General Notes (Husband)
Because of the death of the sons of Sir Henry Sincl a i r i n S pain, the Barony of Rosslyn passed directly t o h i s gran dso n who was yet another William Sinclair. I t wa s t his Wil lia m Sinclair who married the daughter o f Mali se I I, the ' jarl ' of Orkney, which resulted in th e 'jarl dom ' of Orkne y even tually coming to the Sinclair s of Ros slyn . This occu rred i n 1379 when King Haakon V I of Norwa y gra nted the Orc adian E arldom to William's s on, Henry S inclai r. This was r eally th e peak of Sinclai r power. The y owne d large Estate s througho ut Scotland p lus 200 strat egicall y placed island s in the No rth Atlan tic - the step ping sto nes to the New W orld. Princ e Henr y, as he becam e known, w as also the premi er 'jarl' o f N orway by virtu e of his des cent from the Hous e of Moer e . He was certain ly one of th e most powerful me n in 14t h Cen tury Europe , controlling t he northern acces s to th e Atlanti c Ocea n and with a larg e fleet when ship s repr esented power.
General Notes for Child Earl Henry St. Clair Of Orkney
There is compelling evidence to confirm that in 1398, P r i n c e Henry travelled in the wake of his Viking forebe a r s t o th e New World. Almost 100 years before Columbu s i s r epor ted t o have discovered America, Prince Henr y ha d sail ed wi th a n armada of 12 ships, fully crewed a nd wi th 20 0 hundre d men -at-arms on board for better pro tectio n of t he fleet . Ther e is evidence from early map s and fr om read ing the t Zeno u n arrative, that Princ e Henry wa s accompani ed by fell ow Knigh ts Templar, an d by Cisterci an (farming ) monks.
After an unsuccessful attempt to land in Markland (Newf o u n d land) they decided to sail on to Estotiland (Nova S co ti a ) . Five ships were lost, and another two so badl y dam ag e d th at they had to be abandoned but not befor e they h a d be en st ripped of all valuable materials-incl uding can no n.
As a Venetian cannon of the 14th Century was dredge d u p f r o m the harbour of Louisburgh on Cape Breton Isla nd , i t i s li kely that this was the place where Henry fi rs t lan de d in th e New World. The Zeno map, which was th e m ost ac cur ate of i ts day, would tend to confirm thi s conc lusion.
The tJarldom u of Orkney remained in Sinclair hands un t i l t h e Northern Isles were handed over to James III o f S co tlan d , as part of the dowry, of Princess Margare t of D enm ar k i n 1471. Thereafter, the Sinclair influenc e shift ed s out h t o Caithness where Prince Henry us gran dson, Wi lliam , ha d alr eady been made Earl in 1454.
Again from In Search of The Holy Grail:
The Sinclair family achieved significant prominen c e i n t h e years after Robert the Bruce secured independ en ce f or S co tland. They had signed the Declaration o f Arb oat h in 13 2 0 (akin to being a signer of the Americ an Del arat ion of I nd ependence), an unusual document ina smuch a s i t claimed a n A sian ancestry for the Scots an d call Ro ber t the Bruc e a sec ond Maccabeus, who was a n early Jewi sh F redom fight er.
The Sinclairs became renowned as champions of the Kni g h t s T emplar in Scotland. The pope attempted to acqui r e a l l Temp lar lands in Scotland to grant to the Hospit al ers , b ut th e Sinclairs denied that Templars owned lan d i n Sc otla nd, al though they did own more than 500 indi vidu al pr opert ies. A s each property was discovered, th e Sin clair s took s steps t o defend them. And it was th e Sincl airs w ho hel d and prote cted the Templar order' s treasure s.
Thirty years after the last Viking expedition to Amer i c a , H enry Sinclair and the Venetian Antonio Zeno mad e th e i r firs t voyage to the New World. Between 1398 an d 14 0 0 He nry Sin clair made perhaps two trips to Americ a an d la id pl ans fo r a colony. He controlled the large st fl eet i n th e world a nd was guardian of the largest t reasur e in t he wo rld.
When Sinclair returned to Scotland, he found the clan s w a r r ing among themselves and the English, seizing thi s ad va nt ag e, attacked both Edinburgh and Kirkwall, th e latte r b ei n g a chief Sinclair property in the Orkneys . Henr y Sin cla i r rushed to defend this stronghold, whi ch wa s a castl e wi t h a walled harbor, and there lost hi s life.
Additional Information:
Henry Sinclair was born about 1345 into a family wit h g r e a t power and prestige in Scotland, France and Norw ay . T h e Si nclairs were Normans who came with William th e C onqu er or t o England and had parlayed their relations hip s int o a n Earl dom at Rosslyn. Henry received a goo d educ atio n and , upon h is father's death in 1358, was p roclaim ed th e Lor d of Rossl yn.
Henry's first marriage was to the granddaughter of t h e K i n g of Norway and Sweden. But she died young and ap pa rent l y w ithout issue. He later remarried and had by t h e tim e o f hi s death a total of thirteen children. Hi s li fe wa s ful l an d one known for both his court and ti tle s but al so fo r a fa scinating mystery that is still b ein g unravele d to t his day .
In 1369, Henry was named the Earl of Orkney and Lor d o f S h e tland by Hakon VI King of Norway. This was rumo re d to h a v e come by lineage of his mother, but others s ai d it w a s a r eward from his first marriage. Either way , h e was n o w a ma n of considerable wealth and power an d car ried th e t itle o f Prince at age 24.
He was a vassal (in the feudal system, a vassal was a p e r s o n granted the use of land in return for rendering h om ag e ) o f both Scotland and Norway and that gave him co nsi der ab le f reedom. The responsibilities of his posts r equi re d shi ps an d he started his own fleet to travel ba ck an d f orth b etwee n Norway, The Orkneys and Rosslyn. E ventua ll y this fl eet nu mbered at least 13 ships, large r than t h e official f leet o f Norway itself and he was n amed Admi ra l of the Hig h Seas f or Scotland. Henry recei ved othe r tit les during hi s life, i ncluding Duke of Old enburg i n Denma rk, and Lord C hief Justi ce of Scotland . But the r eal cont roversy surroun ding his li fe comes f rom the clai m by hi s descendants tha t he discover ed Ame rica in 139 8 - nearl y one hundred year s before Columb u s made the tr ip!
That he had the resources for such a voyage is withou t q u e s tion. He had the fleet, the money and men to unde rta k e su c h an expedition. Iceland and Greenland were al rea d y know n t o the world and were visited on occasion b y fi sh erman a nd t raders. But the document that proclaim s thi s v oyage i s call ed the Zeno Narrative and was writ ten b y Nic olo Zeno 's desc endents 200 years after the vo yage s uppose dly too k place, w hich leaves much open to s peculat ion.
In the Narrative, Nicolo Zeno brought back from Gree n l a n d a tale of fisherman having been blown by storm t o t h e N e w World. This story highly interested Prince He nr y Si ncla i r as he had heard similar stories from his s ubj ects . Wit h t he Zenos as guides they allegedly left S cotl and i n th e spri ng of 1398 in 12 ships and are sai d to ha ve arr ive d in th e Nova Scotia area in May of th e same ye ar, som ewhe re in th e vicinity of Oak Island.
Many of the expedition returned shortly after arriv i n g b u t some, including Sinclair, are said to have stay e d e xplo ri ng the land and making stops in Massachusett s a nd R hod e Isl and where evidence suggests they built t he N ewpor t To wer. A nother piece of evidence to suppor t the s tory i s fou nd in W estford, Massachusetts. Ther e is foun d a carv ing i n rock o f a Knight Templar carryi ng a shiel d of th e Gunn C lan. Th e Gunns were cousins o f the Sincla irs in t his tim e and acco rding to the Narra tive, Sir Jam es Gunn d ied ther e.
After spending a year in this new land. Sinclair ma d e t h e t rip home in 1399 and was soon killed. Whether s om eon e j ealo us of his knowledge did this is not clear . Bu t the re w as a n English expedition to conquer the Or kney s sen t by Ki ng He nry IV in August 1400, which may b e res ponsib le for h is dea th. Some also believe that thi s voya ge ha d purpose s other t han just exploration, tha t Sincla ir ma y have tran sported se veral of the Templar s and som e of th eir treasur e to Nova Sc otia where it wa s buried o n Oak Is land for saf ekeeping. Th e favored the ory is tha t one of t he items take n to Nova Sco tia was n o less tha n the Holy G rail itself.
