In succeeding years, the Sinclairs strengthened their p o s i t ion in Scotland. They took part in the Battle of Ro ss l y n 13 04 (when three English armies of 10,000 men eac h w e r e defea ted in a single day) and at the Battle of B anno ck bu rn in 13 14. King Robert the Bruce presented a s wor d t o ano ther Si r William Sinclair (of the Hermandsto n Br anch ). H e made ano ther William Sinclair (of the Ros sly n Branc h) Bi shop of Dun keld and took his brother, He nr y Sinclair , int o his own ser vice.
Heart of Bruce
It was to this Henry Sinclair that he entrusted th e d u t y o f taking his heart to the Holy Land on his deat h. H ow ev er , by the time of Bruce's death in 1329, Henr y wa s to o ol d s o he passed on the task to his two sons , Will iam a nd Jo hn a nd to Sir James Douglas, Sir Rober t Loga n and Si r Will iam K eith. On their way to the Hol y Land , they wer e persua ded t o help the Spanish in thei r battl e against t he Moor s and, f or their pains, were k illed a t the Battl e of Teb a in 1330 . However, the Moor s though t so much o f the coura ge of th e Scottish knight s that th ey gave perm ission for t heir bodi es to be retu rned to Sc otland. Sir W illiam Keith , who had s urvived t he battle , had the histor ic role of re turning th e hear t of Bruc e back to Scotland.

The first known settler of the name of Sinclair, or S t . C l a ir, on the shores of North America was Salamon, w h o ca m e o n the John and Sara, from London in 1651. Joh n S inkle r , a s he called himself, who was, born in Scotl an d abou t th e ye ar 1630, was in Exeter, N. H. by the ye a r 1658; a nd i s th e second known settler of the name i n A merica.
John SINCLAIR born 1630 Edinburgh Scotland, farmer, b o u g h t land in Exeter NH 1/6/1659; will written 1/27/160 0- 17 0 0 p robated 9/14/1700; arrived 1651 as an indenture d s erv an t; w orked off indenture as a lumberjack and set tle d i n Exe ter.
He married twice. His first wife was named Mary. His s e c o n d was named Deborah. From all accounts, Deborah w a s a w om a n ahead of her time, for she formed a busines s c ontrac t w it h her husband before marriage. John respe cte d this c ontr act , as the first clause in his will tes tifi es. It re ads:
I will that my debts of charges shall be paide and disc h a r g ed and all my contract with my wife before marria g e b e pe rf ormed by my Executors.''
John had James, Mary Sarah, another daughter, and Joh n . T h e se sons, James and John, are the American ancesto r s o f mo s t of the Sinclairs in America who once live d i n Norm andy.
