Spurgeon Linen is out for an airing
HILLISBURG RESIDENTS ARE HERE FOR TRIAL
Woman Seeks Divorce on Grounds of Infidelity, and Failure to Provide.
More than one hyndred residents of Hillisburg were in circuit court circuit court today as witnesses and spectators at the Spurgeon divorce trial, which was conducted before Judge Contas today. There was an abundance of soiled family linen brought out for airing during the procedure with admissions from both sides.
Mrs. Sarah A Spurgeon was plaintiff in the action, seeking a divorce from Albert Spurgeon. She asserted that her husband is the father of an illegitimate child, and then made a similar admission concerning herself. Her complaint was based on grounds of cruelty and infidelity. The woman also declared Spurgeon did not contribute sufficiently toward her support.
The contest developed, it is said, over the question of alimony. Mrs. Spurgeon asks judgement for $90.
Mrs. Spurgeon said sh and Spurgeon had been married March 3, 1912. She first left her husband in the fall of 1913, and after remaining away from him six weeks, returned to his home. The final separation was April 14, 1915. Since then she has been working as been engaged as domestic in and about Kirklin, doing whatever work she is able to secure.
Was Divorced Before
She was formerly the wife of John Loucks, marrying Spurgeon after her Divorce from Loucks. She said when she consented to marry Spurgeon he told her of his son born out of wedlock, and assured her the boy would not live with them. However, he broke his word, and afterward took the boy into their home, she said. She admitted that she has a 10 year old child born five months after her marriage to Loucks.
Mrs. Spurgeon said that her husband was continually in a peevish conditionabout their home. She said he would remain out late every night, while they lived in Hillisburg. On cross examination she said he was out late as 8:30 or 9 o'clock and sometimes 10. During their last year together he was only in in four nights. She admitted he may have been working at a Hillisburg store during the nights.
That he would never go to church with her and refused to say his prayers were other contentions made by the woman. However, Spurgeon did join the church the night before she filed action for divorce, she said. At one time Spurgeon whipped her boy with a "plank", the woman said. On cross examination she described the plank as being about two feet long and as an inch thick. It may have been a pine board off a? store box, she said.
Met By a Woman
One night Spurgeon came home and said he had been stopped by Andrea Weaver who hugged and kissed him, Mrs. Spurgeon said. She did not believe the story at that time, and does not believe it now. Mrs. Spurgeon said that her spouse had also mentioned his friendship for Golda Wheat, another resident of Hillisburg.
The woman was not definite in her alegations of cruelty. She said Spurgeon was continuously angry, but was too nervous and too confused, she said, to specify any particular instance. In regard to his refusal to buy her a new coat, she admitted that he had told her he would have to first take an invoice of his finances to see if he could afford it.
During the cross examination, the Attorney Ryan for the defense, endeavored to secure an admission that Mrs. Spurgeon had been accumulating evidence for a year, preparing for a divorce trial. The woman, however, denied that she had been getting dates, incidents, etc. Mrs. Spurgeon denied that she intended to remarry Loucks after leaving Spurgeon the first time. She said she went to the postmistress in Hillisburg and left instructions not to give her husband...(apparently continued, but missing on this copy)

General Notes for Child Koonrad Peter Snook Sr.
[18401.ged]
It is said that he immigrated from Germany with his mother & father and 2 other siblings, all teenagers. The family had converted all their property into gold, which was carried in a churn. They all died and were burried at sea, except two sons. When they landed in New York, the boys went ashore, but left their goods aboard ship. During the night there was a strom that wrecked the ship and they lost all. So the boys started life in america, penniless. (from Aervey Edgar Snook 1925)
Served in the Revoltionary War under General Anthony Wayne and General Van Rensulaer.
His estate was taken over by Peter and John Snook.
There appears to be a conflict on birthdate and place - DAR, as if they have two different Peters, trying to be placed as only one.
NOTE!:
Peter and Casper Snook were sons of Peter Snook (1758-1837) a Revolutionary War Soldier. Miss Mary B. Snook, DAR Nat.#73302, gave the name of the Revolutionary soldier's wife as Keturah Laish; see Vol. 3 p.A-12, Jefferson County Records. However, in Snook Family Records as given to Miss Iva Scheffel by a Snook descendant, the name of the Revolutionary soldier's wife is given as Maria Goss, and the name of that Revolutionary soldier is shown as Koonrad Peter Snook.
Children of Koonrad Peter Snook and Maria Goss are: 1. Koonrad 2. Peter Snook (1777-1851) m. Mary Aber (1779-1858) 3. Casper Snook (1781-1851) m. Esther Gillian (1783-1846)
Other children of Koonrad Peter Snook which may have been the children of another wife, probably Keturah Laish, were: John Snook William Snook Kathern Snook m. Antone Schrather Mary Snook m. Philip Laish Keziah (there may have been others.) (Also some thing that maybe child 1 and 2 may have been one child, Peter Koonrad??
There has been alot of dicusions, views, conflicts and confusion over this issue, maybe out there is some one closet, unknowingly they have something that might resolve this issue.[18401.ged]
