Civil War Pension File #396973; National Archives, Washington, D.C. 4. WORLD FAMILY TREE, Vol. 5, Tree #2055, Broderbund, submitted by Nancy NORDQUIST, 1550 NW 195th St., Apt. 110, Shoreline, WA 98117-2857.

BIO: On the 1860 census, Mary is listed as Mary C. Her age is given as "6". Other documents show her as Mary E. Mary E. BATCHELOR is the first of the six children who applied for pension benefits from their father's service in the Civil War. She gave her date of birth as Jan. 17, 1854. The original application was filed with the pension office in May, 1884. The claim was apparently abandoned before 1906. Nancy NORDQUIST, in the data submitted for the WFT disk, reports Mary's date of birth as 11 November 1853. Since the 1854 date was supposedly reported by Mary herself, in filing for her share of her father's pension, compiler has chosen to record that as the correct birthdate. Furthermore, the WFT CD gives Mary's husband as "William L. SMITH" rather than Frank BATCHELOR. No documentation or reference is cited for this marriage. On the other hand, compiler found Mary's last name given as "BATCHELOR" on the CW Pension file data, as well as a record of this marriage on the Fulton County, IN Marriage Index. SMITH may have been a later marriage for Mary E. MOW.

General Notes (Husband)

Owner of Rivenhall Estate - Only child named in mother's Will. Succeeded cousin James at Rivenhall 1730. M.P. for Sudbury 17-15-22. Died 1 April 1733. Will dated 18 July 1730, proved 10 April 1733. Buried Rivenhall. Referred in Will of grandfather.

Thomas 3rd and was reckoned a "gentleman of very good parts" He wrote several numbers of the Spectator and was a pal of King George 1st who condescended to smoke his pipe with his English subjects of merit, He offered him "an Irish peerage which he thought proper to refuse" * He was a friend of Addison>>> Thomas is "Mon tres chor ami" of the Rev. Wm Cole of Cambridge who in his "antiquities & Gossip" is a bit like a sentimental school girl.

Thomas appears not to have graduated after his time at Cambridge. He was a friend of William Whiston, the astronomer...(contrib., donation)? - "Discovery of Longitude by means of the Noodle" "Mary(nee Shirley) was Western's Brain" - Colo, a compliment.. but he was sarcastic about her brief inconsolable state and speedy re-marriage,---COLE.." who was a woman of great reading, and no less writing and observation. For her sake, I shall less regard woman's tears after her widowhood. How often have I heard her say that she valued the name of "Western" more than the greatest title any noble could bestow?. Yet not many months after my seeing her and her son on his marriage, -with which she was dis-satisfied, SHE RE-MARRIED to Mr Bridges, of or near Cobham in Surrey. This was about the year 1735."

General Notes (Wife)

1 NAME Anne /Dolliffe/

Did she marry again after William's death? See note for William. "Will dated 9 Aug 1724 proved by Widow, 3 Sep.1729 Doner? Rivenhall." Dolliffe

General Notes for Child James Western

Rivenhall fell into his fathers 1st cousin Thomas worth £30000

Only son, died a Minor19/3/1730. Admin granted to mother May 1730 and Debeni's to sister Wilhelmina Anne Stephens 30/6/1778

James had the distinction of being buried in two different places. Resting-place no1 is with his father William on the family vault, whilst resting-place no 2 is with his mother Anne Dolliffe, formerly Western Nee Bateman; under the church tower. It is believed that Mrs Doliffe left a verbal request that her son's coffin should be transferred to her own tomb. This tomb was under the Tower since being linked in her mind with the year 1717 (date of building), with her father's elevation to being Lord Mayor of London, 1717... it would be most natural. Furthermore, she had been the generous donor of the church plate... & left £200 to s.p.g.; £20 to the poor of Rivenhall. It seems highly likely that her money paid for the 1717 Tower. Having examined her (very long) will, we find nothing in writing to bring further light to the problem. The alternative requires the hypothesis of her heavy iron tomb-cover having been misleadingly removed from some place in the chancel {the space around the Alter in a church} to its present position in 1878/79. There is nothing in the specification to suggest so.
