They sold their Louisa Co. Iowa land in 1853 and 1858 and removed to Oregon by covered wagon, walking much of the way.
J S Kenemetz and Saul E (also E Saul and E S) Spurgeon introduced the first silk-worms into Coos Co., Oregon. They planted mulberry trees & made a success of both. As soon as the trees are large enough to furnish suffucient feed for the worms, he intends to enter the silk culture on a large scale.

It was told that "Uncle Dow" was a friend of Union Officials during the Civil War, and he asked them not to harm his bro. Jere in Clark Co., Missouri. Union soldiers would rest, feed & water their horses at Jeremiah's and they never even took his gun!

Crippled in both legs after a serious illness called Brain Fever in those days, probably what we call Polio. He was a large man, tremendiously strong in the arms and shoulders. He helped with the farm work, planting cultivating with riding implements pulled by a team of horses or mules. He rode a big black horse to look after the cattle. He attended the Gem City Business College and taught school; discipline was no problem. ...
