassett in this list, wh e n i n fact only two children, William and Elizabeth, wer e i nclu ded. Sarah must have been born soon after 1627, ho weve r, t o have married by the end of 1648.
Pope claims that William Bassett resided at Sandwic h i n 1 650, but this would be the son of the same name.
Munsey-Hopkins (p. 67) lists a "probable" seventh chi l d , a daughter Jane who married a Thomas Gilbert. This mu s t b e a simple error in which "Rossiter" was misread fo r "B asse tt," as there was a Thomas Gilbert of Taunton wh o marr ied J ane Rossiter.
Various secondary sources claim that William Bassett vo l u nteered for service in the Pequot War, and in the ind e x t o the first volume of published Plymouth Colony recor d s h e is listed for the page on which such volunteers app ea r, b ut he does not actually appear in the list [PCR 1:6 1] ; a nu mber of the index entries for William Bassett act ual ly see m to be for William Paddy.
On 6 March 1648/9 William Bassett was fined 5s. "fo r n o t mending of guns in seasonable time," and on 9 Jun e 165 3 h e was fined 10s. "for neglecting to publish and m ake kn ow n an order directed to him from the council of wa r, proh ibi ting provisions for being transported out of th e colony " [P CR 2:137, 3:36]. On 9 August 1655 and 10Jun e 1661 th e colon y treasurer received payment of fines b y William Ba ssett [P CR 3:93, 8:104].

was probably also a passenger on the "Fortune" in 1621 ; s h e appears in no record after 1627, and may have die d soo n a fter the birth of the last child about 1634, or s he ma y hav e lived until just before William Bassett marri ed hi s secon d wife.
