Condemned by contemporaries and criticised by later hi s t o r ians as beingweak and grasping, J ames III neverthe le s s c om bined a full measure of theRoyal Stewart energ y a n d inte lli gence wi th a love of the arts, and hiscoi nag e w as th e firs t in Scotland or England to bear a tru e l i ken ess of the mon arch. His preference for the compa ny o f scho lars, a rchitect s andartists inf uriated his n obles , and h is own b rothers , Alexander, Duke ofAlbany a nd Joh n, Ear l of Mar re g arde d him with jealousy vergin g onhat red. I n 1479, James ' broth ers were arrested on s uspici o n ofcon spiring agains t the Cr own. The Earl of M ar die d in suspic iouscircumstanc es, whils t t he Duke o f Alban y escaped t o England.
James' estrangement from his brothers and a strong fa c t i o n within theScottish nobility le d to the final lo s s o f B er wick and a coup at Lauder,Berwickshire in Jul y 1 482 , whe n t he kin g was removed to EdinburghCastle , som e min or mem ber s of his household were hanged (incl udi n g hisfa vourit e Rob ert Cochrane) and the more impor tan t ones bani shed. A lthoug hJames tried t o settle hi s diff erences wit h the Duk e of Al bany, hisbrother agai n trie d to win the k ingdo m (E dward I V had recognised h im asAl exander IV in 1 482). The D uke of A lbany was exil ed to F r ance.
After his queen's death in 1486, James lived in incre a s i n g isolation inStirling Castle amid st growing rumo u r s o f hi s cupidity (he conferred anearldom on his favo ur it e, J ohn R amsay) an d his undesirable friendshipwit h En gla nd. F inally , the Scottish nobles seized his elde st s o n a nddefe ated Ja mes at the Battle of Sauchieburn , thre e mile s south -west of Stirling, on 1 1 June 1488 . He wa s throw n from hi s horse a s he fled fromthe field . Carrie d int o a nearby c o ttage, h e called for a pries t,whereup on a m ysterious fig ure force d his way in, excl aimed , ' I willsh rive thee!' an d stabbe d him to death .
